Title: All Natural Hair?
Post by: FreedomB on Monday 14 May, 2007
Hi guys! I know there are a number of people here who don't wash their hair with anything other than water... I gave up using conditioner just over a month ago and now I am giving up shampoo - just wondering, in other people's experience, how long does it take for hair to adjust to the lack of chemicals and get lovely and soft and shiny? I haven't used shampoo since last Wednesday (have been rinsing daily with water) and my hair is currently thick and heavy and grosss with all the grease. I'm prepared to stick it out for the long haul, as I know it will be worth it, just wondering how long that is likely to be.
Thanks in advance!
From a very greasy Freedom  ^_^

hi Freedom,
i think it took about two or three months for hair and skin (no soap either) to balance out fully.   It shouldn't hurt to use a bit of shampoo or soap, but try lemon juice or juiced greens (use fine filter) or something similar to help with the transition every now and then, they are very good and refreshing.

Apple cider is also good as a rinse to cut some of the oil.  Use about 1/4 to 1/2 a cup diluted in a litre of warm water and pour this through your hair.  Don't wash it out - the smell of the cider vinegar goes away when it's dry.

havent used shampoo for over a year i reckon. less toxins the better. pefurmes, make up etc..just another corporate way to hinder our true natural self from thriving and shining.

after visiting pattaya in thailand a few years ago, every time i see someone wearing makeup i cant help but think of those lovely thai lady boys...lol! is it a he or a she? my mind thinks when i see lipstick n foundation.

and fb on hair, i reckon hydration has a massive role to play. i had only 1 warm shower since dec 05 and my hair has never felt better. hot water just dries us out and thrashes our skin and hair. cold water showers get our skin and hair better than ever. just like the pantene ad..'it wont happen overnight, but it wil happen!"

Thanks for this thread, I have been suffering from itchy scalp for years and nothing has helped really, so am going to try to simply lose the chemicals and do the raw hair thing, thanks again, Francesca x

Great idea Francesca!
It's now been just over a week since I gave up the shampoo and my hair has gotten over the really oily "you could fry chips on that" (according to my Mum!) stage. It is still fairly greasy but not unbearable, plus I'm losing a lot less than I was (suddenly there's nothing in my hair brush!) and it is hardly ever knotty, which is a pleasant side effect I wasn't expecting.
I was going to try the apple cider or green juice but decided to go totally natural and stick to good old water!  -_-

Interesting idea, but my scalp gets very very very itchy unless I wash my hair at least every 3 days. It gets so itchy that I can't sleep until I go and wash my hair (i've had to do it in the middle of the night!!)

Hi Freedom,

One of David's cousins is a hairdresser and she said that the number one most important thing in hair care is to rinse, rinse and rinse again to get rid of all the shampoo before moving on to the conditioner, and then rinse mega heaps again to get rid of all the conditioner.

Don't use a hairdryer too hot or for too long either.

I hope that helps you - it solved my really bad split end problem when my hair was long!

Love
May

May I think you've been copying what Neet used to do and speed-reading a bit too much here...  :ohyeah: I gave up conditioner a couple of months ago and my hair dealt really well with it so now I've given up shampoo too. I'm rinse rinse rinsing my hair every day but not in between anything. I've never used a hairdryer.
But thanks for your input anyway!

How is your hair now Freedom? I've decided to try this throughout june and july. How exiting! And August as well after reading Rachan's hair. Damn it, I should just start now! Ok I will. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek.

Ok. Today is my second day with no shampoo. It's 8:20am and already I'm longing for a shampoo. How will I go for six weeks?

I'm worried about the smell but I'm going to try the vinegar rinse. Can I put essential oils in that to make my hair smell prettier?

I'm worried about my pillowcases... will there be oil stains in the morning? I'll have to use extra pillow cases.

Luckily I bought myself some hairties last week and they will be getting used that's for sure. I'm very exited about this. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Thanks Freedom.

Maybe put a towel on your pillowcase to get you through the hardest weeks.....

Good idea Sheryl. I might even get an old towel and make a towel pillow case or just put some straps on it so I don't move it during the night. I have to do some sewing at some stage anyhow.

Thanks for getting me thinking!

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: FreedomB on Sunday 27 May, 2007
Thanks for asking Dragonfly... it has now been 2 and 1/2 weeks since I washed it with shampoo and, as my mum said today "it has come along a lot in the last few days." The roots were intially really oily and gross but now they are feeling fairly good and there is just a patch at the back that is quite greasy. I am losing a lot less in my hairbrush, which is nice. There is still a way to go before it is totally stunning (as I know it eventually will be! ) but for only 2 and 1/2 weeks, I think it's going well!

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?

Hmmmm. That's awesome Freedom. I was talking to a friend of mine just the other day and she saw something on TV, but can't remember where or when, and the tv people took 3 women and challenged them to not wash their hair. Two couldn't bring themselves to get to the end and the third woman said she would never ever go back!
I'm now on day four and my hair is very greasy and stiff up near the roots and frizzy at the bottom. I think it will be ponytail land for me for awhile. I may even buy myself a new hat so I don't gross out the SAD mummies at my children's school!

Hello, i'm joining you guys too!!!  Am in Thailand at the moment and decided on a number 3 buzz cut as I wanted 100% raw hair to go with the 100% raw me!!!  Over the years i have tortured my hair with highlights, lowlights, straightening, blowdrying daily and product overload, so I've decided to ditch all of that along with the hair and start afresh fresh!!! Its been over a week now with no washing and all's well, however it is only a few mms long!!! I look forward to reading your no washing progress, happy days, Nadia Xx

Freedom, Jen - I'm sure both of you look gorgeous anyway!

My hair is about bra strap length and I wear it up most of the time at the moment anyway, so was thinking of giving it a go. My head itches after four days or so of not washing, so I might try the vinegar rinse for the first few weeks. Not sure yet, will just see how it goes.

