Wasn't sure where to post this... so decided here was ok!
I am going to Perth in a week or so for some work and when I was over there earlier this year - I couldn't for the life of me find any young coconuts!

I know there are some Perth natives on this forum (Jen, Joss) I wonder if they might know of a secret supply and point me to its whereabouts!

Would be most appreciative as can't imagine a week without them and don't think you are allowed to bring fruit into WA!

merci,
JLK.

Hi JLK,

I don't know about coconuts in Perth - if I remember right they are not to be found. Hopefully that has changed.

It is allowed to bring coconuts into Perth though. I called quarantine last year to check about sending coconuts to Jen. We had discussed it here and were worried it would be restricited. All was well though!

Cheers,
Sheryl

Its great to see some new Perth posters on here!

After coming back from my recent trip, where I indulged in young coconuts in Port Douglas,  I am going to start the hunt seriously in Perth.  I am going to find some dammit!  I will search every asian grocer, high and low. They must be somewhere to be found.   The coconut, pawpaw, banana smoothie I had was good enough to commit huge amounts of effort in searching!

Young coconuts are worlds apart from old dry ones.

Well, it was unexpected, but the search didnt take me long!!

I was in Farmer Jacks supermarket in Subiaco today and I found 2 young coconuts for $2.99 each !!   If that was not enough excitement..  when I got to the register, they rang up at $3.99 each,  and so the lady gave them to me free because they have been rung up on the til at the wrong price !!

2 FREE young coconuts to one very happy Perth shopper !

I am going to try to have a chat to the fruit&veg section manager next time and ask them to keep a regular supply for me.

Perth is the new hot bed for raw foodists from what I can see. We have Perth person number 5 visiting in a one month period. How wild is that! Now we just need to set up another picnic soon!

Raw Aussie who has posted here a year or so ago is over here for a holiday right now but will be home sometime in May. And there's Jen and UrbanForager, and Katie and Simon! WOW! Add these 5 to all the excitment happening over there and who knows what will happen!

hello perth people
what a great town[ my fathers family are from there] I am pretty sure coconuts would grow in nth west aus? Rockhampton is the supposed southern boundry in QLD.I have seen coconuts with nuts on in Bris. Select trees around Maryborough and Hervey bay are conistent, mainly Malay dwarf trees[a different species] they are smaller and not as much juice[less than 1/2 ?] but are easier to get at smiley, you can stand on your car and get at most of them.I think some one sooner or later will do some breeding work on these to get strains suitable for more southerly locations-I hope.anyway I know of a litte ripper in childers if anyone would like to try growing one-better near the beach. We all should whack afew in and see what happens.....
