Title: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: jaminunit on Monday 02 June, 2008 Ive been reading as much info as i can find on the net about msm but i would really like to hear it from the horses mouth so to speak
Id love to hear your feedback on how you have found it, and if it has helped in anyway. I dont have any troubles with my joints or pain, so i would be taking it just for the skin and nails and because i have a large fresh scar that i would love to heal well. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: jaminunit on Monday 02 June, 2008 Somebody? anybody? o:)

Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: Phill on Monday 02 June, 2008 Methylsulfonylmethane.
Ill let you know in a few months.. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: Jenergy on Monday 02 June, 2008 Love it!!! I took it for ages as someone I knew thought the deep cracks in my feet and the fact that I can't smell durian very much might be down to a sulfur deficiency. I took it and the cracks healed. Awesome!

I stop taking it yesterday because I ended up with chronic migraine and have been up at ungodly hours for the last three nights, each time with bleeding nose. My husband and son took some too, though not as much as I did, my son got a bleeding nose and they both had nightmares. I'm thinking maybe this product may not be suitable for those who has been high raw for over two years, I don't know... need to do more research on this product.
Often when I eat the wrong food, I have unsettling dreams and I use this as my guidance system. MSM gave me a horrific nightmare, R18 Blood Gore type, now I know where Steven King gets his ideas. What do you think is happening? Was I detoxing, or should I listen to what my dreams are telling me? Love and peace Nic This would be the first question I've posted on the board. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: melb on Thursday 19 June, 2008 sunheart, were you taking MSM alone? Or one of the combination products (eg for joints)? Was it powder or capsules or something else?
Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: sunheart on Thursday 19 June, 2008 Nature First Law MSM crystalline powder. I added them in orange juice or water. It was the first time I took supplement since 2004-2005. Any idea what’s happening to me?
Love and peace Nic Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: Supriya on Thursday 19 June, 2008 So, what's msm? Is it when you sms yourself some sulphur? Me-sulphur-myself, msm?
Sulphur can be found in cabbage, onion, radish, cucumber watercress, grapes and berries. Gosia Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: melb on Thursday 19 June, 2008 sunheart, I was just checking it wasn't one of the combos with glucosamine, which is often problematic (and it's not exactly vegetarian let alone raw, so you were probably avoiding anything with that in it anyway)
MSM supposedly does speed up detox, it makes the cell walls more permeable and stuff that couldn't get out before might be able to get out. Maybe it is just detox? Have you had nose bleeds as a detox symptom before? (I get them when exposed to something nasty, which I suppose is an instantaneous detox from the something nasty) It's hard to tell if you're reacting to the MSM or the results of the MSM. I'd normally say listen to your own body, don't use it, but in your other post you said you're drawn to it. If you want to continue with it, maybe you could try a much smaller dose (a quarter dose or less, and not in the evening) and see how you react? Maybe with a high raw background you need to gradually build up your dose? I think I've asked more questions than answered, sorry :) Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: niqi on Thursday 19 June, 2008 I took MSM in conjunction with chondroitin for hard core arthritis years ago - my cartilege was wearing off my joints and everyone (naturopath AND conventional doctor) told me to give it a go.
Didn't do a thing. Neither did the shark's cartilege, which I only took for one bottle because I felt so guilty about ingesting such a creature. I would hope that there's other ways to deal with what you've got - it didn't work for me, but I can't speak for you! best cheers, Niqi Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: Jenergy on Friday 20 June, 2008 Wow that's full on. I've taken MSM when I was told that the deep cracks I had on my heels might be due to a sulphur deficiency. Not being able to smell durian fuelled this suspicion even further. I took loads of msm daily and the crack's healed and now... durian has smell! However one day I looked at it and just didn't want it anymore. So I've not taken it since.
I'll see what I can find out for you... xoxoxoxo Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: sunheart on Friday 20 June, 2008 melb, thanks for asking questions and sharing your nosebleed experience.
