Title: Greek Raw Foodists
Post by: Alegne on Friday 19 August, 2005
HI EVERYONE

I WAS JUST WONDERING ARE THERE ANY PEOPLE OF GREEK BACKGROUND WHO ARE RAW FOODISTS ?

I TELL YOU THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ANCIENT GREEK DIET AND THE MODERN GREEK DIET IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY! IT SADENS ME. I HOPE WHEN I LEARN MORE ABOUT RAW FOODISM MYSELF ( BECAUSE I HAVE JUST STARTED MY JOURNEY) THAT I CAN GET OVER THERE AND OPEN UP THESE PEOPLES MINDS IF NOBODY HAS DONE SO ALREADY!

THE BIGGEST ANICIENT BRAINS FOR EXAMPLE HIPPOCRATES AND PYTHAGORAS WERE RAW FOOD EATERS.

AFTER MANY YEARS OF EATING SEMI VEG AND WITH FOOD COMBINING WAYS I HAVE JUST STARTED EATING RAW.

BEING OF A GREEK CULTURAL BACKGROUND AND THE GREEK CULTURE VERY MUCH LINKS ITS CULTURE TO FOOD IE COOKED FOOD THATS WHY I AM LOOKING OUT FOR GREEKS TO SHARE ANY CULTURAL CONFLICTS .

I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING ON THE NET FOR ANY GROUPS BUT HAVEN'T HAD ANY LUCK.

IF ANYBODY IS OF GREEK DECENT OR KNOWS OF ANY GREEKS EVERN IF THEY ARE JUST VEGETARIAN IF WOULD BE FANTASTIC TO LET ME KNOW!

THANKS FOLKS TAKE CARE

ALEGNE
:)
AS WE SAY IN GREEK MANY MANY KISSES "FILAKIA" TO ALL  ;)  !!!!!!!!!!

Hello Alegne. Although this post is very old, I write to you cause I just found this site. I dont live in Australia, I am greek, and I am about to begin raw nutrition.... I am at the stage of learning and studying  -_-.

In Greece, raw nutrition is not spread yet.... not even veganism is well known. The only site that exists is "www.omofagia.com". The lady that owns is, gives lectures, private of public, about this matter and I am going to attend one, next weekend. I am really interested in going raw.

Alegne and every Greek, especially if you are new ones like me, I am at your disposal to share thoughts and experiences on that matter.

Filakia  ^_^

Item of interest?? :

My brother has just returned to Greece after visiting us for 3 weeks.  We hadn't seen him in 15 years.  Though we're anglo-saxons, he converted to Greek Orthodoxy and is a monk on Mount Athos Greece.
Though the monks there do eat fish, my brother Peter doesn't eat any foods of animal origin.
After 15 years of eating Greek food - he's really 'into' homous (? spelling), tomatoes, olives, lentils, other legumes and...... salt.
He said though that the monks have wild grasses growing there which they enjoy eating at certain times of the year.  Longevity is common there.

Alegne do you ever go to Greece? I ask because apparently the raw food following there is HUGE!! If you ever check it out please let us know. Greece has been one of my favourite trips ever. I hope to go back again in the next few years. It's a magical place. I love the white buildings against the blue blue sea. WOW! And the black sand beaches, and the mythology. Magic.

Hi Sheryl

Yes it is nice! Its loverly I must say I am proud of my heritage.
I didntn't know raw in Greece was that big. I have found 2 girls that have their own websites over there one I bought her book www.therawgreek.com  ( thats Gina Brit /Grk I have her book ) and  www.omofagia.com ( Flora native athenian greek) .
If you have any other websites contacts let me know.
Also have you come across any other Ozzy/Greek raw foodists let me know too.

I wanted to go this summer ie our winter ( but cant get away from work) :( the village where my folks come from is sooo healthy pine trees everywhere no pollution  and there water from the spring it was the best cold like it was in the fridge. They are from the Peloponese past Corinth ( go you past that huge cannel that seperates) to get there.

Apparently I heard on the greek islands  the locals have to keep everything pristeen white and blue its law by the local councils.

Wsh I could just drop everything and get away over there evern for a weekend....
Aw well such is life.

I must start teaching you some el greko if and when you guys visit again    ( i am fluent is reading and writing)

Filakia= Kisses in greek  ^_^

have never heard about many raw greek folk in Greek and havent been yet there but know that Mediterrean people and landscape are generally beautiful, warm and genuine... so go for it when you can...
the traditional cuisine there is so simple and yummy and as raw-foodie in Greek you are like a King in France! Plenty of open markets with fresh fruits and vegetables (you will enjoy the best water and rockmelons there)...
The egean sea is very idyllic and crystal light-blue and the many islands are a retreat for your soul... i guess you will never forget Greek once you have been there...

Contact Balta of the Spain raw-community in Malaga to ask for some greek-raw-foodie, he may know someone there:

Hi,
Gina Panayi here, The Raw Greek herself.  I just stumbled across this discussion group while searching for something else, and having read all the mentions of me i thought i should say hello.
Hello.
I just wanted to also say that raw food isn't really as huge here in Greece as i would have hoped, but there is a small community mostly in Athens but also a few rawfoodies scattered about the country.  There is hope for Greece after all.
There have been a few Greek raw websites springing up over the past few month here are a couple that i know of:
www.rawgreece.com
www.bodytemple.gr
Anyway if anyone has any Q's about Greece give me a shout.
Lots of live
Gina
