Title: Almond Milk made me sick!!! Why???
Post by: Pinky on Monday 18 August, 2008
Last night I made some almond milk with a little honey and a banana. I strained it through a clean chux (could this be the problem????) that I had rinsed (I dont have a nut bag, But I am ordering one Jen with the other stuff for my bday). Oh the nuts I know wernt raw but I had soaked them for 24 hours.

I was so sick after it I had a burning in my stomack and felt so sick, my head started to spin, and all I could do is go and lay down. I went to the toilet twice which helped a little.....

So do you guys know why it did this????? Sould I avoid almond milk for the time being. I have been doing the raw challenge now for 9 days and other then this I feel fantastic.

Also is it fatening like nuts are. Cause you arnt actually eating the nuts so I was wondering if it has a high fat content just like normal nuts do??????

Have a great week everyone
Angie

Hey Angie,

You're so creative, thinking of the chux to strain the nut milk - let nothing stand between a gal and her nut milk, I say!

Maybe it was the chux.  Maybe it wasn't.  Who knows?  Chux might be impregnated with some nasties that have upset your stomach?

Until your nutmilk bag arrives, perhaps buy a cheap pair of panty hose or trouser socks - that might be a safer option.  Or, if you have one of those bags for delicate lingerie - that could work too.

Another thing to consider..was the banana ripe?  I know that any unripe fruit makes me feel really unwell almost instantly, and bananas are no exception.

I also find that I can only really drink nut milk based smoothies on an empty stomach, otherwise it can cause me grief.  Did you have anything in your stomach when you had the nutmilk?  Sometimes this can cause upset.

Perhaps if you try again in a day or so, on an empty tummy (with out the chux ;)) and see how it goes.

I have no idea on the fat content of almond milk, but almonds are not a "fatty" nut.  Even though you're not actually eating the nut, you are eating the nut  because the nutmilk is made of water + whatever amount of nuts are mushed and don't end up in the pulp.  But, I wouldn't worry about the fat content if you are eating lots of balancing fruit, veg & greens.

I'd say the fat content would be variable as to how much water you put in it. I hope you are feeling better now Pinky.

I'm wondering though if it really was the nut milk? have you had it before? I remember I reacted to something raw once, I assumed it was the Green Smoothie that I was rejecting but it turned out I'd just had a tummy bug. I didn't know until days later when the kids had the exact same symptoms....

I hope you feel better soon.

I agree with Miss G, good thinking with the chux. I know a lady who likes to use stocking socks. Really thick ones and that works well for her. She prefers it to the nut milk bags. I prefer the nut milk bag as I split the stockings when I tried it that way.

i'd be very careful with the almonds you choose. i bought some from mrs flannerys that seemed ok but were a good price and i'm quite sure they were rancid after straining it into a bowl because the liquid looked different to usual very oily and just different.from now on i'm only going with really good fresh organic almonds. i don't have a nut milk bag either so i use a teatowel and it works well.

Thanks everyone the advise is very much appreciated. I think I might just soak these almond and then dry them out again then use Organic ones for my milk and see how I go.

Thanks again

Does that mean you were trying to make nut milk out of roasted almonds?  Soaking a non raw nut would probably make it even more problematic than not soaking it.   The coooked oils in the nut would probably not be any good in almond milk.

Yes I would say so.

Some of these types of cloths are impregnated with oils and chemicals to help the cloth pick up more dirt.

They are 'raw' almonds (you know what most people call raw) not roasted.

Thanks Hairyfairy I thought that might have been a problem I am just avoiding them till I get my nut milk bag
