Title: The best deodorant lemon...
Post by: rawconnection on Thursday 15 November, 2007
Got a wonderful tip from my naturopath when i started getting tiny lumps under my arms months before raw and he said it was blocked ducts from my pregancy and forgot what else. He said to cut lemon in half put it in the warm water let some juice come out and rub it under the arms whilst in the bath or shower.
This unclogs the pores as some deodorants block it and causes those nasty little lumps. I did it and within a week the lumps were gone but i noticed i didnt need to wear deodorant either as it got rid of the smelly sweaty summer underarm stink. Excellent for pubic areas where it sweats. Good for guys itchy jocks lol.

It may sting a little if you have shaved but its well worth it. Geez nature has really left us everything.  :yahh:

Yes its best that way for me. I rub half a lemon under the arm and squeeze the juice. Pretty messy so best to do in the bath or shower then rinse of out you get and wella. Hmm wheres the smell and sweat hehe gone.

MY hubby used it on his underarm ulcers and they went away.

Yes hehe. Im surprised you dont already have lemons :P

I miss my old lemon tree but then we moved. i remember the big huge tic looking things and couldnt grab any. But the tree got cut down by the new owners.

Im so peeved when people cut down fruit trees to make room for rubbish. Fruit trees are excellent for pollution better then gum trees.

everytime i buy a house i fill the gardens with fruit trees and i haven't stayed any longer than 8 years yet so just as i'm getting to reap big benefits i move on, but i guess the next owners get the great years and i have found all who have bought off me that it was one of the factors in their buying the house.

Alot of people have fruit trees in my suburb. My neighbour down the road has an orange tree and it sits over the fence. yet i still go buy my oranges hehe.

My neighbours mango tree hangs over our fence and we are on the afternoon sun side of the tree. Guess who just got a whole tray of super large mangoes for free! Yee har. We did offer some back to the neighbors but they weren't interested. Ok!

You can't have enough fruit trees( especially when man is cutting down the rainforests for animal fodder).

I have recently been using your suggestion of lemon juice as deodorant and it has been excellent.

I must admit, when I first read your post back in November I was highly sceptical.

I tend to sweat a lot and get whiffy really easily, so I didn’t think this method would be suitable for me.

Anyway I decided to give it a go because I had developed a nasty on-going rash from my deodorant.

These are the steps I took every morning:

Squeezed all the juice from one small lemon.

In the shower, I washed away any traces of sweat and dirt under my arms with my normal soap. I use natural, plain, unscented, goatsmilk soap because it is extremely gentle on my sensitive skin.

After rinsing off the soap, I then used half the lemon juice and rubbed it under my armpits before washing it off.

Once I was out of the shower and dry, I would soak cotton pads in the remaining lemon juice and wipe them under my arms. Sometimes I just splashed it on but this was a bit messy.

Just waited for the juice to dry and then got dressed as normal.

Despite walking around during some really hot days, I didn’t sweat and I didn’t smell sweaty.

One afternoon I fell asleep at home on a really hot day in my winter PJ’s. Woke up to an absolute sauna with my body dripping in sweat but my armpits were fine – no sweat, no smell.

Anyway I have been using the lemon juice everyday for 10 days now.

My only quibble is the cost of lemons so far. Then again, I have been using organic lemons, so it’s my own fault for being a silly sausage.

Oh yes, and my under arm rash has healed up too.

I also found this and thought I would give it a go too:

Under Arm Protection!

Another amazing result many are reporting from Virgin Coconut Oil is using it directly under their arms as a deodorant! Many have theorized that the MCTs in the oil attack the bacteria in sweat that cause the odours.

I have been using straight VCO as an underarm deodorant since last fall. Works wonders. Works just as good as any antiperspirant deodorant I have ever used: you just don't have the fragrance from regular deodorant. I have a job that requires a lot of manual labour and my VCO deodorant has not failed me yet, even when over heated. Abigail (Coconut Diet Forums)

I used some VCO on a paper towel and put under my arms. It is like magic! No smell, no sweat, awesome!!!!!!! I just got back from biking and not a drop of sweat under my arms! Jackie (Coconut Diet Forums)

This is amazing!! I've been searching for a natural deodorant for about two years now - I've tried the crystal salt sticks and every kind of organic roll-on on the market and at the end of the day I always feel stinky. Can't wait to try this!!  :ohyeah:

I think I'll be trying this too.  My store-bought-generic-chemical deodorant is about to run out, so it's a great time to try.  Will let you know how I go :)

UPDATE:

Even though you have to plan (in other words, remember to squeeze the lemon juice BEFORE you get under the shower) and it is a little bit time consuming and messy, I am going to stick with the lemon juice, as it works really well for me.

I actually like the coconut oil better. It does not sting when applied and it is very easy and quick to use but for me personally, it does not work as well as the lemon juice.

On the other hand, my husband does not like the lemon juice. He loves the coconut oil and it works really, really well for him. For the past week, he has applied a tiny amount of coconut oil every morning at 6.00am after a shower and remained sweet smelling and sweat-free all day.

He has very hairy armpits and I don’t. So (as odd as it sounds) I am wondering if that has something to do with the coconut oil working better on him ??

Anyway both ways are great and very natural.

Thanks for the update.

