Didn't really think about it til now but I just went one week raw!!! Since hearing about rawfoodism from friends the last couple years I have always wanted to try raw. I thought it would be good to try it for a week and continue it if I enjoyed it.

I had a week of raw and then last night was so hungry and in a rush (on my way home from work) that I had a vegie (cooked) pastie. I'm not gonna beat myself up for it, it tasted okay, but nowhere near as good as yummy raw food tastes! So it's back to eating raw, or at least.. aiming for 100% raw food!

Good one pea.  You're right not to beat yourself up over a slight detour on the raw path.  It isn't easy just eating raw straight away but a week going 100% raw is something to celebrate.  I still have to odd lapse after a year and a half, and it's usually when I'm rushed or tired.  But hey, lets not talk about lapses..... you went raw for a week  yayy!!  woo hoo!!

thanks guys!

really, you still get lapses? yeah i guess.... i know a few "vegans" who call themselves vegan and might eat the odd non vegan thing, mostly if it's in another product.

i was (am) vegan for 7 years and only last year i "lapsed" and ate two awful non vegan things intentionally. they both made me sick as, and helped (amongst other things) reinforce why i'm vegan.

Yeah I still get lapses.  Breakfast I can eat raw fine.  Lunch is fine.  Dinner usually fine if I'm with Jen.  Sometimes it's eating out where I lapse.  Usually pasta or fish.  The effect is amazing..... often I become so dumbed down and slow it's like I'm drugged.  It always reinforces why raw is the only way.  But i'm one of those people that always learns things the hard way.  The urges to eat cooked are definitely subsiding as time goes by.  Instead of feeling deflated when I eat something crappy I always remind myself that being raw is worthwhile and anything worthwhile takes time and persistence.

Urban Forager,

It's great that you're looking at the positive's of eating bad food, if that makes sense. Ie, reinforcing why you're raw, rather than feel crap cos you've eaten cooked food. I think that is the way to go! Smiley

Cheers Pea and Neet  smiley

I think from all the conflicting literature on "the best" way to be raw EVERYONE is still learning.  And the best way to learn is to listen to your body and customise your raw diet accordingly.  When I was eating cooked I never used to notice how my body reacted to things.  In my last job I used to eat a big sandwich or pasta for lunch and get so sleepy I would nap under my desk for an hour afterwards.  For those interested it WAS a govt job  cheesy which is why I never got caught out.  I thought that was a normal thing after eating and accepted it.  After all isn't that why siestas were invented?  After being high raw for a year and a half I notice every little imbalance in my body and try to understand how my food has contributed.  The whole cooked vs raw thing is really noticeable to me now....... it's so clear that I'll feel crappy after I eat a big cooked meal but I still give in every now and then and do it anyway  huh.  I guess that's the nature of any addiction whether it be drugs or cooked food.

So Pea, whether your feeling great on raw or crappy because of detoxing, or crappy because you ate some cooked I hope the whole experience helps you get in touch with how food affects the way you feel.  At the risk of sounding all high and mighty it is a very liberating feeling and it is worth sticking with it.  Best wishes...

I'm learning an important lesson at the moment on flax crackers.  Jen and I made these savory beauties that are so addictive we just ate like a week's worth in two days.  And the reaction.......... well let me just say that my office is not the freshest part of the building at the moment  evil.  I've had a similar reaction before but I couldn't quite isolate the source.  Now I'm positive it's too many flax crackers.  I'm wondering has anyone else has had a similar experience because they seem to be popular amongst raw foodists?

Hey UF, I just noticed your comment on the effects of flax crackers. I experimented with some last week (using the oven on lowest temp. with door open, as I don't have a dehydrator). Same effect. Plus, they brought back the colitis symptoms I'd been so happy to relieve with raw food. Not for me I'm afraid.

I thought I'd eat the last few flax crackers that were left (only a few) but today the same reaction.  Such a shame because they are such a cool crunchy alternative food.  I even tried drinking heaps of water but still the same reaction.  Oh well crunchy celery and apples are still wicked!!!
