Title: Weed smoothies! Post by: ~Kelly~ on Thursday 15 November, 2007 Inspired by Sergei's lecture I am currently devouring a smoothie made of...
50g grass (almost a whole bowl full!) small handfull of mustard leaves, marshmallow leaves and nettle leaves 3 tomatos 3 sticks of celery 1 lemon 1 cup water It is thick so I do have to chew a fair bit, but tastes nice and cooling (good for this hot day). If anyone else is experimenting with edible weed smoothies, I'd love to hear about what does and doesnt work for you. xoxoxo Title: Re: Weed smoothies! Title: Free smoothies.. Post by: roarphood on Friday 16 November, 2007 Today Kelly and I made a smoothie of almost all free ingredients,
We gleaned mini-mandarine like fruit, and some dock, plantain and mustard leaves on the way home from taking my niece to school this morning. the recipe was; 1/2 - 1kg mini mandi's large bunch of dock leaves a few dates to taste. It didnt turn out as the most delicious smoothie ever, but plenty nutritious and filling. Spending money on food has been stressing me out a bit lately, Sergei's talk was perfectly timed, i'm all inspired to get gleaning again.. bring on fig season! :yahh: Title: Re: Weed smoothies! Post by: organic mama on Friday 16 November, 2007 Since Sergei talk we have been having grass, dandelion plants and clover ever second day. i'm not sure enough of some of the other weeds out there to use them. googling them and looking at pictures is not the same as going out to pick them.
The first morning we had our weed smoothie my 7 year old Daniel took hours to drink it and then out of the blue he said "I just want to be normal" when i asked him what normal was he replied "well none of my friends at school drink weeds" LOL...it was priceless Kelly I've never had a savoury smoothie. It just doesn't appeal. is it an aquired taste. Wow Roarphood...imagine if we could all eat free at least once a day. you could save a bit of money over a year. Whats Dock? Peta Title: Re: Weed smoothies! Post by: ~Kelly~ on Saturday 17 November, 2007 This morning I made a pesto with basil from my garden, lemons from my friends garden, gleaned wild mustard leaves and walnuts - yum!
Peta - here is a picture of the curled dock which is the one we have close by, it is Rumex sp. and aparently you can eat all of the Rumex's. I did alot of Plant ID at TAFE a few years ago and its finally coming to good use!!! Post by: jackson on Saturday 17 November, 2007 Hey Kelly, I went along to Sergei's talk last Sunday night at Byron Bay and am really inspired to become more knowledgable about edible weeds.
Not a weed, but something that Sergei talked about was strawberry leaves. Now, we have oodles of strawberry plants looking very pretty with all their green foliage...but very few fruits, so I have been getting stuck into eating the leaves. I have been in our backyard studying the yellow flowers which I thought were all dandelions but have discovered that the only ones that are dandelions are the plants growing close to the house that are covered with flaky lead paint peeling off the house - bugger. I'm not sure if the other ones that look similar to dandelions are edible. And our small front yard is covered in clover but it is also where we park our cars - double bugger! Oh well, we will be moving house in the next week or two, so I will have the excitement of discovering all of the weeds there. I liked what Sergei did - he told us that he got seeds of the weeds that he wanted but didn't grow in his area and he stood in his backyard and tossed them into the air letting them land wherever, then just let them do their thing and he had a wonderful mass of green edibles to harvest that didn't need any watering or maintenance! I would love to get some stinging nettles growing - we used to have a mass of them in our backyard when we lived in SA and I used to pick them and make nettle soup (in my pre-raw days). xx Title: Re: Weed smoothies! Post by: ~Kelly~ on Thursday 22 November, 2007 Hey Jackson, yeah I want to try some strawberry leaves. I went to the market the otherday and got some real fresh little strawbs with their few green leaves at the top attached. I dont normally eat those bits of green with the strawberries but I did this time and was surprised that I liked it!
