1666  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / RAW Chat / Re: Sunbeam Healthy Food Dryer on: Wednesday 28 June, 2006
I'm glad you like what I said - I didn't even think about it, it's just the truth! smiley
That would be cool if it went 'around the wolrd!'
Yes, I did mean layering all the empty trays in the dehydrator, hopefully that will make enough of a difference. I tried ringing the company but, of course, they work on Eastern Standards Time and are already closed for today - the one drawback of living in WA.

By working with food I just meant cooking, but then realised that that was kind of a stupid thing to say since the whole idea of raw is that the food isn't cooked! cheesy I just mean I love creating meals - it's strange because, as I said, mum has always found any time spent in the kitchen to be time she would much rather be somewhere else but for me it's a pleasure. Raw is making it even better!
In terms of actual 'work' I'm studying vet science at uni, but I only just started (that's why we moved to Perth) so I've got a while to go yet.

You are vegan too but out of interest, what's your standing on honey? I don't eat it and that has always been a sore point with my family (extended family, not parents) - they just don't get where I'm coming from. I've heard so many different opinions from vegans who do and don't eat it.

That's nice to hear - I have to admit, I was just about in tears at the thought of my wonderful new toy being a waste of time. The machine has five trays and I'm thinking at the moment that the best way to keep the temp down as much as possible will be to put my food on the bottom tray and put all the other in between that and the fan.

I only just moved to Perth and I also only just got into raw, it's really awesome (should I say rawesome? smiley) that the two go so well together!

My parents are pretty awesome. I went vegetarian at 14 (four years ago in November) and they were reallt supportive, then vegan just over two years ago. That was a bit harder for them to cope with but since then my absolute love of cooking/working with food has absolutely blossomed so not only do I cook for myself all the time (great for mum, who hates cooking cheesy) but I make them yummy vegan treats too. Mum has since become a vegetarian. I'm not sure that I'm going to go 100% raw, and I certainly haven't put it to them striaght-out the way I did with veganism, although that a strictly moral thing and once I knew the truth about dairy farms I was never going near milk or milk products again. Raw is for me - vegan was for the animals (although it's great for me too).

I'm so happy to have found these boards - they are a great place to chat, get questions answered and, best of all, find recipes! I'm definately going to try Katie and SImon's pizza base recipe, although the trays of the dehydrator have holes in the middle so I will either have lots of mini pizzas, or interesting doughnut pizzas!

Phew, sorry for the long post!

Well thats depressing. It was bought on e-bay (new) so I don't know how retuning will go... also its an early birthday present from my mum and dad. It's been going for about 2 and a half hours (just a test run drying some strawberries) and feels disturbingly hot.  huh

I'm in Australia so I'm not near an actual wholefood market like what you're referring to - I'm just talking about a little shop called Manna Wholefoods - it does have great range and lots of organics though!

I will call the company and see what I can find out. What is the point of selling a dehydrator that goes above 118F? Just out of interest, why is the Ezidri for sale on this website if it gets to 55C?

I think I will use the dehydrator for now anyway - I have way too many exciting recipies lined up to try! I guess it's still better than cooked food. Maybe when I'm not a poor uni student I can get a better one.
1669  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / RAW Chat / Sunbeam Healthy Food Dryer on: Wednesday 28 June, 2006
HUGE excitement... I got one of these dehydrators yesterday! cheesy
However, I have no idea what temperature it operates at and the instruction booklet is not helping me. There is no way of adjusting the temp (not that I can see, anyway) and as different recipes call for different temperatures I wondering what I can do to overcome this problem. If anyone has one of these dehydrators, or can help me out at all, I would appreciate it very much. I'm going to attempt my first recipe very soon (after an emergency trip to the wholefoods shop! smiley) so I think I'll just see what happens and watch my food, but a more definite idea would be really good.
Thanks in advance!

Okay thanks, I'll be trying it soon  smiley
By the way, I e-mailed you the response to the survey about the Raw Cafe  the other day - did you get it?

Hi everyone, I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what size pizza base this makes? Thanks in advance!
1672  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / RAW Chat / Re: Is Miso Raw? on: Tuesday 27 June, 2006
*Juliano used maple syrup too.. and that's definitely not raw!*

Okay I'm new to this but why is maple syrup not raw? Isn't it just taken from the tree? Is it possible to get actual raw maple syrup if you get it yourself, in which case it is just the processing that makes it not raw? Any info appreciated! smiley

This recipe is in RAW: The UNCookbook by Juliano. AM I allowed to post it, or is that copright infringement? (I haven't tried it, but it looks great!)

Thanks Jen, but I was in Manna last Monday (as I am most weeks smiley) and I couldn't find them. Maybe I should just ask? If not, I'll definately try Healthy Valley Organics.
1675  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / Recipes - Meals & Snacks / Custard Apples (Cherimoya?) on: Saturday 24 June, 2006
I'm looking for recipes. I found this one just by doing a web search but I'd love to know how everyone else eats theirs.

Cherimoya tropical dessert sauce
This delicious sauce goes great with desserts, ice-cream, frozen yoghurt, cakes or pancakes.
500g cherimoya flesh, seeds removed
250g small banana chunks
1 175g can crushed pineapple with juice
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp freshly ground nutmeg

Blend all ingredients until nearly smooth, with a few textural fruit chunks left. Best served either warm or chilled. Keeps for 4–6 hours in the fridge but doesn’t keep well frozen.
Makes about 4 cups.

Obviously you would want to use fresh pineapple instead of tinned and I guess cinnamon and nutmeg aren't strictly raw but this could be a good start.

Mmmm, this looks so good. I'ma vegan so don't eat honey but soaked dates would work great I'm sure. Will definately try!
1677  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / Recipes - Meals & Snacks / Re: Great Chick Pea Free Hoummus! on: Saturday 24 June, 2006
Mmmm, sounds really good. I think I need to get some zucchini (pfft, it's zucchini, not courgette!  cheesy)
1678  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / Recipes - Meals & Snacks / Re: Brazil nut pate on: Friday 23 June, 2006
I love nut pate type things but have very little experience with brazil nuts. This sounds super yummy, although I don't like things very spicy so I might go easy on the chilli!
1679  Locally RAW / Australia & New Zealand / Re: Young Coconuts in Perth on: Friday 23 June, 2006
This seems to have been a really successful way to find young coconuts, so I want help finding some other things in Perth. I'm looking for:
oat groats, kamut and spelt grains and wheatberries. Any ideas?
1680  PleasureTalk - The Discussion Area / RAW Chat / Re: Is Miso Raw? on: Wednesday 21 June, 2006
I've got no idea, but miso of all colours is used LOTS in Juliano's RAW: The UNCookbook, so I kinda assumed it was.
