Title: whats your favourite smoothie recipe??
Post by: Stine on Friday 27 October, 2006
I have tried and failed.. and failed.. and failed.. :P I could really use some advice  -_-

Title: Re: whats your favourite smoothie recipe??

first of all don't ask what others like, you'll get some weird answers

see http://www.raw-pleasure.com.au/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,71/topic,1913 (http://www.raw-pleasure.com.au/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,71/topic,1913)

start with your favourite fruit, mine is  banana
add a glass or two of water,
JEN suggested blending fruit first to make it smoother and it works
the other suggestion was tougher things first which seemed logical but there you go
add a bland green leaf eg. lettuce
my favourite is bok choy only because I never used to eat it
and a few dates
i prefer a smoothy consistancy rather than too runny

Never thought of using bok choy in a green smoothie...it grows by the ton in my Mums veggie garden so now I'll know what to do with it - Thanks StaNagle :)

Mmm, had a delicious one this morning. First, fill up the food processor (mine is small) with silverbeet (you can use a more 'bland' green like lettuce or baby spinach) add a little bit of parsley or dill then approx. equal parts water and young coconut water (or all water if you can't get young cocos). Process this until its as smooth as you can get (depends on how good your blender/food processor is. Then add banana, peach and mango and blend/food process until smooth and creamy. The amount of fruit you need depends on how big your blender is and how much water you have.

In raw-food speak, you never fail; just in the middle of creating something great and yummy!

My personal favourite fruit smoothies are definately the Blueberry-based ones(yummy)!

where im at, we have an oversupply of ripe bananas. i find spotty ripe ones give the best smoothy creme flavour.

this morn i had fresh dates, ripe bananas and organic kale. it was so thick i had to pour it into a bowl and spoon it into my gob!!

chunky!

until now I've been wolfing the smoothies down straight away
but today i put a jug in the fridge to cool down

and it seperated into a clear part and a froth on top
the clear juice was delicous
the froth wasn't, I felt bad about throwing it away but did anyway

i think i may only have noticed now as i was reading about a guy who uses a strainer to get rid of blender froth as if it was a bad thing.
Do others even notice it, or do you just shake and mix it up again

Title: Re: whats your favourite smoothie recipe??
Post by: Sheryl on Saturday 28 October, 2006
I just stir in the froth... if you let the froth sit it just melts down into juice anyway (in my experience). Or if you put it in a sealed bottle and shake it all gets mixed in.

ok, good, we don't have a compost because nothing much gets past the chooks and worm farm

but I haven't reached the stage of bringing food scraps home from the office

At the yoga/surfing/raw retreat last weekend I saved up all the food scraps to take home to compost. There was a lot! One of the volunteers saved me from taking them home though by feeding it to the turkeys! I love the wild turkeys here... they are everywhere. I see about 5 a day at our place.

Hi
My favourite smoothy will usually have something redish in it, berries or tamarillo.  I pack as much as I can into the blender without it exploding over the sides.

Huge handful of pumkin seeds and about a cup or 2 of water, whizz till seeds are fine,
add:
half a pineapple
an apple
a pear
couple of kiwifruit
a tamarillo and/or frozen berries

half a banana or tahini (if it will fit)

blend and enjoy all morning long.

I am keen to make green smoothies now (just a matter of getting my head around the thought of lettuce/spinach and sprouts in a smoothie - juice I can imagine, but I have not yet invested in a juicer $$$ )

hope you have had some luck with your smoothie making.

kind regards
for-today

Post by: Stine on Sunday 29 October, 2006
there's no way i'll get a hold of tamarillo where i live, i can't even get pineapple! the most exotic fruit i can get hold of here is mango :P they cost about 2 US dollars for one, and they're totally green and sour. the only fruit that doesn't cost a lot here is bananas. the vegetables is also extremly expencive. i dont know if i can afford being raw! (without starving to death)

hee hee,i think it is my duty to eat all the food grown in your garden Zact01..mmm yum...i think eating raw and organic is worth paying extra, cos if you eat the second rate crud you will end up paying more than Zact01's 2cents worth,lol...in my humble opinion....

I think I need to read some updated material on food combining. All the stuff I read says that you should never ever ever ever eat fruit with anything other than fruit. Ever! However I recently found out that an aquaintance of mine is in fact a raw lady and she happily blends her fruit and greens and wow, she is de-aging. She looks younger every time I see her. Awsome or should I say Rawsome... hehehe.