I bought MSM to nudge the toxins in my head area. After a 2-week water fast (several months ago), I felt that I could fast another week or two… but having read warnings about fasting without supervision, I decided not to go ahead, realising later that I should’ve listened to my intuition. From the neck down, I felt pinky clean but my head felt congested, no pain or anything, but blockages of some sort, probably moulds from antibiotics. I had meningitis when I was 6 months old (40 years ago), and was pumped with antibiotics ‘to keep me alive,’ which lead to long-term damage to my ears and eyesight, and later migraine, sinus, asthma, allergies, and many little health problems, which I no longer have (except for the migraine since taking MSM). Here’s the interesting bit, the gore part of the nightmare was related to the head area (not mine), so maybe it’s another message altogether. For the past few months, I have not been making much progress, that’s why I was drawn to MSM. Maybe a trial of smaller dose is in order before I give up. Will let you know how I go. Thanks  niqi, it goes to show how different everyone is eh. raw sensation, glad it did some good for you. Hope you find more info, and thanks for looking out. Love and peace Nic Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: tora chan on Friday 20 June, 2008 i've heard good things about this msm and want to try it myself i think. i saw an interesting video on calcium by david wolfe on you tube and he was saying how heart attack victims have this calcium build up in their arteries where parasites that feed on calcium live and they're like little oyster or clams. they are apparently what form in arthritis also and because there is no capilleries into the fingers he said you need to kill these parasites with a zapper device. he said msm can help with this too.
Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: Jenergy on Friday 20 June, 2008 you are full of info tonight Trav! Have you ever searched for parasites on youtube? ewwwww. They show them coming out of peoples faces.

Post by: tora chan on Friday 20 June, 2008 eww no. yeah the other day i had to watch seven snippets of this david wolfe vid. i just saw it and thought it looked interesting. just you tube david wolfe calcium. he gave it at raw spirit fest. hmm dare i look at scary parasites. i might have nightmares. i have seen that stuff in the world book or records though so i imagine it must be the same.

Found this pdf file with the following excerpt: "Regarding the supplement MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), Dr. Cheney stated "I really like it. It's wonderful stuff." He recommended the book The Miracle of MSM: The Natural Solution for Pain <http://virtualhometown.com/dfwcfids/books/index.html> by Stanley Jacob, William Regelson & Martin Zucker. He said, "Great book. Everything you'd ever want to know about MSM, written by a physician who's used it for 30 years in his patient population." Dr. Cheney described five benefits of MSM. (1) "MSM itself has the toxicity of water - it's non-toxic. But it's a very potent detoxifier. If you take too much MSM, you can mobilize too many toxins too quickly. It can even mobilize heavy metals, so you have to be cautious about the dose. Start low and go slow - work up gradually to the therapeutic dose, which is 6 to 9 grams a day. Most CFIDS patients can work up to 6 gms a day, but from there it can be a rocky road." (2) "MSM is a very potent anti-yeast medication. It causes yeast to blow up. Well, basically they melt. Their cell walls are destroyed. Again, you see herxheimer reactions if the dose is too high." (3) "Pain relief from MSM can be significant, particularly at 6 to 9 gms a day. This applies to most any pain, because most pain is toxicity related. Some of the pain relief accounts are pretty impressive. It's typical to hear at 6 gms, nothing, 8 gms, no relief, then suddenly at 10 gms the pain is gone. There seems to be a threshold you have to reach and then boom. The threshold will vary from person to person. I encourage patients to work gradually up to 9 gms. If the pain still has not resolved, I may try to push some patients to 12 gms. I always get a little bit concerned though, when they get to 12 gms because of one patient's experience, which I'll tell you about." (4) "MSM also helps allergies. The mucous barrier is a sulfur barrier, and the sulfur binds to allergens and keeps them away from your nasal and sinus mucosa so you don't get allergies." (5) "Another reason for CFIDS patients to take MSM is that if you measure sulfur levels in their blood and urine, most patients are usually very low. Patients get sulfur depletion very quickly trying to cope with the toxicity of this illness." Dr. Cheney had one patient who decided on his own to start with 12 grams of MSM a day. About a week into the treatment he had what Cheney called "sudden spontaneous detox". He was extremely ill