OK..this is definitely more 'chat' than Raw but...I asked the question on another forum and discovered The Cat Empire (fantabulous!) and Lior...(niiice)

Have been a bit "out of touch" with the music scene since Little Ones came along (eldest is now 5!) so it's nice to revamp the CD collection ( or the mp3 collection!)

So I thought I'd ask the RP folk...any recommendations?

I must add my all time favourite album is still Kate Bush "The Kick Inside"...does that make me an old hippy??  lol!

Music is always a welcome topic for me. It is one of my favourite things...but I am not a 'band-goer' just someone who has a history of music appreciation  - piano/keyboards and some composition. I really felt like some music this arvo after being in the Bris CBD/park playgrounds all morning so my 3 year old boy, Saasha, agreed that some 'boom boom' music would be the go. So,we are listening to a Chicane CD right now and drinking a pint of carrot juice. They go very well together. Mainly I like trance because the harmonies and repetition kind of 'meditate me' but I love a lot of classical also. I don't know anyone else who listens to classical but I am sure they do exist. And balmy Brissy weekends would not be complete without chill-out style CDs to relax to. Incidentally, Steve Arlin states in his book about body building on a raw food diet (RAW POWER), that he prefers heavy metal. I never would have thought the two would go together and was suprised to read that - There, I made my reply about raw foods after all.

Almost anything goes, depending on the mood.  Anything (from one has two children aged 2 and 5) from Totally Gourdgeous to Pearl Jam, Youssou N'dour to Jebediah, Shooglenifty to Foo Fighters and plenty in between, including Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Stones, Dylan, Led Zepp, and lots else.  Used to be really into Aus stuff (and still am) but don't get out so much to check out live stuff except some local shows and the Cygnet Folk Festival, which is only days away.  Always open to new experiences....

Mostly chill out these days...

Groove Armada, Tim/Neil Finn, Sarah Blasko, Air, Incubus, Missy HIggins, Tosca, Zero7, and a bit of old Drum&bass (Roni Size etc) thrown in occasionally when on the rebounder!

haven't been listening to music really whilst away from home. but normally i've been into hardcore/punk/metal music. i also love latin music (background, ie, parents are south american) and especially bolivian music with panpipes and such, makes my heart just melt!!! ahhhhh!! i also love anything that's beautiful, whether it's the lyrics or music or just the way it makes me feel.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Aussie avante garde jazz (I know... yaaawwwwn!!!)...

Was that song you posted an example of avante guarde Australian Jazz?  If so....gosh!

I think Jazz, I think Birdland (the club and the store).  I wouldn't even pick that song as Jazz.  It reminded me of Killing Heidi for some reason - the vocal perhaps was reminiscent of Ella Hooper.  That shows you what I know!  ^_^

Someone who's heard of Birdland - wow... I'm impressed. Actually I say "avante garde" but what I really mean is "post modern"... I just don't like to sound all pedantic and hoity toity. Ooops, I've blown my cover.

That recording is my daughter's 3 piece all girl band, when she was 17.. I don't know why I posted it.

I haven't listened to anything for ages. Even my mp3 player has flat batteries, its so sad. I am having problems with my ears and as I love loud music I thought I would give my ears a rest.

Hey I love classical music too and everything else in between. I love the current European composers as well as loving Bach melodies.

Herr Bach was the ultimate throw away composer in his day. He would write a new Sunday service and then just toss it aside and write a new one for the next week. I also love some of Mozart's operas too.

Hey Pea I sang in a Community Choir in Hobart and we sang with a South American group that used to sing at Salamanca Markets each week. I loved singing with that group as we sang the national music of so many nations. Originally the choir was as offshoot of an African Music workshop held in Hobart, when it finished the group Sisongke emerged to continue singing the same sort of music.

Miss Giggles I searched all over the place trying to find EBTG and the track you said was sublime without any success.

Wow!  Following in her dad's musical footsteps, huh?  Now my association with Ella Hooper at least makes more sense.  Well, to me, at least.  ^_^   I have to say though, I wouldn't like to think that she went through what is alluded to in the song.  Still, so much artistic expression is borne of angst and adversity.  Some of it, the best.