I make them every morning for my fussy boys...... their favourites are always pinapple, orange (juiced before adding to the blender, make sure you have no seeds, this makes it bitter), this is the base and then add greens, at first i only put in cos lettuce and sunflower sprouts, they have gone from having a small glass to a big glass and going for seconds!

To the pine/orange i sometimes add either apple or mango..... I find more than 2-3 fruits too much and my youngest finds banana to slimmy!..... Only kid on the planet that does not like banana i think.

Now they have them with kale, spinach, sunny sprouts and what ever else i can fit in the blender.

So, my advice is to maybe just try your fav fruit with a mild green...then go from there!

My fav's are one type of fruit(lots of it) and tons of green! - kale, spinach, celery, sprouts etc.

If there not sweet enough add dates or sultanas.....just remembered that's another thing I did at the beginning.

Good luck....keep trying they are one of the best things you can do for you health!

Victoria Boutenko talks about food combining and green smoothies. It's generally accepted that greens should be in their own category and do combine well with fruit! Combine away!

Even the hard core food combiners on the forum find that to be the case! Right Janita?

Cheers,
Sheryl

Mmmm, green smoothies. I'm downing one as we speak. Karen (I'm guessing that was you logged in as Sami by mistake, lol!) I really want to try a pineapple/basil smoothie but haven't yet. I think that would be REALLY good - have you ever tried it?

Hi FreedomB,

I tried your smoothie recipe on the first page of this thread and it's delicious! It's my first green smoothie that has fruit in it (I made one with all green vegies and it's not to be recommended if you aren't used to it!). Not only do I love it but my daughter and hubby do also. MMMM. The only change I made was to add a handful of soaked almonds.

Thanks! xoxo

Hi Freedom,

I LOVED it! We had another today made from fresh orange juice, frozen pineapple, banana and a big heap of baby spinach. The only drawback? My hubby and daughter took most of it! LOL. Just happy to feed my girl healthy stuff.

Thanks again. Your recipe was the perfect starter.

i have gone boonta on the gs today, massively craving bananas just lately...i have whipped up 3 huge gs today in total i have consumed 3 litres of the green goodness-makes me a real green goddess*lol*...and i am so adoring white peach added in and i lick out my glass too Freedom, yum, hurts my tongue to try and get all the last dregs as my glass of choice is a massive 500ml wine glass....could go some blueberries, but can't see any of those little babies around....have had soo much green today,i feel so incredibly good...

had my lovely gs chilling nicely in the fridge this morning,in the huge glass, sitting snuggly(or so i thought) in the door of the fridge,my beautiful boy opens the fridge to put the last of his green juice in fridge for later, and *smash!!!!!!* there is my smoothie sitting all over the tiles ,green for as far as the eyes can see with the glass smashed to smithereens....
Nige was devastated...and kept apologising over and over...and rang me 2 hours later still apologising....all is forgiven, twas an accident..must admit though i had a nervous twitch or 2 when it first happened.

Ohh neety, your lovely glass and delicious gs all lost.  But how wonderful is raw, giving us the strength to see the bigger picture - after all, 'tis only a glass and some gs, so many people suffer so much every day. You are so funny Neet! Reading this has brought back a memory from about a year ago. I had made pizza and had made my hubby and I an extra one each for lunch the next day. He has loads of jalapenos on his which I can't stand, other than that, they're the same. Well he ate my pizza didn't he... and I went ballistic! Ooops. Look back and laugh now.

I wouldn't do that now that I'm a CALM raw smoothie guzzling little fairy would I?

What are anybody's thoughts on how long you eat raw food for before you consider yourself 'raw'?

Here's the smoothie I make every morning (and I don't think it has too many funky ingredients...  ^_^)

1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen fruit (berries, mango, grapes, etc.)
1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice (about 1 orange)
1/2-3/4 cup water (depending on how thick or runny you like it)
2 tsp raw honey or other natural raw sweetener
1 oz raw almonds (about 22)
ice

The almonds not only add some good protein and fat, but they make the smoothie very "creamy" tasting. I made this this morning with raspberries and it had a nice sweet-sour taste.

that's a consistent and yummy smoothie i enjoyed today for Eastern as lunch,
after blending i strained it to separate the pulp you can use in other recipes:

1 quarter of Jackfruit
1 quarter of coconut flesh (+water)
3 dates
some fresh mint
water as desired

Enjoy the feeling!