with diarrhea, vomiting and flu-like symptoms. He also experienced what Cheney referred to as "suicidal ideation" - he wanted to kill himself. The episode lasted almost 12 hours and then abruptly stopped. The patient then felt much better. Cheney believes that the suicidal urges were the result of toxins that had been mobilized by the MSM and carried to the brain before being eliminated. The toxins destabilized him psychologically for a time. Obviously, this is very dangerous and definitely to be avoided. Start with a low dose and advance slowly. Cheney has never had a patient who gradually worked up to 12 grams experience an episode like this, but he warns patients to be very cautious with the higher doses. Cheney stressed the importance of buying a pharmaceutical grade MSM. As already mentioned, sulfur binds to toxins, which makes it a very potent and effective detoxifier. However, it also means that if manufactured in a non-sterile environment, it will pick up whatever is in the environment. Think of it as a sponge for toxins. If itÌs made in a garage in Mexico, it will absorb the toxins in the garage. MSM can be among the most toxic supplements on the market if itÌs exposed to toxic materials during production..." How much MSM did you take? I have big cracks on my heels and nothing, not even coconut oil, helps them. Thanks in advance. Jason. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: Jenergy on Saturday 21 June, 2008 Hi Jason,
I was taking 1 teaspoon per litre of water. Some days I would drink 3 litres other days 5. Much more than that and I would find that I didn't like the taste. I've since learned that it can be applied topically too. You could try mixing coconut oil and msm and applying that at night before sleeping. One lady from here, Panda, tells me to apply coconut oil to everything. She doesn't post often but she goes through litres and litres of the stuff with her big family and swears by it for every thing skin. Good luck! I hope they heal quickly for you. I used to leave little bloody heel prints around sometimes and it was very painful when they got really deep. xoxoxox Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: sunheart on Sunday 22 June, 2008 Hi rawsensation, how long have you been taking it? I noticed that some people continue to take it because they don’t feel good without it.
Love and peace Nic Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: missgiggles on Sunday 22 June, 2008 I noticed that some people continue to take it because they don’t feel good without it. I got to the point where I didn't like the taste of water without MSM. Then, I reached a point where I couldn't drink water with MSM. Like most things we are drawn to, I believe that (for me) it served a purpose at one point, and then my inclination was to move away from it. I still occasionally use it to brush my teeth, but I went pretty full on with MSM at one point, and for now, I think it is enough. If I am drawn again, I shall certainly wander down that path. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: sunheart on Monday 23 June, 2008 Now my migraine is gone, I'm starting the MSM again. 1/8 t to a litre of water/day.
miss giggles, what a great idea to brush our teeth with it. Tell me more about your experience with MSM and why you were drawn to it in the first place. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: missgiggles on Monday 23 June, 2008 Sunheart - I am not sure that I am able to answer your question satisfactorily, so please forgive me.
As to why I was drawn to MSM - I have no idea. It came onto my radar, I read and researched, and I tried it. I am innately curious about everything, and whilst I am keen to read others' views and experiences, I know that the best experience is my own. That is all I can really judge anything by - my own experimentation. What works for another, may not work for me, and vice versa. I am like a child, and my attention is easily swayed, so I can be totally captivated by something for a while, and then the next thing catches my eye, and I'm off..... That is just my way. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: Jenergy on Monday 23 June, 2008 I was taking it for a few months. But how many I can't say. I am... challenged when it comes to remembering time. I can never remember how many years Bill and I have been together, or how old my kids are, or indeed, how old I am. I have to ask Bill these things. He is a time king.
Miss G, how did you brush your toothy pegs with it? Just dip the brush in and away you went? That's fascinating. Did you notice any benefits. I'm rushing of to brush my teeth with it now. What a great idea. xxoxox Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: missgiggles on Monday 23 June, 2008 Jen - yep, damp toothbrush into the bag/container of msm, and then brush. Benefits? I don't know - I just like the freaky metallic taste, and the way my teeth feel afterwards.
