Hi hamblins

i am not sure how long ago you switched to raw, but it is apparently very normal to loose a lot of weight in the first year and some people get really really slim at that time and then they rebuild the muscles and gain a bit of body fat too. apparently there is a lot of toxins in the fat tissue so this is prart of detox.

here is a quote from the interview with raw fooder Tim Trader

"everybody is worried about weight loss. this is because we are in a society that considers obesity as normal. Society looks at people slightly obese as healthy. we have to get over this addiction, You will loose weight on a raw food diet, but we all have to clean house at some point. I tell most of my clients "you will gain it back again, i promise, and it always come true. their weight may not be as much as it was before - which is ok."

Hope that helps

fantastic post princessbee - very helpful. Great topic Grapegirl! I am glad you've started it.

I have been aware of addictive nature of grains, but i though it was mainly wheat and I had no idea that they were so damaging. They look so innocent - especially these dense European breads....

Colonics are worth their price, for sure! Especially when starting on raw you may experience a lot of headaches and other detox symptoms - it really helps to clean the colon otherwise the toxins are being reabsorbed many times and your liver gets really overworked. Colonics have also hydrating effect and they can help with detox related headache. They helped me some time ago - I begged my way into colonics when I was detoxing - I was lucky someone has cancelled and I could have one straight away - I was in agony before and felt like new afterwards.

Good luck with your challenge grapegirl - take one day at a time and don't think I will have to give up on berad for ever. Just think - I won't have any bread today -and don't worry about tomorrow. Keep affirming and believing - If I can do it you can too, trust me!

Hi Grapegirl, welcome to the forum   ohyeah ohyeah ohyeah

You are certainly not on your own - the difference between you and the majority of the population is that you are prepared to do something about your grain addiction. It has a hold on all of us... I can see myself going down that road over and over again, and although I have been primarily raw for a couple of years, bread is my no 1 enemy (no 2 is cheese!). I can feel the pull every time I eat a cracker/slice of bread. I just crave more and more... This is compleltely insane feeling and have never experienced anything like it. I do believe this is a physiological addiction rather than a psychological one.

Thanks Princessbee for your words of wisdom - I have had a horrible cravings for bread in the last couple of weeks and it is sooooooo difficult to fight! Fruit for me for the next week or so! I will stuff myself silly with things that have pits and peels and smell heavenly!!!

yes, May, Bikram is absolutely great. (sorry I was 'shouting' before - my Caps were locked and I had to go)

The best thing about bikram is that you feel horrible if go on full stomach or after drinking alcohol even a few days before. In other words, you need to be well hydrated and not full of heavy foods to enjoy the class. So it's sooooooooo easy on raw! All you do is just eat fruit till about lunch time and drink a lot of water and then go to an avro class feeling great! So nothing to be scared of and it used to keep me raw too (for the fear of feeiling unwell during the class, hehe!) and kept me alcohol free (same reason).

I USED TO DO BIKRAM YOGA IN WINTER - THAT KEPT ME WARM FOR HOURS AFTERWARDS!!!
8  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / RAW Chat / Re: slow food on: Tuesday 07 August, 2007
from my understanding slow food movement developed in response to a fast and packaged foods and the movement focuses on celebrating food and plasuer of eating, reconnecting with food sources and reeducating people about them and the health aspects of food and socialising etc.

It is a little bit more pleasure than health oriented in general (although there is nothing as tasty as fruit, really!!!). And their food is often cooked, although they may focus on pesticise free, organic, or at least more natural foods

But in  a way both movements responded to a distorted view of food (and what can be called food) caused by mass production of convenient, packaged and highly processed food. They just bring different solutions to this problem. they use 'natural food' differently.

Hi May, you are doing so well!!! And turing your man around too!

And you are doing so well starz - fantastic motivation!

just wanted to share with you my newest experience with GS

Someone posted here a GS recipe with kiwi fruit and i made it with half a lemon juice (my blender do not blend citrus very well) and a pear, spinach and a lot of kiwi. I also bought a small thermos ($12 in big w) to carry it to work.

I could not see the colour (because I had it straigt from the thermos)- and that helped (i have been struggling with green and am a very visual person. And it wasn't that sweet and was in fact quite tangy (I didn't like the sweetness of many of my previous GSs too much). But this one was just right and tasted delicious!!!

Basically, i like my greens savoury! So i like salads but also make warm curry soups using greens (celery, brocooli, you name it!), kind of similar to curried carrot soup with some warm water in it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for explaining this, i have just looked on the net and it says that the mollasses is not raw. here is an extract
from http://www.organicfooddirectory.com.au/molasses.php

When sugar cane is harvested, the leaves are stripped, the juice extracted by crushing or mashing, and then boiled and processed to extract the sugar. The results of the first boiling and processing is first molasses – this has the highest sugar content. The results of the second boiling is second molasses. Second molasses is darker in colour and has a slightly bitter taste. Black strap molasses is from the third boiling.

Would your mum have it instead of sugar?

Rydy, your response just came up when i was posting this...

Good points waterberry, I had similar thoughts when reading Rudy's post. Not much i can add here.

Maybe just one thought; there is nothing as demaging to the body as negative thoughts and stress. No amount of cooked fat will make me feel as bed as when i get seriously upset. certainly steemed vegies, soups and toasted rye breads are still healthy options for winter nights. It's better than to stress about not getting enough food or eating without enjoyment and being upset about trying to make it too difficult for yourself. See how you feel when you have some cooked veggies and judge for yourself.

Same for eating out, joining your family for a meal or eating what people cook for you. I would refuse to eat meat under these circumstances but would give in to soups and vegies. There used to be times when I would stress myself silly about 'what am i going to do if there is no salad' scenario, and the stress was probably more damaging than a bowl of soup anyway - once I worked myself into a headache and couldn't go out at all...

On the other hand, we do dinners with friends at the market every weeks and i started bying a few punnets of strawberries for the table and  for me - everyone munches on them and then their food looks so bland and silly by comparison. But many are locked in a belief that fruit is not a proper meal!

The summer will come and we will all rejoice!!!  ohyeah then we can have watermelons and mangoes parties!!!.

Hi starz,

I always used to get them when i detoxed and my liver was working overtime. A few times when i was really bed i went and had colonics and it helped.  Apparently, it may also mean that the kidneys are overworked. Apart from detox, i am not sure.

Why would mollases and wheat germs help?

I have been raw in iron last year and am trying to drink GSs and eat greens and I seem to be improving now. And the GSs are definitelly raw...

Hi Brett, you said in you post that you 'let go of the enzyme belief', could you please tell me what you mean. It's likely that you explained it elsewhere, but I don't read many topics (lack of time, not interest). Is there some new theory re enzymes that I missed, are they not as useful and important as we thought? Or is it you personal choice?

15  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / RAW Chat / Re: 811RV and fats on: Thursday 02 August, 2007
I wonder whether the amount of fat you need would depend on the diet before going raw. Some people eat only a little fat and may have a decent diet already that consist of some grains but also a lot of fruit and veggies, even if some of them are cooked. Surely they couldn't tolerate as much fat as someone who ate meat/chips/junk kind of food?

not sure how it works, but seems logical to me to take into account a starting point.
