Maybe some can remember that my brother & I were looking for a farm a few months back?

Well we've just bough 2.5 acres in Coffs Harbour, NSW
Spent today ripping out old barbed wire fences, and it was the most satisfying feeling ever!
despite the countless scratches & having barbed wire whip you in the face
(was wearing saftey glasses of course - saftey first guys), anyway it felt good.

So it's going to take some time to get things growing & set up, and i guess i'm jumping the gun,
but i just want to get the word out that if ever a raw foodist is driving through Coffs Harbour, then they should pay us a visit, and recharge with some fresh fruit & vege.... but as i said, i'm jumpin the gun (it's nothing but grass right now...)

So I quit my job at the steelworks (in wollongong) & quit Engineering at uni last month,
and have now moved home to Coffs & bought this property (with mum & dad & brother Ryan)
& now i'm studying Sustainable Architechture & Permaculture.

Hopefully in a year or so's time, there shouldn't be a patch of grass on the property...
We're designing a huge food forest, with a huge diverstiy of tropical, subtropical fruits
(yes i will attempt to grow durian!)
medicinal & culinary herbs in JUICING QUANTITIES! (not tiny window pots!)
& as many different vegetables & edible greens as we can grow.

It's hard to describe, but just try to imagine a rainforest, where every plant is edible (kinda like willy wonka's chocoate factory) cuz you might even find some cacao !!!
it'll be like a raw foods tresure hunt!

then there'll be stuff for the more insane, like stinging nettle (those of you who haven't a stinging nettle smoothie.. well, you havn't tried a stinging nettle smothie, and should.) & crazy indian medicinals like ginko biloba & even NEEM!

The groundcover beneth the food forest will also host an array of edible flowers (which double as food for beneficial insects)

So hopefully noone will leave without having learn't something, & hopefully I learn something from each visitor too.

Anyhow, enough dreaming there's work to be done & grass to be exhiled!
i'll keep you posted on how it comes along.

hopefully i'll have a decent crop of vege's & greens this summer,
so it'll still be worth people stopping in (it's about 10 seconds off the highway, so a good spot for a break!

hmmm, i seriously doubt anyone's going to read alll that.

Well, I read it all! That sounds awesome, it is so cool that you are pursuing what you really want to do at uni, there is no point studying something if you aren't passionate about it. Good luck with the durian growing and if I'm ever that way (can't imagine I will be but you never know  smiley) I"ll be sure to stop in. Stinging nettle smoothie... there's one for the 'must try' list!

That farm sounds awesome. I would love a farm to grow my own vegies and fruit. You could definitely take school kids on tours of your farm and show them the permaculture and how we don't need chemicals to enjoy nature's bounty. In each child you show the way the seed of raw is sown.

Well, I ( and my family of 7 children, going on Cool  will be passing through Coffs Harbour at the end of September. Shame it's probably not enough time to be more established. We are only on 1 acre but am finally getting it together in the gardening department. Just got my order of seeds from Select Organic ( Eden Seeds) and am waiting on some mushroom compost in the next few days and then the planting begins cheesy cheesy. Can't wait for that produce to spring up and be ripe for the eating. Mm mmmmm.
I am not a big green thumb so have to do the searching out as I want to companion plant and keep it as natural/organic as I can. In fact if it's not organic I would keep searching till I found something, and there are places I've come across now that i know could help me. Anyhow I'm just waffling and had better get moving now.

Cheers ,

that sounds awesome RFB!!!! I have to go via your way when going down to visit my dad so i'll be sure to look you up next time i'm heading thru!! Even if there's no food happening yet, it's always great to meet other raw foodies  cheesy

Good luck with everything and I hope it keeps giving you satisfaction and growth! I run an organic food business and when customers say thank you for giving them access to great quality orgainc food at a cheap price that they can afford rather than having to eat non-organic due to financial reasons, i always feel a nice glow inside...like I'm contributing in some small way!  smiley

Enjoy,
Georgia Smiley

ps. Rabbit...where are you in Brisbane as I live here too?

Good Luck

Hi RFB... I just posted  a repy to you on another thread that you can ignore now that I've read this one! I had asked if you were still living in Wollongong.. but obviously not!
Very happy for you, your plans sound fantastic.. but disappointed as I was excited by the possibility of a raw food scene here in the Gong!
All the best on your farm..

Hey, yeh my bro's still down in the gong, so you can catch up with him.
But when i'm down there next it'll be a big raw foods fest for sure!
The gong will be raw foods central yet... jus wait & see lol

hey thanks to all those who expressed interest in the raw foods farm,
I look foward to people dropping in on their way through....
I think i'm gonna need a big sign on the highway tho "Hey you! raw foodist, next left.
or an improved version of that...

I'm about to head up to northen NSW for a 2 week course with the worlds best in Permaculture...
While i'm up there i'll be spending allot of time rambling through the rainforests looking for wild edible herbs & whatever crazy rainforest berry's come my way!

lol, i'm wanting to write a book or moreso a field guide to identifying wild herbs, in the wild.
for now, i wanna call it The Raw Fodders Guide to Wild Edibles
but it could take me years to write.. so long as i don't kill myslef in the process.

wish me luck!

Hi Paul. Can i ask where you are studying the Permaculture course?  Also, when you use the raw eggs in your smoothies, do you add them to the fruit/green smoothies or some other type of smoothie.  I've got 3 little ones 3 years old and under, and have been thinking about adding raw eggs and yoghurt or kefir into their diet.

Hadn't seen your posts before on this forum, but you are definitely inspiring for two young guys!!

Hi 'mum', no we don't put much time into the forum these days! Studies & building take up too much time.

Permaculture design courses (PDC) are generally just 2 weeks (theory) - from then on its up to the individual to experience the practical side of permculture.
I did my course a sept 06' with Geoff Lawton on his farm at the Channon (near Lismore) - I couldn't reccomend any better place to do it, but there are many other, very competent teachers around Aust.

Raw eggs go terribly into pure green (watery) smoothies, which really accentuates the raw egg flavour!
The flavour is best disguised when theyre put into creamier nut milks etc. with lots of bannana's.
there's a few flavours like nutmeg, and vanilla that seem to mask the flavour.
we sometimes use essential oils such as lemon myrtle or peppemint (only ~1 drop per smoothie!)

I wouldn't add more than 2 or 3 eggs to a smoothie, & if its just greens & fruit then don't add any egg!

Its really hard to judge whether the raw eggs are gonna spoil the smoothie or not....
We've had terrible experiences with some whereby I'd rather just down the eggs seperate
But Just yesterday I had 4 eggs in a 1L smoothie that wasl ~60% greens with nana's, avo and grapes and there was hardly any aftertaste of egg... may have been the combination of weeds or fruit but she went down well.
and yeah the essential oils go well... just no more than 1 drop as mentioned!

hey, i'm jealous your living my dream!

na thats fantastic mate good on ya...

what are the land prices around coffs these days, i've looked at moving there several times cause its close to qld and sydney. i did a permaculture back garden but it didn't go too well in perth as there seemed to be too much drainage, but i solved it by digging my garden below the ground level and then it took off and i didn't need to water so much.

good luck i will definatly love to drop by next time i'm down that way...