My teeth were ruined by large doses of childhood antibiotics - I'm not sure they will ever recover from that - so I'm never going to feature in a dentist's advertisement. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: sunheart on Monday 23 June, 2008 That is just my way. miss giggle - haha, that's me all over.About your teeth, that's interesting. My baby teeth were all black from having antibiotics as a baby. They pulled those out when I was four and for some reason, it didn't affect my second set. I heard there's a third set if we live long enough, maybe there's luck for us yet. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: Phill on Thursday 11 September, 2008 Ok so ive gone through a whole 450g bottle and yeah id do it again. Its hard for me to scientifically sythesise the 'why' but yeah ive noticed improvements in my hair and skin. Im not sure that its exactly helped in getting rid of scar tissue. In this instance i would try other things and apply them topically on my skin in the affected areas. EDTA or DMSO i cant remember which one.
Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: sunheart on Thursday 11 September, 2008 Well, I have a full 450gm less 4-5 teaspoons of MSM Powder (Sunfood Nutrition) from Raw Pleasure if anyone wants it. MSM is definitely not for me. My dreams and body screams NO. I bought Spirulina instead, no problems.
Nic Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: Phill on Thursday 11 September, 2008 Hi sun heart. I was actually going to write more of a reply with my experience of MSM.
I did too much to start with in conjunction with too much of other stuff and this was a terrible mistake. Ive done alot of fish over my time, and therefore i believe i have built up alot of mercury toxicity. Cases like this, is probably why its suggested to start out with minimal doses. Its always best to educate yourself on a product like that before you just start 'going for it.'. All the best.. Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: sunheart on Saturday 13 September, 2008 Hi Phil,
The thing that I got most out of this experience is to conclude if a substance consumed is enervating, or aiding a detoxification process. When fasting or eating only raw fruits and veggies, I usually gain energy and clarity. The smallest amount of MSM sends me off to sleep, the same way eating cooked food does. Therefore, MSM enervates me. My dreams tried to warn me and now I know they're guiding me... Moving forward and upwards. Love Nic Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: erthmum on Saturday 08 November, 2008 thought i'd add my expereince with MSM. I bought some before i got pregnant and had it ocassionally with the intention to do a course of it in order to detox as well as help heal some ugly scars that i have.....anyway i got pregnant and completely forgot about it until we recently went to WA. My diet wasn't the best and I began to develop an itchy rash all over my growing belly (which apparently is quite common for some women during pregnancy), my immediate thought was that my liver was not happy so i began scouting healthfood stores (which seem to be few and far between over there..or maybe i was in the wrong place at the wrong time) for dandelion tincture, when i was in one in particular in Geraldton and while i was talking to the assisstant about it I suddenly had a brainwave about MSM. So she happened to have some and i began taking it. The first day I took 1/2 tsp in 500ml water. That night I had the worst violent dream about stabbing someone. The next day i realised that i probably hadn't consumed enough water throughout the previous day so i tried it again and really upped my fluid intake on top of that. Well, my rash was gone within 3 days. I have been taking 1/4 tsp in a glass of water first thing ever since (about 2.5 weeks now) and the itchy rash hasn't returned. I'm not particulalry concerned about taking it during pregnancy as it supports my liver and helps it deal with the pregnancy hormones as well as providing an essential building block for the baby. So far so good...but you do need to have heaps of water/fluid while you are taking it..even a seemingly small amount.
Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: sunheart on Sunday 09 November, 2008 Wow erthmum, that was interesting, thanks for sharing. I've tried upping my water intake but that didn't help me. I still have a full bottle of MSM powder if anyone wants it... otherwise I'm just gonna biff it.
Title: Re: Whats your opinion on msm? Post by: RawGreenGoddess on Monday 10 November, 2008 in early raw days i tried some....anything processed or not whole ripe raw food, doesnt work for me...i biffo~ed mine in disgust too...some peeps love it though...so dont ditch it yet babe....
drink heaps of water and fruits and greens and you be feeling light of foot again,in know time lol |