Actually I think this should fit really well into my morning routine as I've been doing the warm-water and lemon drink on waking... I can just squeeze a bit extra :)

I read that coconut oil is used in alot of organic wash products. So it gave me an idea to use squeezed lemon juice and  juice of coconut milk as a body wash. I have to try it to see if it reacts. I also found out Islanders use lemon as deodorant and they have coconut trees. Go figure!

Thanks for your entry to this Kittyk. Im happy others are finding good experiences with it.

I'm thinking I must be really lazy, as I don't squeeze the lemon juice at all, just cut a wedge and rub it on my skin.

Ok so I'm three days in and so far so good. It isn't perfect - by the end of the day I still smell a bit sweaty, but it's more spicy than unpleasant. I'm not 100% raw so far I'm still finding my feat but most days like today I'm probably 60% raw which is a good place to start from. I imagine that the rawer you get, the less smelly you are. Do you reckon that's true?

One really interesting thing that I've found is that the extra lemon makes a really good toner. I suffer from adult acne periodically, especially around my menstrual days. But I've had this really stubborn patch of acne on my jaw line that hasn't shifted for months. After showering and washing I applied the left over lemon juice to my face and neck. In three days, the acne has shrunk and is starting to clear - I can't believe it.  :ohyeah:

Sooooooo happy about this. It's worked well on the rest of my face, thought I think in the long run I might use it every second or third day on my face once the skin is cleared. The lemon feels quite intense and it stings a bit when applied but after a few minutes my skin tightens up as if I had used toner. I got the idea from an old home-made beauty treatment book which said that lemon applied to freckles helps them fade and the lemon juice was there anyway.... Well it seems to work with acne too!! Love to know if it works as well for others.

In my experience, this is not always the case.  Certainly whatever is "detoxing" from your body can translate to
pongy pits, but the materials that you wear on your body can also have an effect, to name just one other cause.

But I've had this really stubborn patch of acne on my jaw line that hasn't shifted for months.

I am not a beautician or dermatologist, so this might be totally off the mark, but I have heard a number of times that outbreaks under the jawline (neck area and down) are usually hormonally based.  Sometimes, outbreaks right on the jawline are caused from washing the face area, and not rinsing thoroughly; so that clogging happens on the jawline from products not rinsed away properly.

Just a thought, but as I said, I am far from an expert.

yes a dab or two of lemon juice is the quickest thing i know of to get rid of a pimple.

the only time i experience armpit odour is when my diet is less than optimal, even with intense physical activity/sweating.  i haven't noticed any difference between fabrics for me personally.

I think your right in saying it's hormonal just because of the "when" the acne flares up although this crop has been particularly stubborn  so it could be a combination of things like you're suggesting. If it is clogging the lemon seems to be helping a lot. Just glanced in the mirror on my way from the bathroom and couldn't really see them at all this morning which is a big relief!!

Yes, I think it is true (for me at least).

* Since cutting down on meat I have noticed that I sweat less and have fewer odours.

As you say, the odour through lemon juice or coconut oil is more spicy (smells a bit like a very mild sweet curry) than unpleasant.

 * I haven’t totally given meat up yet. Before I started to eat raw vegan, I was eating meat twice a day everyday. Nowadays I am only eating meat once or twice a month.

I found reading all the info about cleansing from Matt Monarch and Dr Norman Walker very revealing in terms of  how long it takes the body to cleanse itself from all the toxins we put into it - sweat being one of the ways the body compensates for all the blockages in the colon created by meat and other things we've put our body through. I guess a little odor is a good sign that the body is working really hard to cleanse us... It's nice to know that our bodies are, on the whole on our side, even when we make pretty poor choices.

That was a great idea.  I thought i would smell too much of lemon but it didn't!!!
I also sometimes soak vanilla beans in some water and then use that as deo! smells a bit too much vanilly but i love it :)

I agree with you, Sanghama- just cut a small wedge, rub one side (and squeeze a bit) under one arm, and rub the other side under the other arm. Then flap around a bit while it dries. It actually works!

I have been cutting small wedges anyway to have with my two glasses of water in the morning on waking, and i even used the that very same wedge today. Then I went out and helped Hubby in the garden, and hardly sweated at all (usually I sweat even through the "24 hr +" deo), and even after all that, I smelled "spicy" not rank at all, as I would if I had my normal spray deo on!!

ME THINK THIS 'MAZING!!   :yahh: Thank you so much!!

I ran out of lemons while I was away, and remembered the coconut oil posts from this thread.  So I started using coconut oil as a deodorant - it was fantastic.  Thanks guys ;)

ANOTHER UPDATE:

I have come to realise that I was using far too much lemon juice.

These days we cut ¼ bit of lemon, cut most of the flesh out and put it in our morning juices and then we rub the remaining section of flesh under our pits.

Hubby now uses lemon juice and tops it off with a smear of coconut oil, as this stops the stinging (he has a rash under his arms).

Since my original post I have alternated between coconut oil and lemon juice, depending on what I feel like any given morning.

Sometimes even used lime juice, works just as well. Just wondering of orange juice will also work?

Only used normal deodorant five times since my original post, on those days we had run out of coconut oil and lemons.

I have not used deodorant since March, I have been using the lemon juice and it has been fantastic all winter.

Sadly it doesn’t seem to work on hot days.

At the weekend it was warm and I was ponging!

Well I could smell myself (which is always a bad sign) so I am sure other people could smell me too.

Coconut oil did not work either.

I had to resort to deodorant for the first time in six months.