I have stopped using soap on my body. I loofah everyday and body-brush a few times a week (thanks for that suggestion Freedom) and my skin feels good. No dryness. I was using goatsmilk soap (Billy Goat Soap) because I get eczema normally, but haven't had it come up. Yey! I think eating raw has made the difference there. I've been getting outbreaks on the face, but I think that is detox related. I use almond oil at night and that seems to help.

Now I just have to work on the laundry thing...

Raw makes a difference in so many ways. I was going to say it's almost magical but I guess that we are under more of a spell when we eat addictive, cooked, dead food. Loving the truth!

I would love to give this a go but I have dermities (sp?) on my scalp so I am not game within abut 2-3 days of not washing it just drives me insane (Have to go and have a shower and wash my hair I cant stop scratchin). Maybe the vinigar would help I dont know I just dont think I am game yet but it would save me a lot of money on shampoo. Bella hates her hair being washed so Pete just rinses it in the shower and her hair is looking beautiful she hasnt used any shampoo for about 4 or 5 weeks. I think I will give her Shampoo to my nephew and niece to use and leave her shampoo free as well as Connor.

How is your hair going Freedom and Jen I am going to be watching this thread now!!!!!

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: Jenergy on Wednesday 30 May, 2007
Hi Angie,

My hair is very oily. I did the vinegar rinse but wouldn't bother again. It balanced it out a little but it's back to how it was before the rinse today. I'd have to rinse with vinegar every day! I'll just wait and see how it goes. I've got a hose thing that I attach one end to a tap with and it's like a shower at the other end. The shower end has really long brush type bristles on it that are nearly a cm apart and I massage my scalp with this every morning. My head is starting to get very itchy and the massaging helps. I think it's the skin on my head detoxing all the chemicals out. When I went raw I got very itchy and burny at some of my joints and would just wash the area. This feels the same.

How are you going Freedom? Any tips? I think it's my one week date tomorrow. I'm sure the last time I washed was last Thursday morning.

Post by: FreedomB on Wednesday 30 May, 2007
Well, I'm up to three weeks today since last hair wash and I'm happy to say it is almost there! I have this one patch at the back, just above the nape of my neck, that is still really greasy but apart from that my hair is basically as soft and nice as it was before!  :yahh:
I think the massaging sounds like a good idea Jen... I have been really sort of scrubbing my hair in the last few days - working it around, through my fingers etc as though there is shampoo in it. I was thinking about the whole toothpaste discussion, how it is the brushing action that cleans more than the toothpaste itself, so I started using a 'washing' action in my hair and it seems to have helped.
Apart from that though my one big tip is patience! Oh and try getting a headband (I have 3 like the one I'm wearing in my avatar, they're getting plenty of use!) or a hat!  :police: ... this little guy has the right idea!

I just washed my hair with just the vinegar and I dont know it wasnt itchy when I got out (only about 20 minutes ago) but I think it is starting to now could be because I am thinking about it. Will wait and see this arvo how I am going. I think if it does work I will have to do the vinegar thing everyday just so I dont go insane with the itchy. It smells really weird that my hair smells like vinegar at the moment. Will let you know later today how my hair is going thanks Jen

Freedom I am glad that you are getting to the end of it at 3 weeks. I cant imagine going 3 weeks but I will have to wait and see maybe once I have been raw longer the dermitites(sp?) will disapear who know's but we will give it our best shot.

Can we still colour our hair I know that is a lot of chemicals but I dont want to go gray just yet.

Raw could well stop your hair going grey Angie.  Mine has gone darker and I've been raw for 4 months tomorrow.  (I'm 50.)  Dr Anne Wigmore had very dark hair at age 70 or 80!!!

Baking soda (mixed with water) strips out oil too very well in the shower... but I don't know if using that would be against the no shampoo thing. You could try also shaking some in dry and combing it out. That way it removes some of the grease, but doesn't stress the scalp into producing more oil.

I read in the 'olden days' they also used to put a piece of silk on their brush, spritz with flower water, and brush. The oils from the hair were transferred out onto the brush.

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: Pinky on Wednesday 30 May, 2007
Okay thanks for that May but question How can your hair go darker considering its dead do you mean near your scalp are going darker sorry just asking just find it very strange but that could be me thinking in the way that society want us all to think (well the hair dye companies anyway)

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: Savvy Womyn on Wednesday 30 May, 2007
I have a bristly brush. In the old days they were made from pig tusks or something. You know the ones? They would be great I reckon, for moving the oils from the scalp down to the ends of the hair.

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: FreedomB on Wednesday 30 May, 2007
I just use a normal brush bought from Priceline or somewhere like that and it is coated with the oils... I washed it last week but it has this greasy white coating again. I don't think I need any thing else, lol!

Hi Angie, regarding the greying hair... raw will not change grey hair back to being dark but it may prevent new hair from being grey when it grows through. Hair colour is determined by the presence of special cells in your skin called keratinocytes and my assumption is that raw food revitalises these cells, the same way as it does for all other cells in the body. As a result, they give the hair more colour. Not certain on that but I do have a bit of scientific knowledge in that area that tells me that might be what is happening.
Oh and it is quite likely that, even though it will get worse at first (a healing crisis) your dermatitis will improve without shampoo - shaampoo blocks the pores, dries the skin and prevents expression of natural oils. And raw will help too. My head was really itchy from about days 4-12 but I put up with it and the itchiness is gone now. I'm sure having the dermatitis is very annoying but just think - for the price of a few weeks of itchy scalp, you could be dermatitis free for the rest of your life!

Best wishes for all you greasy raw fooders out there!  :ohyeah:

Actually Freedom many people have had gray/white hair turn back to coloured. Ann Wigmore was completely white when she started raw with lots of wheatgrass and sprouts and her hair turned completely brown again. Neat eh?

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: VegiesMakeMeSmile on Wednesday 30 May, 2007
Here's the link to Dr Anne Wigmore's page where she talks of her hair colour returning.

http://www.creativehealthinstitute.us/wigmore.htm (http://www.creativehealthinstitute.us/wigmore.htm)

She speaks elsewhere on the site of some of her students asking for some of her hair to analyse to make sure it wasn't really chemically coloured, and of course she gave them some.  They say she never walked anywhere but always ran.