Oh no, Joss - I can't even remember now what track I was thinking of.  'Sublime' and 'EBTG' go hand in hand for me.  Refresh my memory, and I'll track it down for you.

Oh, and I'm currently listening to Astral Weeks by Van Morrison.  No one will ever convince me that this cd is not on high rotation in Heaven. ;)

Well I can see that I seriously need to expand my musical listening.  I hardly ever have music on, preferring the peace and quiet.  But sometimes, I'll play Van Morrison, Secret Garden or Norah Jones.  I like Train also.  Used to love AC/DC and anything loud, but hey I've aged and mellowed just a little.  Might get out my Chieftains CD's and have a listen to them now.  Miss Giggles, I did like listening to Paolo Nutini, found the clip overwhelmed the music though.  Might check out a few more of his songs.....  19 hey, I vaguely remember that age....

Well I liked both Snow Patrol and Paolo Nutini, so I think we should have a regular update from Miss Giggles on what music she is currently listening to, so that we don't have to look for great music ourselves.

For me, nothing does it like Ludwig Van! I love all classical, especially Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin.

Um I don't own a radio and only listen in the car. I will buy a digital copy online as I hate having to store all those discs. As it is I rip all my dvd's out of their hard case and pop them all in a file, probably an A5. Alysia gets me new sleeves everytime she goes to Johur Bahru. I manage to save a lot of space as 50 dvd's fit into one file.

I will third (is that the correct terminology) the motion for Miss Giggles to provide us with her music selection on a regular basis.  Loved both Paolo and Snow Patrol.  I spent a good couple of hours finding music on youtube whilst chatting to hubby on skype.  Got a notice that I was up to 100% on my downloads, then (whoops) got a 125% notice.  Me thinks I might have to upgrade to unlimited  :rolleyes:

still winding down from the woodford folk festival, i'm just going mad on all things percussion. i think i've thrown every single vertebra out of alignment from insane dancing. capoeira is on the "to do" list this year.

so, my playlist currently consists of LABJACD, that 1 guy, xavier rudd, batucada sound machine, ganga giri, OKA, the bird, ash grunwald, afro dizzy act, mr franti of course, lyrics born, salmonella dub, the bee gees, damian marley, massive attack, tool, simon & garfunkel, kaya and infected mushroom.

there's too many tunez and not enough time!

Right now, my 14 year old son is playing Taproot, Slipnot, and Adema (all ultra heavy metal bands that make Metallica sound like Pat Boone), while my 12 year old daughter is simultaneously playing Paris Hilton, Beyonce, and Rhiannon! All full bore, of course. You have to experience it to really appreciate the full depth of the agony that it induces in ones soul. Its war, and each one othem has their own special battle strategy. She uses repitition, playing the same thing over and over and over, until it's stuck in your head, even while you sleep. He uses variety and heavy bass, so that you can never quite make it out, but you can feel it pounding in your chest, and you just know it contains subliminal messages telegraphed direct from the devil, himself.

Brett, that made me chuckle.  I have two daughters, nearly 10, and we have watched the Princess Diaries a few times over the last couple of weeks, and I'm still singing "Catch a falling star".  I even had to look up the lyrics to make sure I was getting it right.  Maybe I need to expand their musical world too.

Brett and Jacqueline there is no peace in music with teenagers in the house. Just loud thumping music night and day. However, the kids are just moving to the beat and working out their own musical preferences.

Just had to drag this now-old topic out - I don't listen to music much at all but this morning I have to do some housework and I'm going to whip up some flax crackers and I thought it would be nice to have something playing while I did. I headed to the CD shelf and looked at my tiny collection next to mum and dad's thousands... the music I've had in the last few years is all really down and sad, or angry (kelly clarkson, greenday) but I'm so not in that head space today so instead I went for... Aqua's aquarium, their first album from, oh, 1998 I think. I blasted it on the CD player and what's not to love? The first song is called 'happy boys and happy girls.' Pure, sweet, boppy, pop music - perfect when I was 11 and perfect now.

Just had to share!  ^_^
