I grew up on the island Guam which is north of Australia. I now live in the U.S. Anybody from Guam or used to live on Guam? In her wild days before she 'found religion' she went to Guam with a female friend of hers chasing American sailors.

I actually did not see many sailors there. However, I noticed the following break-down of military people as follows: 1) Air force personnel as there is a large air force base there. 2) Navy men -- not necessarily sailors. There is a small naval base there. This could include pilots or personnel stationed on Guam for a couple of years. 3) A few marines as I think there was at the time a very small marine branch or something. one of my ncos was shipped there right before i was discharged from the af. no one was sad to see him go & he was thrilled to get out of ks. are the snakes as numerous as animal planet would have you believe? Title: Re: The Guam connection Post by: Rosal on Tuesday 20 June, 2006 Hi Motherwytch, I have not seen the TV shows that talk about the snakes but I heard that they kind of sensationalized the snake situation.
Most people from Guam I think are amused (and bemused) by how much attention the media has given to the snakes. Guam, although built up with houses, tourist hotels, etc. in many spots, still has large areas of jungle growth. I believe this is where the snakes are. So perhaps if 1 goes into the jungle and looks hard they can find the non-poisonous brown or rat snakes. I only saw 2 live ones during the time I was there and saw more snakes in North Carolina, U.SA. when I lived there...And the ones in North Carolina are poisonous! Most people I know on Guam don't run across many snakes if at all. Title: Re: The Guam connection Post by: Sheryl on Tuesday 20 June, 2006 My mom thought the same thing when I moved to Australia... I think the average Canadian think we have to shake spiders out of our shoes each morning before we put them on (there is that much publicity about poisonous spiders in Australia)... the reality is different though!

The snakes are infesting the jungles and are killing alot of local wildlife. They said the snakes slither over power lines and cause blackouts. But this show may be many years out of date.
My sister was invited by some navy personnel she met in a bar in Perth. They were from a ship that was in Fremantle for a rest. That is the only info I have on Guam. Yeah that's typically the image of Guam. Well, I'm glad at least you have seen another part of it. Maybe one day you can come and visit. Yes that's definitely true Guam was snake free -- until WWII when those critters got into the ships. Darn the war! ;) The brown snakes did get in the power lines and cause black outs. They did wipe out a bird specie or 2 but I'm not sure what the latest is...