I wonder how long she'd have lived without having been caught in a fire when she was 83.

Angie, I was only greying at the temples and through my fringe anyway, so it wasn't through the length of my hair except in the odd few strands.  But I'm sure it has gone darker during my 4 months raw.  My hair isn't very long these days either.  It was down to the back of my knees when I was 11.

Love
May

:ohyeah:  It's really inspiring to see everyone going all natural with the hair.   I'd like to suggest something for people especially those that have itchy, oily or generally troublesome scalp or hair. Years ago I used nasturtium and rosemary for my hair.  The latter is commonly known to be good for the hair, but now I've just read that nasturtium is also highly recommended, fancy that!
Nasturtium is coming into season in Perth.  This is my method for using it.  If you have some in the garden, just take a handful of leaves and pound them up with a pestle and mortar, mix with a few tablespoons of water and then strain the green juice for use....
After showering and drying hair with a towel, but while the hair is still slightly damp, massage the juice into your hair and scalp.  You can leave it on till your next shower otherwise you can rinse off after a minute or two if you prefer.
The same applies when using rosemary, but with rosemary I find it's better to rinse off otherwise it leaves a kind of sticky substance on the hair.  I also i must stress that i didn't find it to be nearly so effective as nasturtium.  I find nasturtium much better for the hair and scalp and i would also recommend it for the skin too.  In place of soap, adapt the method outlined above...

You can also make a larger batch to keep in the fridge, say about a cup of juice at a time, but it's much better used fresh and it only lasts a few days anyway.
Next time I will copy a recipe from this book i'm reading now that also uses nasturtium, but it's a bit more complicated to make...

Well I did the vinegar rinse as you know and today my head still isnt as itchy as it should or could be. I have been scratching a little bit but nothing like I thought it would be. Is there any problem with me doing the vinegar rinse every day or two just to get me through the itchy time. Would be really interested to know what you guys thought.

Hi precious Tulip,

I can't see any problem with it. My hair was just as greasy the next day as it was before I did the rinse. See how you go. Maybe do it every two days for a week or two and then leave it for a few days and see how long it takes to get itchy? Test and measure lovie!

Just had to tell you that I just washed my hair using the vinegar rinse (worked out that I use 1 cup to 1 litre so used 1.5ltr of water instead) and I have no hair falling out. I use to be able to get clumps of hair after I brushed it and there was about 3 strands that is so weird Im loving this new thing. Pete complains cause my hair is just everywhere so obviously now it wont be yippee  :yahh:

Panterka - I used to have a painfully ichy scalp and wouldnt be able to sleep if I hadn washed my hair every second day. I eventually found that by slowly edging the days between washing apart my hair began to cope and wouldnt get so itchy after the two, three and then four days between washes. I eventually realised that the more I washed it the faster it would get itchy! Now I manage to wash my hair, with shampoo only, about once every 1.5 weeks.

The hairties are a good idea, when I stopped washing my hair so often I got some pimples on the edge of my jaw coz of the extra oil on my face.

Funny thing about toilet paper.  When I first started using it I only ever used one square.  Reason being I just assumed that one square was a regular portion. (i.e. The "unit bias" phenomenon).  It wasn't until about ten years later that I found out most people use a lot more.  By that stage I was used to using one square and didn't see any need to change.

I have been following this post with interest as i have been trying for a couple of years now to lenghthen the time between washing my hair, which starts getting greasy after 2 days, and have got it down to two washes a week now, but after reading the posts here last week i thought i would try and see how long i could leave it for.  I lasted a week (thats with 2 rinses and an apple cider vinegar wash on day five).  I got home from work last night tho and could not bear to look at the grease ball that was attached to my scalp a minute longer and i caved.  It was so nice this morning to have clean hair again - but i think i will see if i can just shampoo/condition weekly for a while and see how that goes.  My biggest problem seems to be the grease.  Apple cider vinegar didnt seem to make any difference. Luckily i didnt seem to get any itch.

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: Panterka on Saturday 02 June, 2007
Hi all,

this is very inspiring and I think I may give it a try, and will see how I go. Thanks Kelly for your suggestions, I have 2 weeks or so off work and uni to prepare for exams, so now is a good time to try it, so I won't scare anyone or get fired for greasy hair!   rofl

One other idea I came up with today (totally raw) is washing your hair with an egg. When I was little, mum used to wash my hair with, I think it was the yolk, raw of course. It didn't make me cry and made my hair very soft. That was many years ago and I will make sure I ask mum to confirm how she did it, but from memory she used a couple of yolks (this would depend on the length of your hair) and rubbed them into my scalp and roots mostly (that's where the grease is anyway, not on the ends). Then washed off. No conditioners (they were simply not available where we lived at that time).

One word of warning though: the water must be lukewarm, not hot, otherwise the egg would cook and you will have bits of egg in your hair that are apparently very difficult to get out.

So I am going to try this and vinegar rinses and will see how I go.

whats toilet paper?
just kidding..

hair washed everyday in cold water will be prime in no time. i truly believe all the thrashed hair we see in western countries is due to all the gunk we 'wash' it in and the hot chlorine water.

the best hair ive seen on chicks is girls whom dont even know what pantene is.

Hee hee never thought i would say this but man, toilet paper is seriously unnatural...in thailand its not something you see much, only in really touristy areas..and if you use it you have to put it in the bin not flush it..and they have a hose that you wash yourself off with...so much better so much more natural and its like having a shower  after everytime you go to the loo...

As for shampoo its been 3 weeks now, just cold water showers and my hair is prime..growing so much and so healthy feels great...3 min showers...run my fingers through my hair just to flatten it down a little...this is  it
am ready..ohh yes i do occasionally remember to throw a couple of items of clothes on too..at the moment its bikini top and sexy fishermans pants...ohh these pants are too cool..Grant bought some too, ladies he looks seriously PHWOARR,hot hot!! quite luckily it is for him, that i have taken a step into the nunnery and and have thrown away the key for awhile so there is no getting out....lol.....
watching him run into the sea in his fisherman pants then run out,and the water had loosened them off....hee hee thought i would give you a little teaser ladies..and make Grant blush at the same time,,two birds with one stone...mwahh harr harrr,i am mischievious and loving it... :ohyeah:

Well I went to the brissy picnic yesterday and up went my hair in a pony and under a hat so as to not gross anyone out with my greasiness. When I got home I took off the hat and my goodness! The comb marks were still there from the morning! If that weren't enough, when I took off the hair tie my pony tail stayed there.

