I am still mourning the loss of peaches in my green smoothies, but have bravely embarked on Autumn variations.

Today's:

Blender full of baby spinach
5 Chinese broccoli leaves
2 x frozen bananas
1 x new season apple (Jonathan I think)
1 x Bosch pear
The juice of 1 x Valencia orange

It was really scrumptious (just a little less scrummy than my peachy ones).

What is everyone else whipping up with the fruit of the season?

I picked up a lot of peaches at the fruit market last week, and a few more at the local farmer's market on Saturday - they're yet to soften so I'm in peaches for a few days more Smiley Envy you for the mangoes though, it's been two weeks since I've seen one of them here.... sigh..

Today's GS featured beet greens, frozen banana, pear (as I'd used the last of the soft peaches, and the others are not ready til tomorrow at least), and frozen berries. Was a bit tart so threw in some agave nectar. And some maca powder as well - ZING!!!

Have been taking them to work and my boss is intrigued. Today's version was brown/grey due to the berries, but despite the off colour she asked for a taste for the first time and loved it. But she won't have it as an ongoing thing because she's on one of those evil  evil low-carb hi-meat CSIRO/Livestock Industry diets and it contains more fruit than she is allowed. Her loss  rolleyes

The thought of apple in a GS scares me for some reason, but given Miss Giggle's enthusiastic review of her latest blend, I'll have to give it a go. Can't try the orange though, I'm allergic.

Miss Manda,

I have peach envy!  We actually have quite a number at work, sitting on a desk trying to ripen in the sun.  I just have a sneaking suspicion they are not going to ripen for some reason.  They really really look like peaches on their last legs, end of season run out sale! Still, I could be wrong, and I have one on my desk which I shall bring home for a gs.  And I'll try to pinch at least one other.  cheesy

What was the maca like in the gs?  I'm not a great fan of it I'm afraid, but have a container to finish.  Weird tasting stuff that just seems to overpower anything it is added to.

There's a girl at work on the same kind of diet - protein city.  Weight loss will come - any time you take out a major group of foods, you'll lose weight, but at what price?  And raw or not, I honestly can't understand swapping a fruit breakfast for two huge slabs of salmon with cream cheese smeared on it.  Eek.  And as an 'off the diet Easter treat' her lunch today included a whole packet of BBQ shapes.

Just quietly, the thing that worries me most about those high protein, eat any/all meat in sight diets is the (avert your eyes if you are eating now) resulting bowel business, or lack thereof.  I feel in pain just thinking about it.

Apples in the gs, to me, are not the best.  Nor is pineapple.  Today's blend had baby spinach, rocket, 2 frozen bananas, 1/2 pineapple and the juice of an orange.  It was really delicious, but chewy.  You don't get that lovely smoooooooth smoothie that you do with peaches and softer fruit.  Apples are a bit the same, but yesterday's was nice.  I'm just really fond of the velvety smoothness that peaches give the gs.

But, it is autumn, and one must adapt to the seasons.  I would LOVE to one with muscatels, because they are so exquisite at the moment.  But the last time I did one with red globe grapes, I was picking pips out of my mouth, or chewing the tough little suckers.  cheesy  It would also mean pond scum colour!

I might stock up on oranges this weekend, and try just a banana and o.j. gs.  I used to have a gurgly tummy from mixing orange juice and bananas, but no more!  And it really is the loveliest combination, as Joss has mentioned several times.  Of course, you won't be able to do the orange thing because of allergies, but what about limes???  Yum.

Don't be envious Miss Giggles! The peaches were disappointing, quite flavourless. It must be the end of season thing. Same thing with some end of season plums I got at the same time. But the peaches did give that smooth consistency you mention to the smoothie today.

I can't taste the maca in the GS? I use a teaspoon to a big blenderful (which is about 3 big smoothies to see me through the day). It gives me a boost, which has helped with cutting down my coffee to one cup a day (can't stop completely til I'm off work next week, as I get a migraine and end up in bed. Guess how I'm spending my holiday  huh).

