1  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / Off Topic Chat / Re: Childrens cartoons are bad mmm kay... on: Saturday 15 March, 2008
which cartoons is your daughter watching just out of curiosity?

maybe you should just talk to her why you think swearing is lame and if she respects your opinion enough she will probably listen.
2  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / Off Topic Chat / Re: Childrens cartoons are bad mmm kay... on: Friday 14 March, 2008
shows like tom and jerry and popeye are pretty violent.  back in those days they didn't have viewer ratings that you see on tv today, and they didn't have as much angry moms calling the tv stations telling them the cartoons were too violent.    you can look to images and icons from the past, and see for yourself...

look at this dvd case.  it is suggesting sex.  it is placing a woman in a role type.  weak.  look at her feet.  look at the clothes she is wearing.  could it possibly be giving out the message this is what a woman is supposed to be like?

here is another one.

as i look back i can see these cartoons affected my head, but at the same time my parents sat me in front of the tv to babysit me while they were working and going to school.  this is what i had to immitate, and i watched tv for a huge portion of my day.

yes, the messages are there whatever era, but however your child turns out, cartoons are definately not to blame.

in the end i did not turn out to be a cerial killer, but i could have used some confidence, but it really had nothing to do with cartoons what it had to do with was people being there for me, supporting me, encouraging me, ect.  this was not there, so the tv took over in those aspects.  the discipline was there though, and I was always polite.  like I remember one time i was out with my parents and someone was handing me something, and i snatched it out of their hands specifically imagining like it was like what bugs bunny would do, and my father got soooo mad at me.  he was like jennifer!  that was so rude!  you give that back to her and take them like a nice young lady would!  and apologize!  and i did and i never did that again....  not necessarily because i thought it was wrong, but cuz i didn't want to get in trouble.  now that i am older and i look back i would never snatch something out of someone's hands like that though because it's not polite.  i watched the cartoons because they were funny, interesting, and provided me with imagination inspiration, not because they were violent or whatever.

no matter where you bring your child, there are going to be negative influences upon them.  instead of controlling what one hears or sees by trying to protect and shield them, i believe in just encouraging them and providing them with a strong sense of values.  idk how one goes about doing that, but i know for sure you can't shield or protect someone from te world, and if you are successful in doing so, speaking only from my personal experience, they are likely to be afraid of spreading their wings out in the world.

here is another example.  this cartoon character (speedy) has so many racial stereotypes that are totally blatant.  it's really funny, but it is also sending out a message that could easily lead to prejudice.

why is the evil man dark, and the good guys in this movie all white?  this movie takes place in agraba, and the bad guy is the only guy who does not look white?

this is what all black people look like and act like and they carry guns.

someone told me this cartoon had racist connotations, but i've seen it a few times and can't see why...

what ever you do don't let your children watch tom and jerry because they might start smoking and that is very unhealthy.

and then they might be using meat to beat people up with, or even worse, they might start eating dairy.

cartoons of the past are pretty messed up.  look at the malice in hid face, and how scared the poor little mouse is.  =(

lol where does one start?

today at least there are ratings and stuff.  a lot of things would not even slide today that were on tv all those years ago.  i don't think cartoons have gotten any worse.  society might have become more technologically advanced and there might be more conveniences, and people working more hours spending less time at home and therefore an increased sense of alienation towards one's family causing parents to be more neglectful of their children...  but that is a whole different idea intirely (not that i am accusing you of that at all i have no idea what goes on in your home).

i used to be "allergic" to tomato and apples, and then i started eating them organic and i stopped being allergic...  i started feeling better, too.  I was only allergic when i ate in large quantities.

i think like lea said a lot of times when people become allergic to something it is because they are allergic to the poisons in the fruit, and not the fruit itself.

your library must have it, and if it does not, i'm sure you can get it for very inexpensive.  it is a famous book.

rawgasm:  exactly.  that's why I said that.  the book is supposed to take place i think like 600 years in the future, but in reality like you said there are striking similarities in our worlds.  it's crazy.

I think I was 15 when I read the book which was required for me at my school (i was in homeschool).  at the time i read it, i thought it was a really boring book.  I did not enjoy it, or understand it at all.  I lived a very sheltered life, and at the age of 15 i was not allowed out very much at all.  as I got older, i found myself relating a lot about what i learned about life and that book.  the book is really interesting.  there is a movie, too.  not as good as the book, but still out there.  my dad said he thinks the book is "too weird" for him.  It's the kind of story I think that forces one to think and reflect upon their own actions and their own society.  I think it allows you to do that because it is placed in a place that is so far beyond our society, so we are allowed to look at it objectively.  I remember some of the questions i had to answer while reading the book like, "what do you think about society in the story?"  or "how do you feel about when this person says this to that person?  what would you do?"  and stuff like that.  =)

Im glad I read the book.  at the time I thought it was a waste of time, but i think i learned a lot from it.

it's like what my mom says when you plant a seed, it has nothing to do but grow.

i don't know if all schools are required to read that book, but if they are not I really think they should be, and then encourage a class discussion on it.  I don't think highschool teachers here have much say over what is taught in their class.  i think there is a program that they have to follow.

what is the difference?
6  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / Off Topic Chat / Re: Pepsi Raw: Can Pepsi Actually Make Something Natural? on: Friday 07 March, 2008
jen, it is the title of a science fiction novel.  all the characters are on drugs distributed to them by the government that stablize their moods and makes everyone identical.  the power feels like individual freedom is a small price to pay for stability.  it's pretty well known out here, i'm surprised you have never heard of it?  i read it for school when i was 15.