I should bottle my grease and sell it as hair styler. Harr harr harr

Freedom that is fantastic about your hair. How long has it been now?

Jen I still dont have a problem with the oilyness that is really weird that last time I used Shampoo was last Sunday.

Anyway an update on my hair I rinsed it with vinegar on Friday night (you all know cause I posted about no hair falling out) then on Saturday morning my hair was a little oily and itchy. So I was going to have a shower and rinse it again and of course couldnt cause of the kids Connor wanted mummy cuddles to sleep and then as soon as I finally got him of the the land of nod mum arrived to take me to the markets to get fresh fruit and vegies. So I didnt get a chance to wash my hair. It was only this monring when I finally rinsed it and after a little while of me scratching I stoped and didnt scratch for the rest of the day. So I am loving this and it is allready a week. I do find it better with my hair to use the vinegar and I will hopefully be able to stretch it out a little in a few days/weeks.

Hi Dani,

Thanks for the compliment! My hair grows very strongly forward. I've cut it short before but the stuff I need to use in it to keep it off my face just makes it annoying. I'm determined to see this through! A friend of mine today told me that it doesn't look as greasy at the front today! Yaaaaaaaaaaaay.

Hi Emi,
putting nasturtium thru a juicer is good especially if you are doing a bigger batch, the pestle and mortar I find easier for small amounts that's all.  Depends also on your juicer as well, but what you might try doing is juicing the nasturtium to get the desired amount of juice before you carry on juicing for whatever fruits and veggies you want (nasturtium is nutritious and good for digestive tract.
Another option is using water in a blender, especially for hard to grind items like bay leaf.  The blender is also ideal if you are doing a really big batch (for an all natural hair festival?  Sounds like a plan!)

Anyway, I gave my personal method last week but then promised to give an official herbal method which I don't think is as good but then I've never tried it.  Below is an extract from the book "Australian Weeds: A Source of Natural Food and Medicine" by Gai Stern, published by Harper and Row, and I quote:

  Nasturtium As A Cosmetic

Nasturtium is a good plant for the hair.  Its high sulfur content helps promote growth and tones the scalp.

Nasturtium Hair Lotion
Massage this lotion into the scalp frequently to help counteract hair loss.

125g (4oz/1 cup) Nasturtium leaves, flowers and seeds, chopped.
125g (4oz/1 cup) Nettle leaves, chopped.
500ml (1pint/2 cups) 90° alcohol
A few drops rosemary essence - or lavender essence if preferred

Place the chopped Nasturtium and Nettle in the alcohol and leave for 2 weeks.  Strain well, pressing down on the greens to extract as much juice as possible.  When cool, add rosemary (or lavender) essence and then pour into a labelled bottle.

End of Quote.
(I don't know what is meant by "90° alcohol" or "When cool".  If anyone has any clue, please explain )

Hey Angie that is really excellent about your hair, sounds like it's going really well. To start off with I wouldn't worry about the vinegar too much - definately better than shampoo! - but I agree that stretching out in the long run is a good idea. It has been 3 weeks and 3 days since I lasted washed my hair, so I'm actually really pleased it's going so well - I thought it would take longer!

even otters know there is plenty of raw fish in the sea..have any of you girlz met six pack seb?

Just to chime in with durianrider...I also find that cold showers are beneficial for skin, hair and health.  I'd go so far as to say that cold showers vs hot showers is comparable to rawfoods vs cooked foods in terms of it's effects I experience.  I hardly ever use hot water, even in winter, although it makes for quick showering sometimes!   It is so refreshing and revitalising :yahh:.  The only time i'd use hot water is when feeling particularly run-down and exhausted during winter time, in which case a cold shower could cause problems for your system.  During a heatwave in summer, repeated cold showers are the next best thing to going to the beach.

I start with a warm shower, and then (only in the mornings!) turn the hot off and blast my body with cold for a few seconds. It feels terrible, but awesome at the same time. Really wakes me up!

cold showers rock...just close your eyes and plunge..in out turn it all about and your done...less than 3 minutes no soap shampoo,nudda...just brisk water!

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: Michaela on Tuesday 05 June, 2007
I decided to take the plunge and have had cold showers for the last three mornings.  Once I get over the initial shock it isn't too bad and it's heavenly when I get out!  When I was having warm showers I used to drag it out to put off the moment when I'd turn the water off and start getting cold.  Now I look forward to turning the water off and getting warm!!!

I'm surprised at how well my hair comes up, too.  I used to have to use the vinegar rinse with warm water to keep the grease under control, but with cold water I don't seem to need it.  Seems a bit strange but I'm not complaining!!

Almost forgot ... after my cold shower I am WIIIIIIIIIDE awake and jumpin'!!

Well I havnt been washing my hair for 2 weeks on sunday and I havnt used the vinegar rinse since I think its been the sunday just gone. My hair isnt itchy at all and isnt oily. I just cant believe it. I do rinse my hair in water every few days but that is it. So hopefully my hair isnt going to do the oily thing or the itchy thing. Anyway I thought I would give you an update.

Angie - that's so cool that your hair is loving being natural! No itching is awesome!

Well, this morning I washed my hair with water, as I have been doing about every 4 days or so. This morning though, instead of it being slightly oily, it has gone like straw! Very dry...

Now I haven't had much oiliness at all, it has been fairly soft and seemed to be coping well.

I will keep brushing it often today to try and get the natural oils from my scalp down to the ends.

After spending most of this week in bed with temps at 39.8 my hair went very oily again. I think I must have been perspiring a lot from my head! Last night I put on another pillow case and this morning the oil was nearly gone. I've been wetting my hair daily. Maybe I shouldn't do that. I can't tell where it's at. Until that point I'd been changing my pillow case daily.

