Title: seasonal fruit and veg
Post by: tora chan on Wednesday 03 September, 2008
i would like to try and eat with the seasons a bit more and was wondering if somebody could clarify what is the go with some fruit and veg that i don't know what the season is for them.

strawberries and all berries? are they more a summer/winter/year round thing? i get really confused. i think i read in japan they are a summer fruit but i thought i've heard they're a winter fruit or something and berries are more a cold environment fruit? a chinese medicine book i read said how eating them in winter is bad?!?! but i've had quite alot of strawberries and berries this winter.

stone fruits? what are they and which season/climate?

and lastly, when i move to japan if i ever graduate uni, i wonder if you can get any sort of in season fruits in a really cold spot up in the north like hokkaido which is near russia. i don't think i've ever seen fruit in a place that is thick with snow. anyone live in a really cold climate?

Hi tora chan,

I think the answer to this question is completely dependant upon where you live!  Are you in Japan now, or in Australia, and what part?

In places that have cold winters, strawberries and most berries are definitely summer fruit.  I remember having a wild blueberry bush in my backyard as a kid in New England, and also going to pick strawberries at a nearby farm.  Stone fruit is definitely summer fruit as well.  I'm in Melbourne at the moment, and I'm getting so sick of apples, pears and oranges.  If I only ate seasonally I wouldn't be able to eat Queensland bananas and I'd probably starve.

It's so hard to be raw in a place with a cold winter if you only eat what's in the season.  It's a lot easier if you eat cooked cause you can eat lots of root vegetables, stewed fruit, etc.

hey Tora...you should be able to get a seasonal chart from your local friendly grocer or co-op..
or try googling?

winters a breeze for raw eating..(sorry i do beg to differ)....this is when you enjoy the dates and oranges and bananas and lots of greens, and maybe have a couple more avos a week,or nuts and seeds to warm you up....and apples and pears of course....now the kiwis are coming in..the lovely mandarins.....

grapes are closer to summer..as are the lovely cherries...this is Sa anyway...and yes what is available does vary from state to state....stone fruit is def summer time fruit

ohh man the zuchinnis are incredible right now....and celery and the lettuce and cukes..off the chart!!

thanks for the input. i should realise that i have an organic garden outside and there are strawberries coming up red just out of winter oops    and i guess what i can buy at organic markets ect is a good indication too

btw vildechaya i'm currently on the gold coast same as jen  moving to japan next year. looking forward to loads of melons, peaches, yuzu, mikan, cherries, strawberries and momo peaches but if i live too far north i don't know if fruit grows in such a cold snowy environment. i'll just have to insist on the south for my placement.

Heya Trav! Good news. At the Miami markets there is a guy with a stall who sells seeds. He has a bucket load of knowledge in his skull just waiting to be shared. He is awesome!
