Good morning all,

As the subject suggests, could this amino acid help?

I try to approach life with a holistic view.....not just one thing will cure all.  I'm NOT looking for a one-pill answer to depression.  I've been through too much to know that it takes more than popping a pill or taking some powder to help depression.....as many of you who suffer depression know.

I have looked this up on the internet and it seems promising.

Yes, maybe my diet could be better....but, heck, I'm eating better than I've eaten in years.

Yes, maybe I could exercise more.......but, heck, I'm glad I'm able to get out of bed some days.

Yes, maybe my mental thinking could improve......but heck once again, I'm happy I even think enough to move some days.

And if.....ONLY IF.....I could press the delete button on my stress, that would be fantastic!!!!

But alas, I am who I am at the moment.

Has anyone tried 5htp?  There is ST John's Wort.  What about MACA?  Any other superfoods that may help?  Anything else that people have tried that has helped.

Any help would be appreciated from all and sundry.

Thanks in anticipation.

RoarOnRaw, while I do agree with you that there is obviously no one-pill "solution" for depression, there are certainly many natural and synthesized substances out there than can really improve our quality of life.  My personal belief is, if there are plants out there that can make us feel calmer, happier, and more in tune with the planet, then by all means we should be exploring them.

In terms of your specific question, whether or not 5-htp helps has a lot to do with the cause of your anxiety/depression.  If your seratonin levels are low, then perhaps 5-htp will be effective, or you might even prefer straight tryptophan.  However sometimes people with high seratonin still get anxiety and often find GABA more useful (like me), but you don't want to play around with GABA unless you have pretty stable seratonin levels.

The only way to really know what works best for you is to experiment, but cautiously.  I suggest having an in-depth read on this topic at the forums at shaman australis: http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php? and do a search for 5-htp.

Let us know how you go.

Hi,

Brain Clements of Hippocrates i America swears by L-Tryptophan and I am told that it is even a principal ingredient in many anti-depressant pharmaceutical drugs which I found surprising - drug companies incorporating amino acids in their products!

Detoxification can be beneficial - especially the liver. Coffee enemas can provide instant relief if you are intrepid enough. The liver is the primary organ for detoxification and a toxic liver can cripple blood chemistry. Gerson used these to great effect when treating his cancer patients. Even sever mental conditions such as schizophrenia were concurrently cured.

Oxidative therapies can be very helpful. I have taken Hydrogen peroxide orally and you can feel the effect in minutes. But be warned, do your homework first if you are going to play with this stuff. It is worth the effort but can slingshot on you if you do not follow the correct protocols.  However there are many oxidative supplements at health food stores which are very safe and can give you a lift. Read Ed McCabe's books to learn about these.

Just walking while largely ignored is greatly underestimated. You can walk off a bout of depression in an hour or two. Trouble is - who feels like going outside for a walk when you are depressed.

Trace minerals in sea water can have a positive influence. Try taking a tablespoon of sea water or supplement every day.

All these have on thing in common. They improve general cellular respiration and blood chemistry and it is ofen overlooked that the brain is also a body organ.

This may also be of help:

Thanks for your replies,

I really do appreciate your time.

Both your replies makes a lot of sense.

I'm a believer in the methods of Dr Richard Schulze and he definitely advocates for detoxification of elimination channels.....and that should be the FIRST step taken in any healing program.

I have all this "knowledge" from what I've read, yet putting it into practise can be a lot harder than expected....and confusing.  Sometimes I'm so overwhelmed with all this "knowledge" that I don't know where to start.  Maybe starting with detoxing.

I will look around for 5htp and see how it goes.  Going for a colonic might be an integral part of my healing too.  Detox, detox, detox!!!

Neo, you say that sea water may be helpful.  Would good macrobiotic sea salt be as beneficial?

As for cellular respiration, that makes sense.  They're the basic building blocks of us all, and if they're not healthy.....then the bigger picture isn't either.

Thanks once again.

Hey Rita,  I feel for you so deeply. Depression is a shocking and difficult thing to deal with. I lived with it for most of my life.

Only since changing to this way of eating have I felt good. I felt great on a certain anti-depressant for awhile but then it backfired and the result was worse and more violent than the depression itself.

I like that you are asking 'how' can you find happiness. You will always get answers this way. Look at your life too and see what pressures you can remove if possible. If something there is causing great pressure, how can you change it? Can it be removed from your life? Is there someone who can help?

Is there something else going on that is scary? I know that even now I can have a bout of depression that will have me focusing on my lack of this or that or how crappy I am at things when the real issue is sitting in the corner not being dealt with.

I've not tried what you are talking about. I dont' know what it is. Greens are amazing for calming if you are feeling stressed. And fruit is a happiness food!

Are you able to do something small for yourself each day? Even if it's just painting your toenails?

Or, remove the focus from yourself and your emotions to focus on something else? I have a book that I found helpful called "You can be happy" that you are more than welcome to borrow if you like. Just let me know!

Hugs....

A series of colonics may well prove benefical. The coffee enemas however work by stimulating the liver to throw off bile carrying away toxins with it which may otherwise paralyse the liver providing great relief. The coffee is absorbed by the portal vein in the colon and carried to the liver.

Moderation is the key here since salt is essentially BAD for body chemistry but the invaluable trace elements it contains are lacking in agriculture. Since your body only required these in trace amounts you don't need to take much. The purest unrefined salt is celtic sea salt. Salt water is very dilute by comparison and "relatively" safe, containing only small percentage of disolved salts.

EFA's may also help, the best forms being ground flax seed or walnuts preferably home-grown here in OZ if you casn get them.

Just PM me if you ever wish to discuss your options. I am happy to help.

Good Health,
Neo.