The other morning I was in my nice hot shower and I reached behind me to make it hotter. I got the wrong tap and made it freezing! Unexpected and not pleasant on my already aching bod! It was like every muscle in my body cramped simultaneously! eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

when im in cities in Thailand and india I get a layer of grime on my body, you know the kind - you rub your arm and suddenly all these black oily dirt particles appear. It seems like a hot shower helps it come off heaps better (I've probably only had 5 hot showers in the last 6 months, but have been mostly in warm climates anyway). How do people get grime off in cold water, do you have to scrub yourself raw with a brush or loofah? I have been maintaining my grime level by doing as much salt water swimming as i can which helps.

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: RawGreenGoddess on Friday 08 June, 2007
hey kel,i find jumping in the ocean and exfoliating with the sand is the best..its removes all the grime and dead skin cell build up as well, and your skin will be baby smooth...and you dont have to rub very hard either...and its great for getting oiliness out of the hair too...and you dont need styling product cos it just goes where you want with the salt water...its great!

Hi Kelly,
i'm not sure but i think green juices would help cleanse city grime off your skin, and perhaps also lemon juice might be good - sometimes after i use the juice in the kitchen i save the peel as a soap/scrub to utilise the last bit of juice on my skin, though it leaves a bit of a mess.  I must say though, I used to find urine was easily the best cleanser of them all, though you might want to shower outdoors if using it on a regular basis.  :-\

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?

I found I used shampoo less and less (over the space of a year or so) until I completely stopped using it. I had already stopped using soap for maybe 5 years prior. I guess my hair told me when it was ready for the full transition to no shampoo. Getting in the ocean regularly and wetting it in the shower was all I needed to keep it feeling clean. To me it was clean, but my wife wouldn't touch it...we have grown to have very different views on things. I can't bear the smell or taste in the air of the shampoo, creams, deodorant, perfume, etc she uses. Basically I find that if methods of hygiene aren't coming completely from nature, I don't like it.

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?

I love the brief indulgence of fragrance you get in the Australian bush...like the scent of eucalypt in the heat of the day.
And there is no doubt that raw vegans smell and taste better.
Not that I usually watch TV but tonight on the TV show "What's Good For You", where Harley was featured as the "extreme" vegan with low B12, they clearly stated that it's scientifically proven that vegans smell better as they don't have all the animal proteins and associated toxins coming out through the skin. (I'll have to watch it again...I taped it...if you want the exact statement they made).

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: FreedomB on Tuesday 12 June, 2007
Grant I think the exact statement was 'vegas are better to kiss' because they don't haveanimal protein and fat breakdown products in their mouth. Personally that would be enough to put me off meat forever but... I guess not everyone feels the same.

It will be 5 weeks this wednesday since I last used shampoo - since then it's just been water. And I am totally loving my hair now - it is soft, thick, shiny and lovely! My gorgeous kitty does insist on waking me up in the morning by licking my head, which gives me some very interesting hair styles () but other than that it is great, I'm never looking back! Oh and I've stopped using soap - I wash my body with organic natural body wash but my face gets a 'wash' with coconut or cacao butter every 2 days and that's it. This morning my mum said "your face looks lovely today" completely out of the blue - if that's not a testimonial, I don't know what is!

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: stmpyelephant on Tuesday 12 June, 2007
I'm gonna try to get in on this. I haven't washed my hair for nearly a week I believe so I'm all set.

I get itchy, oily hair too because I use shampoo and conditioner that are basically made from just natural oils, I wash it less frequently and don't straighten it anymore. I chopped most of my hair off in April to get rid of the bleach that had grown out so it is very soft/natural right now.

Tried to do a conditioner wash only once, but I lasted around two weeks because it was always itchy. Now that I'm on holidays I'm willing to try a water wash...I have heard these kind of things work differently depending on if you have 'hard' water or something...whatever that is.

Going to love wearing a hat for the next six weeks haha. Hope I don't crack.

Haha, ta. Reading the thread- you seem to have similar issues as me re: not hair washing, so I am definetly watching your progression as an indicator and wishing you the best of luck!!! Seriously, takes some willpower and it's awesome you don't have major itchiness.

durianrider- i hear some cold is good! I am sure the Cambodians have it right! I think you could get a job on a very selective, special bus service haha. The raw bus, au naturale.

Washed my hair tonight with water, was a tad itchy afterwards but now it is fine.

Oh wow thanks for that article. I read it and was really happy to see the bit about the waxy coating. My hair does indeed feel waxy at the moment and I've been getting white stuff in my hairbrush like oil coating it after I've brushed it. It's nice to know that this is normal. I hadn't thought about it too much though, I just worried that it could be seen in my hair. With my dark hair I thought that having white stuff through it would make me look like a lamington! Well I'd be close to week 4 now... I haven't been terribly oily (but I've washed my hair twice with egg yolk & did the viengar rinse once), however my scalp is shocking.... Dandruff Central, no less... :uhuh: I am back at work too, lol. Hairband time for me!

Anyway, although my scalp isn't terribly itchy as I expected, it is very dry. I also noticed that my nose is getting very dry lately, and I believe this is related to raw foods, because I didn't have such a problem before, not even when I was on Roaccutane (skin medication). I am eating plenty of raw fats, but don't drink as much as probably should be. Anyway, I was wondering if dandruff was experienced by anyone else at this stage?

I am not giving in to shampoo just yet though :D

Perhaps brushing really well through the day would help stimulate the scalp... Just a thought, don't know if it would work or not...

Hi Panterka, week four for me also today! Yaaaaaaaaaay!!! My hair is getting better slowly. I've noticed in the last few days that I've had wispy bits coming loose from my ponytail. I've noticed that my hair is more oily when I 'wash' it. Just doing the shampooing action under the shower. I've started doing this every three days instead of every day and it's made a difference. I haven't had any dandruff but one of my girlfriends has. She isn't too worried about it as she is blond and it's really hard to see. If I had dandruff I would probably look like a lamington!!!  rofl I don't know what to suggest other than massaging the scalp relly well. Let us know how you go ok?