Nofrontierstour46 that sounds like the most delicious smoothie I have ever seen the recipe for! Oh wow!!! It's going on my list to try. Did you use young or mature coconut flesh?

Yesterday I blended watermelon (with seeds) and mint. Basically one Vitamix jug of watermelon and a who bunch of mint. It was delicious.

Cheers,

i made this Mango blend yesterday and found it worth to write down...

i called it 'Let go Blend' because of the amount of Prunes  -_-

haven't had any such symptons yet but felt a light cleansing reaction and a pleasent sensation in my body when i drunk it:

basic recipe is:

2 big ripe Mango
6-7 soaked prunes + water (even more)
some water

for a yummy alternative add:
4-5 pieces of Jackfruit
fresh mint

pass trough a strainer and let things go  -_-

my parents just came from costa rica and brought me home some cacao beans.

I've been adding them into my smoothies.  Some are good combos with them, some are not so good.  Here is one I made that was very yummy:

greens from my garden
banana
date
apple
orange juice
cacao beans (not too many, only a couple is great)
ice

i've put papaya in this mix and it tasted yummy also.

I've been having this almost every day:

1-2 bananas (depending on their size and my hunger!)
1 orange
a cup of frozen thawed spinach or many many handfuls of baby spinach!

The non-green variety I make is as follows:

1-2 nanas
1 orange
5-10 strawberries

I've been thinking of adding mango to them, since I loved mango in non-raw but vegan smoothies... but whenever the mango I've bought has ripened... I can't help myself, I just cut the mango into cubes and eat it like that... I so love it!

i just blended 30 bananas with water. it filled the blender jug 3 times. thats my first meal of the day.
really ripe bananas and you pulse the blender so the vortex doesnt form and drag air into the blend. this keeps the bitter edge away. the smoothy is sweeter..

try it.

...does it go a nice brown colour when you mix the two colours??

I'm sure it would turn brown. I didn't mix it. It was very nice as I drank it to get the red, tart, sweet strawberry first. It had some texture from being just strawberry and from the tiny seeds. When I got to the green part it was all smooth, super sweet and delicious. The contrast in flavors was fun!

I like both sweet green smoothies and savory green smoothies but I think I like the savory ones better.  I typically drink three quarts of savory green smoothies per day, and here is a basic recipe.

907 grams (2 pounds) frozen mango (thawed to blend easier)
453 grams (1 pound) leafy greens
10 grams flax seed (heaping teaspoon full)
15 grams raw ginger root (couple of coin sized slices)
½ large onion
6 cloves garlic
Juice from ½ lemon

I often also add jalapeño peppers or cilantro to this recipe.  I often use multiple kinds of greens such as romaine, spinach, beet greens, and I buy pre-washed mixed baby greens that include organic baby lettuces (red & green romaine, red & green oak leaf, lollo rosa, tango), organic red & green chard, organic mizuna, organic arugula, organic frisee, organic radicchio, & organic parsley, organic dill, & organic cilantro .

Oooh nectarines sound yummy, I'm jealous! Can't wait for summer fruits again - especially juicy peaches.

Must share this green smoothie I made today, as it tasted completely different to any I'd made before:

4 kiwifruit
Juice of 1 lime
1 frozen banana
Big handful of rocket leaves

All I can say is:   ZING!!!!!!!!!!  :yahh:

This must've been the most energising GS I have ever drank - I think I was giving the morning coffee-drinkers a run for their money with bouncing off the walls.  So, be careful with it, but if you need an energy boost it's yummo!

Also I think I heard that kiwifruit actually have more Vitamin C than citrus fruit do, definitely a bonus in this wintery weather. So does chilli for that matter, but that's a bit spicy for me :)

MMM i just made the two p's in a pod i call it, pineapple and papaya. I thought ill share.

Fill the blender with  as much water as you want. I filled mine 1/2 way. Then i added half a papaya and as much pineapple as i wanted. Blend away and you have easy drinking baby food my daughter loved it.

Pineapple sweetens the papaya a little bit more. But if your a sweet tooth by any means add your sweetstuff but i think these two concoctions alone is sweet. Also if you like eating tonnes of fruit and you can handle it then by all means use the whole papaya and pineapple hehe. Dont need a banana for this recipe its already thick( easily drinkable) but it may add another zing to it. It also doubles up as a facial scrub to keep skin soft and smooth not that most rawdies need it(so scrape out whats left in the blender and put it on your face that way your not wasting it by washing it all away). To me it tastes like a version of mangoe hehe.

