Today Kelly and I made a smoothie of almost all free ingredients,
We gleaned mini-mandarine like fruit, and some dock, plantain and mustard leaves on the way home from taking my niece to school this morning.
the recipe was;
1/2 - 1kg mini mandi's large bunch of dock leaves a few dates to taste.
It didnt turn out as the most delicious smoothie ever, but plenty nutritious and filling.
Spending money on food has been stressing me out a bit lately, Sergei's talk was perfectly timed, i'm all inspired to get gleaning again.. bring on fig season!
I agree with DR, but i think that some mountain bikes can make fine bikes for on road riding. Just dont get Dual suspesion. Either none, or front suspesion only and change the nobbly tyres for slicks, (road tyres).
DR- Actually my 'carbon sex toy bikes' are still just a dream cos I sold one before i left..
But yes, my current steed, is quite the rustbox. I enjoy the challenge of breaking bikes and fixing them.
So far after 4500kms in 6 months, the old beast (its older than I am) has gone through -2 whole patch kits, (20 patches +) -one spare tube, -has lost 3 bag rack bolts, -bent one arm of the rack, -All the major bearing are loose, except the front wheel. -The handle bar tape has come off 3 times. and it would have been more if i was faster to fix it. -Oh and i snapped a brake cable, but didnt fix it till after riding down the steepest hil we've done yet! Very not advisable. In fact VERY scary.
I think this post needs one of those warnings: Dave is a very experienced bike rider (and slightly irresoponsible at times), what ever you do do not try this at home or at all..
I also have a freind who made one, its a solar dehydrator, basically just a very shallow box with a perspex top, lots of holes drilled in the sides for ventilation and a small fan to get some air circulation.
Unfortunately he doesnt have email.
Good luck with your efforts. probably a great way to save some cash over a commercial one. mmm.. my mind is ticking over now...
Kell and I will be back in Ad's in late June, and I rekon I could be pretty keen to help you organise any potential festivals... I'm not too sure of my plans when I get back though, so cant commit definately.
Because there's more people on bikes, drivers are looking out for them, and because of all the bike and foot traffic, that the cars are going slower, so its not so intimidating.
aguacate- you can also get a basket for the front of your bike, they can be good for easily putting the shopping in, but arent so cool. If you dont mind the image, it might also help keep the bike theives away.
Australia has pretty thorough testing so any helmet will protect your head. But make sure you get one that fits and wear it properly. That probably makes the biggest difference for safety. Go to a decent bike shop and they will help fit it for you. I cant stress how important this is. you might as well not wear it if its not on your head properly.
Helmets can range in price from $20-300. the main difference is the number and size of air-flow holes, to keep your head cool. Theres also differences in quality, but unless your a serious racer, you dont need to pay too much.
And then theres the importance of looks. generally the more you spend the nicer it looks.
Anyone guess what my job is? ...teaching bike ed to school kids