Congratulations everyone on the no shampoo! Great work.  :ohyeah:
In terms of the dry scalp Panterka, I agree with others that rubbing your scalp really well is important other than that just give it time. I actually had loads of dandruff before but it's gone now so I'm not experienced there!
Try using some coconut oil on your nose to soften the skin a bit.

Oh my hair is going great by the way! Yay!  :yahh:

Thanks everyone, I've started brushing more... Although I have long hair, I generally very rarely brushed it (it just didn't get tangled). I will see how I go, I think my dandruff is a side effect of dermatitis, because it only happens in certain areas.

Freedom, I think your hair's before and after's are in order :)) To show us that there is light (and beutiful non-oily hair) at the end of the tunnel...

Freedom rocks... :yahh:

well i believe its coming into my sixth week of no shampoo body wash ect ect....nice cool to  cold quick showers....no goop...hair feels amazing...growing like a weed...the curls are kicking in..thought do i cut it?and then i thought nope just gonna see what happens with it as it grows...

just towel dry it and run my fingers through it,no brush no comb...will see as it gets longer but i dont want to use a comb or anything...too funny i have a blow dryer and ghd straightners with absolutely no desire to use them...what a waste of time....for me anyway...others may be different and thats great,be boring if we are the same, lol!

its funny my hair has natural lighter streaks(blonde ones) from the sun....and its not color...cos that was taken out before Thailand and then it was cut off in Thailand..so its my real hair color its very cool....dont remember a time when i had natural hair...mmm perhaps when i was 12 and then i started messing around with bleaches ect....

I couldn't stand the smell. I went "Ugh... What am I doing?" and scrubbed and scrubbed to get it off! It stinks!

My hair is still giving me despair. It feels waxy. As though it has had gel in it that's been brushed through. It is improving though. It's even been wispy at the front! How exiting.

I got my hair dyed yesterday, and I woke up this morning with the taste of it in my mouth... Definitely the last time to get it done. I am with you from now on Suay, completely natural.

I was doing well with the no-washing, but had some interesting regrowth. I got it dyed as close to my natural hair colour as I could.

Ok well, my dandruff has decreased, however I get attacks of itchiness... am wondering if dandruff is the body shedding old useless skin cells??

My hair was looking rather oily and as I was having a shower I was casting glances at the shampoo bottle and wondering if all-natural 100% organic and plant-derived shampoo actually counts as shampoo lol. Anyway, as I am going away for 10 days this week, and will be staying on a boat with very agricultural shower, I figured I will wait until I come back and then if the hair and scalp is not improving I might use the shampoo if I really feel the need to.

Washing it with water does seem to help a bit. I haven't used ANYTHING but water (i.e. no vinegar, etc) for at least 3 weeks, and my hair is not as shocking as I would've expected it to be...

Jen, how is your hair going?? Are you out of the hat yet? :)

My hair is almost as bad as it was in the beginning! I don't know if it's because I wore a beanie for two nights and three days or because I ate some greasy chips yesterday but it's a huge backstep of about two weeks. It's like it was at it's worst. Very frustrated. Feel like it's as bad as it ever was. I'm going to wash it tomorrow. I'm out guys!

Oh you two are just so beautiful. The people on this forum never fail to amaze me with their generosity of heart and desire to help others back up when they are down. I did end up washing my hair today and it feels wonderful! I just wasn't ready enough with my confidence levels to have greasy hair and no cosmetic enhancement. This will come with time and I don't regret this experiment at all.

I won't be washing my hair every day like I was and I'll be investing in a better quality shampoo and  conditioner that's for sure. But today I'll run my fingers through my hair with no feeling of 'oh I'm dirty' or the other thoughts and enjoy it! I play with my hair a lot and have been at a loss as to what to do instead.

A goal to work towards. I really admire everyone who is doing this and in no way am I looking down on myself for washing my hair.

Thanks so much for all of your support.

Awesome Jen to see you living & learning as you hone in on your true path.

It was a long, slow experimental experience before I genuinely didn't want to use shampoo at all.
I now think that "better quality shampoo" goes in the same trash bucket as better quality cooked food.
My last bottle of "quality shampoo" lasted me over a year, and thankfully I've never had an inkling to replace it.
During my transition to no shampoo, my hair went greasy and from swimming in chlorine pools for up to 10 hours a week (glad I don't do that anymore!) I had all this white grime that stuck to my hair brush, which I'd be brushing back into my hair all the time...gross!
But now my hair feels just perfect like everything else 811rv. Ahhh....life is good  :ohyeah:

Grant!!! *pounce* How are you? Long time no see... I've MISSED you! (((((((((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))

I had that grime on my brush too. Just washed it off. I read about it in the thread that someone posted here.

I don't regret washing my hair at all. So nice to run my fingers through it. I know I will stop washing my hair with shampoo for good one day. I'm just not ready yet.

Good to 'see' you Grant/Ganyow!

Yeah, missed you too Jen. Thanks for the pounce :) Luckily I caught you!
I was in Brisbane last weekend but it was such a rushed trip...no time to catch up and play :(   ...I'm not sad really :->

Regarding shampoo, It's liberating knowing that you will be ready. And life should always be lived with no regrets. We are all are entitled to as many mistakes as it takes to learn how to get onto our true path where the magic is boundless.

Oh, I found out that the name Ganyow is actually Kanyao.
Kan means peduncle (which means stalk). Yao means long.
It's a variety of durian (delicious of course) which has a longer stalk than the others.
Long stalk...seems to describe my talk lanky self quite well.
No wonder the Thai people laugh so much when I tell them that's my name :)

how's yours going now Jen?are you finding its getting less greasy this time around?

i'm loving not shampooing mine, gosh it must be 6 weeks now...its so easy..and quick..am going to have a trim tomorrow..i though i would grow it,but i love having it short and pixish..and its so easy.esp with all the ocean swimming im going to be doing in the near future....