I put flax oil in mine dont ask me why and it was delish.

Yummmm! I am in smoothie heaven! I have just made my all time favourite smoothie. What's in it! Good question.

Water of a young coconut. (I have young coconuts here straight from the tree and sent to me.... so much fun getting them open!)
two mangoes

I have a new favorite.  One sip & I was hooked.  Sounds a bit of a combo, but it's good!

sweet baby spinach
pineapple juice & a little water
oranges
bananas
green seedless grapes

It's sweet and syrupy and tasty and summery and... I an spending every sip discerning a different fruit flavour :)  Yum!

Hello :)

I'm new and thought my first post should be about my first green smoothie that I made today. I read this thread first and then blended 2 small bananas and a kiwi frui with water. Then I juiced 4 big spinach leaves and some ginger and added it all together - yum  :ohyeah: It was a gorgeous limey green colour too

Hi Kitteh,

You'll find lots of green smoothie fans here.  The great thing about green smoothies is that they are limited only by your imagination.

I'm hanging out for summer stone fruit, because my fave green smoothie is a blender full of baby spinach, a couple of frozen bananas and ripe juicy peaches.  Scrumptious!

Nice addition with the ginger, by the way - that would add a lovely kick!

Ok, not a green smoothie but I LOVE this.

Raw almond milk, raw agave and bananas. I make it when I need a sweet treat. Although I discovered custard apples today and am tempted to add one of those to a green smoothie. Mmmmm....

;)

This morning I used 2 bananas, spinach, a pear & ginger, was yummo.

Almost added a peach but I saved it to eat this afternoon :)

I wanted to try papaya, so I bought one over the weekend and yesterday I blended some it with some water, kale and frozen narna - it has such a distinct taste, it was really nice.

Snap Waterberry!  Well almost....

I'm not drinking a green cacao smoothie, but I did bring a cacao/coco/berry smoothie to work in my Sigg bottle today.  Half gone, and the other half is for this afternoon.

Berries + cacao are a match made in heaven.  Frozen berries work wonderfully.

Funny, I always wondered if a green smoothie with cacao would be tasty - I'm yet to try it, as I tend to make my fave berry one with young coconut.

I might do a green version of the coco berry one tomorrow.

Yumm, they are great arent they missgiggles!!

I make them when I'm having chocolate cravings.  Over winter I used strawberries and frozen berries.  But the fresh raspberries were just... ohmygosh good :)

Yes the green smoothies with cacao are tasty, but I find better with the bland or sweet greens.  Although I had a very peppery rocket & radish-greens strawberry cacao one once, that reminded me of that chili-chocolate bite.

This morning I put water into the blender and turned it on. Then added greens and grapes and blended until smooth. I put in 3 bananas and a handful of ice cubes and pulsed until there was no more crunching sound.

I pulse bananas in smoothies because it stops them from tasting bitter.

It was refreshing and tasty.

This week I've been wanting oranges. My fave GS for this week has been 4-5 oranges with the seeds lovingly removed, blended with one banana and two handfuls of baby spinach or silver beet. Yummmm!

Bill's favourite at the moment is the caramel shake. Almond milk, 2-3 bananas, 1-2 spoons of mesquite meal, soaked dates. Blend until smooth and guzzle before wife gets it! LOL

MMMmmmmm. I'm having  a great one here! 3 bananas blended with water. Add one handful of gojis, 1 tablespoon of Lucuma, 1 heaped tablespoon of mesquite and blend. Add Some frozen narnas and more water if needed and blend again. Kwor!

Jen - here's one that the kids might love.  I've just had it for dinner, and it was scrumptious!

1 x handful of almonds (soaked and dehydrated)
1 x mug of water

Whizz whizz, and squeeeeeeeeeeeeeezed through a nutmilk bag.

Nutmilk back into the blender.

Add a "lump" of frozen young coconut flesh, allowing to partially defrost in the nutmilk.

Then add:

2 x heaped teaspoons of cacao powder
2 x teaspoons yacon powder
2 x teaspoons mesquite

Whizz whizz.

Surprisingly filling and unbelievably good.  It was a thick milk consistency, not exactly smoothie thick.  As far as a chocolate milkshake goes it was awesome.

Note:  the above quantities made a large glass full

Thanks Miss G. I think I will keep that one to myself.... the kids are struggling through a GS at the moment. It's like I've fed them green paint!!! Anyone would think that I was trying to kill them with the looks on their faces. Caitlyn looks like  :detox: with hair!

