Title: Coconuts Post by: Fiona on Thursday 18 August, 2005 :bounce: What is the difference in nutritional value of Green vs "old" brown coconuts?
Where is a good supplier (in Australia) of the green ones , if they are the preferrred `option`? Title: Coconuts Post by: Dmetri on Friday 19 August, 2005 Ay Fiona, the green ones are not only tastier but the white pulp is also easier to digest. It is sometimes gel like depending on when it has been picked. If you live in the tropics, pick them yourself as the council only denuts them and in some places they end up at the dump.
Australia imports them from a few different countries; just have to laugh at this absurdity or life can get silly :faint: The green ones are sold at Asian supermarkets and i think they all come from Thailand. Have heard people say that they may be irradiated, well if they have been sitting for a long time they go mouldy, especially on the base. So I feel they are not irradiated. Coles and Woolworths from time to time sell them too. It is up to the individual whether they wish to support these companies though. Although I do not know what nutritionly they consist of, I find that my body loves them, especially the green ones although I have juiced the pulp of the brown ones and had it with fruit and it was very, very nice. A bit off the subject but-Keifer seems to love the coconut juice, so it is a great alternative to dairy or soy. I have been using coconut juice and freshly prepared almond milk for some time with the keifer and it loved it. Recently I was getting to many rotten ones (brown nuts as the green are not always available, never had a rotten green one) so I just left the cocnut juice out and the keifer didn't appreiciate it, so I added some honey: it works but not as well and tastes not as good. Oh and I am no longer in the tropics, thats why I buy them. I learnt how to climb the trees in Indonesia and benifited immensley back in Nth Qld as many people have them growing in their yards not knowing what to do with them. They often pay people to take the nuts off, disposing of them. It's a funny old life we have created  :P Peace :P Dmetri Title: Coconuts Post by: durianrider on Monday 22 August, 2005 im in port douglas and have just finished an absolute feast of 6 coconuts shredded with dulse, rocket, cucumber and cherry tomatoes.
the water is fizzy and extremely similar to lemonade. infact if you squeezed a lemonade fruit into the fizzy nut juice you would have the original lemonade. just like akee is the original cheddar cheese, durian the fondue and noni fruit the blue vein. anyone coming to north queensland , drop into port on a sunday at the market. talk to adrian and judith under the cork tree. they have a raw family and adrian is the most knowledgable person on coconuts i have ever met. not to mention the essene gospel texts! thanks again crew!!!!!!!!!! :corn: |