I think some people also use a blend with tea tree oil instead of shampoo.
I haven't tried it. But I'll bet it's a better option than shampoo.

Suay, I think short and pixish looks mighty fine on you and you'll certainly feel freer in the ocean.
Oh, I'm craving the ocean...haven't been in for weeks.

Jen - My hair is fine. I haven't had much trouble at all, but I was only washing weekly for about 2 years now and when I did wash it was with 'natural' shampoo.

I scrub my scalp when I wash. I brush it with a brissly brush twice a day, sometimes more. I rinse with a vinegar and sandlewood oil mix about once a week, mainly because I love the smell of sandlewood. I normally have dry hair, which can go a bit like straw - hence only ever washing once a week before. So I am loving a bit of oil in my hair.

Title: Re: All Natural Hair?
Post by: Jenergy on Thursday 28 June, 2007
That's so great guys. Emi I love the idea of a sandal wood rinse. Isn't it one of the best smells in the world?

I washed my hair once and haven't had to do it again. I might tomorrow though as it was looking a little greasy by the end of today and with my cook-a-thon for my SAD family tonight it's sure to be greasy tomorrow. I'd forgotten how much things spatter!

This is great because I used to have to worry about washing it everyday. When I worked (before kiddies)I missed washing my hair one morning because I was late and got pulled up by a supervisor for it! And I didn't blame her either. It looked awful. Really oily. eeeeeeeeeeewwwww!!! But it's light and silky now. I'm looking forward to experimenting again one day.

Shampoo recipe for dry hair:

Heat 30ml coconut oil in a bowl over hot water. Take off the heat and stir in 3 drops of orange essential oil and 1 drop of rose oil. Put in a jar and seal (to let it harden up a little)

Apply small amounts and comb through. Leave for five minutes and then rinse off as normal.

(from Recipes for Natural Beauty)

Shampoo for oily hair:

Blend together 4 strawberries, 60ml of rose water, 2 drops of lavender oil, 2 drops of geranium oil. Really rub into the hair and leave for 5 mins. Rinse well to remove the seeds! lol

Aaawww thanks FreedomB, I dont like shampoo, makes me get very itchy scalp and dry flakes from lack of natural oils, I do however use conditioner because my hair is so long and think, other wise I cannot brush it. I have yet to try a natural conditioner. I also use cocoa butter, massaged in from roots to ends and also olive oil towel wraps.

I used to wash my hair every day, now I wash it everyother day. I know it's not good for my hair, but if I go more than 3 days, it gets greasy. I saw an artice in a magazine similar to the link you posted Dani, and their hair looked great after six weeks of no shampooing, but I think it's so strange that it doesn't look greasy

I am going to try washing my hair in camomile tea with bi-carb soda

1 &1/2 cups water for 4 tea bags
1tbs bi-carb

massage in and leave in for a few min, rinse with some apple cider vinegar diluted in water.

Condition: Olive oil with rosemary oil applied to roots and ends, massaged...warm in warm towel for 15 min, rinse.

Also, a dry shampoo for those of you interested: cornflour sprinkled in your hair and leaft for a minute or two then brushed out, leave it oil free and shiny

Ok Ladies, I just made this exquisite recipe and used it on my own hair...it feels like SILK...PURE SILK I tell you!!
My hair is to my bottom and very thick and curly, it took to this raw natural treatment with enthusiasm and drank it all in...

The scrub: Bi-carb soda...for me I used 2Tbs because I have thick long hair...

I soaked 4 chamomile teabags in warm water..(Hot enough, but not enough to burn your finger) and then added 4tbs apple cider vinegar (This is the rinse...after the scrub)

Then I grabbed some rosemary and lavendar form the garden and bruised it between my fingers to release the oils and soaked it in some warm  water with some olive oil...(I used tbs olive oil for my hair)...this is the conditioner.
Leave it soaking whilst you wash your hair

Wet hair in cold water and add enough water to the soda to make a paste, massage through hair and on scalp...rinse with cold water.

Add the rinse and massage through....rinse with warm water

Strain and squeeze every last drop out of the rosemary and lavendar...mix and Add the conditioner to your head and massage well through...leave in for a few minutes and rinse...or keep it in...the residue of oils left in the cup made an excellent moisteriser that I applied to my face and massaged in.

heres what my hair looked like and me with no make up after I had massaged my face with the oil residue...( I stained my lips with blueberry from a fresh berry!)

Let me know if you use it and what you think...it is heavenly and smells devine!!..byt he way I didnt use and hairspray or mousse...YAYAYAYAYAYAY...Berry A La Natural!!!

Love BerryBliss

Your hair looks AMAZING!!! so beautiful and healthy!
I was on my way to having poo free hair ;) until i had a massage the other day and it included a head massage so i really had to wash the oil out as it was dripping down my face!
Im thinking i might try to start it again today...might give your hair potions a go berrybliss :)

Well I havnt been in here for quite a while had a few dramas.

So I have just past 5 weeks on Sunday and my hair feels yuck still. Like Jen said a few pages back (yes I have just read 6 pages worth that is how much i have missed) that it feels like wax on your hair and yes that is what my hair feels like and it is as itchy as itchy. I am really not enjoying this stage. It hasnt really been oily maybe a bit but nothing like I expected it to be.

So I am still determined to keep going to see if it will clear up maybe I need the 8 weeks I dont know.

Good on you Jen you did a fantastic job lasting as long as you did.

And BerryBliss you have the hair that I have always wanted but I will have to live with what I have cause I am not curling it anymore (did it about 20 times when I was a kid) and I will have to try you recipe out.

Hope everyone is having a great day and love to you all

Thanks rawsensation...it doesnt take as long as it seems...you should give it ago!...I was going to suggest that is oyur hair was still oily to rub sprinkle some cornflour in it and then comb it through,,,helps a lot without using harsh shampoo!
About the make up...yes my skin feels great without it, and you do feel a lot more free as it is your own beauty shining through not a cover up!

Alegne...I would say fresh lavender would be best as it is full of oils and juice!...but dried will add some traces of oits too...give it a go and post a picture!
I am the only one in the family with curls, my sisters have straight hair...we have different fathers, I guess I have my dads indonesian side!...but what I wouldnt give for straight hair.

