Title: iceberg lettuce question and about greens in general
Post by: tora chan on Wednesday 07 May, 2008
i have a question. i can't eat alot of greens and i am wondering if most raw foodists find green smoothies do boost their hydrochloric acid in their stomachs and therefore digestion? it seems to me from reading green for life that is essential for raw foodists to do this to get the maximum amount of nutrients from their food. i find that eating alot of greens is hard for me and it can make my stomach upset however iceberg lettuce i find easy to digest. i am wondering if it is nearly as nutritious as other darker varieties of lettuce and greens if anybody knows much about it.

Nutrient breakdown of Iceberg Lettuce compaired to Romaine (cos):

One cup of iceberg lettuce
:
8 calories
0.5 gram protein
0.7 gram fiber
10 mg calcium
78 mg potassium
1.5 mg vitamin C
16 mcg folate
13.3 mcg of vitamin K
164 mcg beta carotene
152 mcg of lutein + zeaxanthin

One cup of romaine lettuce has:
8 calories
0.58 gram protein
1 gram fiber
16 mg calcium
116 mg potassium
11.3 mg vitamin C
64 mcg folate
48.2 mcg vitamin K
1637 mcg beta carotene
1087 mcg of lutein + zeaxanthin.

I add greens to lots of things to help get more in a day. Smoothies, juices, salads, crackers, ice-blocks, dips, etc. Be creative and try experimenting. I mix greens with most things without any hassle and I know that's the case for most - are you sure it's the greens giving you the belly ache?

Perhaps you could try a variety and find ones that taste good and don't worry your digestive system. Baby spinach, baby cos, chard and celery would be a few mild tasting greens.

Some people find that the powered greens work well for them. I haven't tried it mysef but perhaps it's something you could look into.

Have fun finding what works for you.

Its interesting that you find iceberg easiest to digest, because for me, its the one green that sits badly in my stomach. Weird hey.

that is wierd. honestly though i can't be sure that this feeling i get is from greens. i feel quite sure sometimes that it's greens causing this feeling but i'm sure iceberg has never given me a bloated feeling opposed to other greens.

I asked about iceberg not long after going raw and was told that it is a great source of structured water. I like it and digest it well. I don't digest asian greens well, such as bok choy. I find them too spicy.

oxoxo

Trav, have you tried blending your greens into green smoothies yet?perhaps you just couldnt chew them enough to make them more digestible?

i find,dark/bright green fancy lettuce...and cos lettuce easy to digest...and baby spinach...

also to give you the nutritious mineral rich water...juicing is amazing!

i like the iceberg when its dark green as possible...not the pale insipid varieties...lol

greens are so essential in my diet....especially as i eat so much fruit...hey i think its super important that everyone has greens...all those awesome minerals..and greens are so grounding and calming on your nervous system!