I started a thread about this in the journals section, and now I don't know where is a better place to post?

I know I was all gung ho about starting the juice fast/feast, but I didn't even start.  I did start, but due to circumstances I could not continue unfortunately.  I am starting tomorrow, and am sure I will be successful this time.  It was just kind of a unique situation, but I don't feel like giving energy to the excuses and the explaining of myself right now.

good news for me this week though (which was the craziest week ever...)

i have a series of three ink wash paintings in an art show this week (my first time ever showcasing my art).  because of my unique situation and background, it actually brings a tear to my eye.  it has taken a lot of courage for me to get this far, and it's something that some time ago, i never thought i would have the courage enough to believe in myself to do.

and something else that i don't want to say yet because it's not set in stone...  but it's even better.  =)

had a crazy midterm of doom in a required general ed class for cal states graduation (american government and politics)...  not sure how i did.  This teacher loves to give out trick questions.

also had a very big mid term assignment due this week for my life drawing class, which I am proud of.

so, to conclude this week, i am starting my feast tomorrow with looking to the present of the beginning of a promising career...  even though it's not beginning.  i suppose every moment in my life before this has brought me to this moment...  but i really like to look at it like i am starting off on a clean slate because it makes it all feel more epic.  I have this goal, and i am in the process of making it happen.  <3

I am starting out my day tomorrow with water.

I didn't mean to take up this whole post with barely any juicing, and all about my personal life, but I just wanted to share with my friends.  I love how supportive everyone is here, so it just feels comfortable.

whether you would drink it or not, i think it is a step in the right direction.  i just got this really cool vision...  like this sci fi futuristic vision and nature at the same time it's fascinating i'm going to go draw now.
12  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / Off Topic Chat / Re: Childrens cartoons are bad mmm kay... on: Friday 07 March, 2008
cartoons are not bad.  children are like sponges.  we learn from imitation.  at such a young age the more tv a child watches, the more they will become like the tv they watch.  it's really your call on what you should do.

cartoons rock.  They can be really inspiring.  everything in moderation though.  it's def not good imo for someone to be raised by the tv (not saying that is what u do or anything i have no idea what goes on in ur home).

I was raised by the tv, and i learned a lot of things that i look back on now and feel like it was ridiculous, and can understand now that a lot of insecurities i had growing up stemmed by that.

i do not watch tv anymore, however, i do watch a ton of cartoons on dvd.  i'm 22, but plan on watching cartoons forever.  i don't watch any live action shows (but on occasion will watch a live action movie).  with a cartoon, there is a lot one can do which they cannot do in live action.  it is a great way to tell a story, or convey a message.  it is important for children to learn stories so they can better assess situations and learn about they world/themselves.  I think cartoons are a fantastic medium for both children and adults.  saying that cartoons are bad is like someone who hates vegans because they met one once and they thought they were an abnoxious preacher who tried to make everyone around them feel guilty for "killing" animals or something.

i think it's really good for a child to gain ideas from many many different aspects of life, including artwork and story telling in an animated form.

monitor your child.  yes of course that is important.  i think that's all it comes down to.

we can find a million things wrong in a million things.  there is always a reason not to do anything and everything.  does that mean we should not do anything at all?

fuel a child's imagination.  also, teach a child strong foundational basis to assess situations on their own because even if you take away the tv, if you are living in society, are you going to seperate your child from that, as well?  teach a child a core set of values by incorperating these values into your own life.  children imitate their parents the most.

i don't have any children, but i am very interested in children, and also am a child that will never grow up.

15  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / RAW Chat / Re: Went to the psychiatrist this afternoon... on: Tuesday 04 March, 2008
my aunt had cancer for a few years.  she was diagnosed in the summer of 04.  my grama took her to all of these "witch doctors" and other people, and they gave her some remedies that did not make very much sense to me.  maybe it was just me, or maybe i heard wrong, or didn't listen clear enough...  but it was things like they gave them these herbs, and special arrowhead water (that i ended up drinking one on accident and got in trouble!  =( i swear i didn't know! ), and they said things like let this one sit for two hours, and then put this stuff in, and put it out in the sun, and then have her drink it...  it didn't make sense to me at all, but maybe that's cuz i just didn't understand the science behind it.  I say that because sometimes i think things that make total sense to me, and no one understands what i mean by it, or think it does not make any sense.

i gave her this book i had it was called healing cancer with raw foods or something like that.  it was a really small book...  it didn't really have much to do with cancer besides the title, but it did say some things about cancer.  i forget exactly it was a couple years ago.  she didn't even read it tho...  like at ALL.  didn't even open the book.  it's crazy for me to think about because she tried all these really complicated remedies that personally i think i would be way to lazy to do, but she did them, but simply eating raw foods she did not do...  and she was really miserable too i remember because she was always constipated.  not saying that it would have worked or not...  really i don't know.  i have never had cancer or any serious illness besides my crazy mental issues.  ;P

anyway, she died in my house in the summer of 07.  it was a weird time.

my point is that sometimes...  i don't understand people and their rationalities, and they don't understand yours, or mine, and we all sometimes don't even understand each other.  doctors and anyone for that matter simply base things on their understanding of things.  no science is fact, it is all just a theory until proven otherwise.