Yacon powder is the best.... so scrummy-licious.

My current fav (changes daily!) is 2 bananas, big handful of baby spinach, 1/3 mango and a handful of sunflower sprouts. The sprouts give it an almost nutty flavour. For more sweetness add more mango. I'm in a savoury mood so this one's perfect! I wonder what I'll feel like tomorrow?

OMG! I just made the best smoothie I've ever had :ohyeah: I'm still doing the GS thing but I noticed since I started running again that I'm craving fats... so I thought I'd try some today in a smoothie and see how it goes...I'm also hanging out for chocolate for some reason so wanted to have some of that too. This is what I came up with. I made it about half an hour ago and it's only 1/3 gone - it's pretty filling

flesh and juice from one green coco
dash of agave
heaped tspn of raw cacao powder
1/2 tspn cinnamon
1 cup water
2/3 tblspn raw coconut oil
2 bananas

I blended the first 5 ing. together first to get them all smooth and then added the coco oil and bananas in at the end. This is SO good!

oooh what a great thread, only just found it!

this probably isn't much use until mulberry season rolls round again, but one of my top faves is:

Handful frozen mulberries (picked 3kg for free from a local tree last year, a very happy find!)
2 - 3 Bananas (can use frozen for extra thick, creamy smoothie)
1 - 2 Oranges
Bunch baby spinach
And a spoon of Spirulina is nice in it too

I had a really yummy one two weeks ago, got it off a Jennifer Cornbleet DVD:

Filtered water
Organic blueberries – used a whole tub
One organic orange
One organic frozen banana
Handful organic spinach

Really nice but given the tub of blueberries was about $8.00, makes for quite an expensive drink.

Mission: To scour the recipe sections of my favourite raw sites

Objective: To recieve inspiration and practical advice to further my path towards raw goodness

Conclusion: Success!

What a great thread - my weekend will be filled with fantastic recipes now, cant wait. :-)

Here is a green smoothie i do when i dont actually have any fruit left in the house:

zest and juice from a couple of limes
greens
water

Is a great way to get your greens without it tasting like just green - yummy!

NB - i love the tip on only pulsing with the bananas, will use it for sure.  :yahh:

okay..not a green smoothie but one which I've been living on for the last month (until I couldn't find any more coconuts)...
1 banana
1/2 punnet of blueberries
water from one young coconut
maca powder

whizz together. this is divine. I didn't have room for my blender on this trip so i have been preparing my smoothies the old mortar and pestle way (often improvising with a mixing bowl and a potato masher..takes a while but it's worth it) and putting A LOT of love (elbow grease) into it at the same time. Yes, I'm a determined and often desparate woman. Ariel (my 'breatharian' son -ie: doesn't think eating is important) thinks this is the best banana smoothie he has ever had.

bananas and water (banana mylk)

bananas and celery

bananas and baby spinach

bananas date and silver beet

bananas and lettuce(soft leaf lettuce)

bananas and green veg juice...mmmmm

bananas and ripe fresh figs(or soaked dried figs) with lettuce

add water to all smoothie recipes as much as you want to get desired consistency!

i have many many over ripe bananas,i am very excited i love smoothi~ing...its so easy to digest..yummo

the less ingredients added to a 'meal' the less digestive energy used

i've been talking to an old powerlifter friend who thinks raw food is for looneys, anyway i sent him my recipe for my workout shake, but said he'd never heard of half the ingredients so wouldn't try it even if i was whipping his arse, but on some of the other info i sent him on juice's he bought a juicer and sms'd me tonight that he'd tried his juicer out and felt like he was on speed, several sms's and emails later after he'd calmed down i warned him not to try my shake as i thought he might fall over and die from the over stimulation, maybe a few months on carrot celery and cucumber before he induges.. to which he informed me he was going to add strawberrys tomorrow.. i said you should be alright there.. amazing what a bit of live food can do..ya know he hadn't eaten anything uncooked for years not even a salad or raw tomatoe or even a nana....

i had a plain banana and strawberry smoothie today, jeze it was nice............

Mine goes in a blender jug, rather than a juicer, so nothing is wasted.  I then add ice to it once it has blended, to make it super cold.  It comes out thick and creamy.

Last night I had 1 orange, 1 cup watermelon, 2 cups pineapple and pulp of 1 large passionfruit and 1 banana.  It was so delicious.  The passionfruit really set it off.   Yummo!!!