I used to use (when I had hair like yours BB - up until a month or so ago) this stuff as well as using the natural treatments you have discussed and photographed:

http://www.morroccomethod.com/ (http://www.morroccomethod.com/)

It is raw (apparently - the ingredients certainly look, smell and feel raw!), organic and vegan.

I only ever washed my hair about once every 10-14 days...this began when I was young and with thick wavy hair long enough to sit on it was too much hassle to wash it any more frequently! And I simply never needed to wash it more often than that. When I switched to making my own (I'm a kitchen witch like you Berry Bliss) I did it even less because of waiting to be inspired to create something from the garden for my hair!

I honestly do think that different hair textures, colours and types need different treatments - what works for one certainly doesn't work for all.

Well I have been going for 7 weeks last Sunday not washing my hair and it is finally getting really nice and smooth and shiny. I cant believe the difference. I have been the last few days taking my hair brush into the shower with me when I wash my hair and brushing all the crap out of it and I think it has really improved cause I have done that. 7 week it doesnt seem that long at all I am so happy and I would have save myself so much money not using shampoo and conditioner.

How is everyone else going

That's fabulous for you Angie, so great that your hair is nice and the extra money is a bonus too! Yeah, time flies doesn't it. I remember I stopped washing my hair on the 9th but can't remember which month, lol!  rofl But I think I must be up to about 2 months now. I still get lots of rubbish in my brush too, might try your trick of taking it in the shower. Mum just cut the ends off for me and my hair is MUCH happier and nicer now, very pretty - I had a bit of a disaster with a new shampoo brand at the beginning of the year (what motivated the no-shampoo) and it pretty much killed my hair (mum calls it the apocalyspe, lol!) and I had a bit left at the ends that was still dead - now it is all thick and lovely again!
Good luck to everyone going shampoo-free!

I have been going for about six and a half weeks now and am loving it. My hair is shoulder had been fine and drab for a long time due to chemicals on the outside and loss of minerals on the inside (back and forth between raw and not raw at the time). It had also been breaking off as it was so weak.

Now it is getting its body back and its natural curls are starting to form again. Once the 100% raw sets in too and really nourishes from inside, I will be flying. Otherwise, very happy so far with the result.

I read by Leonard Orr that is very good to shave ones hair at least once every ten years because it helps in the cleansing of the aura.
I love to do it one day when I get the courage I wanted to used the Cancer day as an excuse to shave my hair.
I read that there is a feeling of freedom.
It has taken me a lot of courage to have let my hair going grey and not colouring it anymore.
It is funny how the hairdressers try that you put some colour on it. I went to thie hairdressing school to cut again my hair. And now I have only a few tips with a little of colour and the hairdresser ask me if I didn·t mind going out with my grey hair?
I said no that I wanted to go natural. And I said perhaps I will try Henna next time.
And she said "When you come next time we can do the Henna for you as it is very messy"

No I want to get used to my grey hair for a longer time and one day I will shave it.

Yay for going all natural Patricia. I think that is fabulous that you are letting your own energy free. Wow - shaving it - I don't know that I will ever do that, but you never know. I do admire those that do. And how wonderful and cool that would be for summer.

I have been shampoo and conditioner free for a couple of weeks now... I brush my hair thoroughly every night with my Mason Pearson brush (rolls royce of brushes but not vegan I'm afraid) as I have long hair and want longer and it beautifully distributes natural oils... rinse in morning and then finger comb through organic leave in conditioner and let dry naturally. my hair was very damaged from perms and is repairing slowly but definite improvement has been noticed. I also sleep with a nightcap, occasionally rub in jojoba oil and trim every four weeks or so. I want waist length hair again so it needs lots of TLC!!!

Princess that is fantastic that your hair is doing so well. I wish mine was. I am still having problems with stuff coming out in my brush and it is really oily today again. I am really over it I just keep leaving my hair up so no body can see it cause it just look yucky unless it is the day I washed it (I dont have time to have a shower in the morning at the moment and wash my hair I wish I envy you PB)

Anyway Hopefully it wont be long till it is all better.
Love to you all
Angie

Hi all,

I haven't been on the site for a while... uni started again, which together with work and family keeps me oh so busy. Am very proud to announce that5 I hadn't washed my hair since I started... God knows how long its been... Over 6 weeks, that's for sure. Probably getting close to 3 months. I took up advice to brush my hair in the shower and it has really done wonders - for one I don't feel the need for a conditioner because my hair isn't tangled and it seems to wash better too.

On the negative side, I still get dandtuff in my "problem" spot, where I have dermititis. I figure it will go away eventually and try not to scratch it if it gets itchy, which doesn't happen very often these days, thankfully. I can't say that I have noticed a tremendous difference between shampoo and no shampoo... Other than the fact that I have to remind myself that I don't need to be looking at the shampoo shelves of Priceline... Lol.

I have not had any more vinegar rinses since I started, so my hair has adapted naturally... I don't think I am at the end of the road just yet, but it certainly hasn't been as horrible as I thought it would be. I just told myself that shampoo was not an option - that made it easy!

Panterka it takes a while I am now on 10 weeks and it is still not where I want it to be I am about to give up and wash it with shampoo. It would be okay if I washed it like every 2 days but I dont get to have a shower until the night time and its too late to have wet hair.

You are doing great and yes the tip with the brush in the shower is fantastic I dont know what made me think of it but something did.

Anyway keep up the good work
Angie

Angie,

Have you tried natural shampoos like the egg-yolk method I've posted here? There have been a few other methods mentioned... or even cornflour as a dry-shampoo method? (It soaks up the 'grease')

There is a number of 'all natural' beauty product lines such as natural instinct which contani no animal products

This is new to me , I have never heard of not using shampoo to wash hair . But I will have to give it a try and see what happens . I have heard that when a person goes 100% raw , that their gray hair turns back to their  natural hair color again.....has this happened to anyone here ?. And how long do you have to be 100% raw before it changes back  ?.