Adjusting to the seasons will be hard for me, I think. I've always been a big summer fruit fan, and eat loads of fruit in summer. In winter, I've eaten a shamefully low amount of fruit. Can't eat oranges (love limes and they don't affect me, must try that in a GS!) and have never really liked apples, but they taste much better now I'm eating raw so I'm eating lots of them now. In the past its always just been occasional bananas and pears.

My boss is eating so much meat! Big slabs of the stuff. It's freaky. And she's lost a lot of weight quite quickly. Those sort of results make people look positively at these sort of diets, without considering the longer term health results and the other effects you allude to  rolleyes

Oh, today's green smoothie was 2 peaches, 2 frozen bananas, a pear, bunch of beet greens, handful of rocket, and maca powder. I'm not sold on the rocket I'm afraid. Had basil in one last week and it rocked though.

Missy M,

I have 3 peaches sitting in my fridge.  They look like 'little old men' of the peach world.  cheesy  The season is gone.  But, I am determined to use them tomorrow morning in my gs.  They still smell like peaches, so that makes me happy.

I put Maca in today.  You're right - 1 teaspoon in over a litre of gs, and it's barely able to be tasted.  I'll add each day now.

I too am a summer fruit gal, but in the ebb and flow, we must embrace the new season fruit.  Pears are delicious in green smoothies - really ripe and juicy ones.

Perhaps you could do a sweet, smooth green (baby spinach or butter lettuce) with bananas, lime and basil.  That sounds nice.  Today I had a salad dressing of orange juice and coriander which was exquisite.  Maybe lime and coriander for a little kick?

I adore rocket, so no issues in my gs, but I don't do just rocket, I balance with baby spinach, else it is too peppery and strong.  Maybe use beet greens OR rocket, not both.  They are both quite bitter greens, so it may be better to use beet greens + baby spinach or lettuce.  That might work better for you.  I'm using 4-5 chinese broccoli leaves at a time, no more, and always with a sweeter green, unless I am craving a real 'green' kick.

I think I should just go and move in with the Boutenko family.  I still have the most serious crush on green smoothies.  I could just talk about them all night.

But, in the words of Farmer Hoggett.. "That'll do pig.  That'll do."

The peaches from work were pooh.  They ended up in the bin.  They were like rock cakes.  The season has gone.

But, it's not all doom and gloom.....

I just made a gs for dinner, and all I can say is oh my!

Blender full of baby spinach (about 3/4 full actually)
Dash of water
Juice of one orange
2 x frozen bananas
Handful of raspberries
Bit more water (we all know the drill  cheesy)

Oh my.  The colour is initially like eggplant, but then it seems to settle into a nice khaki colour.

I was deliberating whether to add the raspberries - I bought them to do a raspberry chia pudding.  But, I am mighty glad I decided to sacrifice a handful to the blender.

It is outrageously good.

mmm raspberries...sounds like a goody misstress giggles...will be giving this one a go...don't mind the odd spot of khaki colored gs...i find using lots of chard gives it that dense green color too...and that's seriously good too...

Today's green smoothie was the yummiest yet:

Baby bok choi
Basil
Frozen bananas
Frozen strawberries
The very last of the peaches... sob

MMMM!

I picked up a new heavy duty commercial blender on sale today. Not a vitamix I'm afraid (can't afford that for a long long while), but it has 1000w of power and 5 year warranty and demolished raw carrots into a smooth smooth soup within seconds tonight. I can't wait to try it on my GS tomorrow morning. No more waiting 5 minutes for my old food processor all the while hoping the motor doesn't blow up! No more green bits between my teeth!

Ooooh Missy M,

How exciting!  I just LOVE new kitchen appliances and bits!  Especially when you can smile with confidence again!  cheesy

I sob with you on the peaches, but another summer will roll around, and they'll be back!

Your gs sounds scrumptious.  Mine was very simple today - baby spinach, basil and banana.  It was delightful.

Enjoy whipping up tasty green smoothies in your new blender.  And on sale *sigh*.

It IS exciting. In fact I'm going to bed now so I can get up early to make my first green smoothie in the new blender!!!  cheesy I might try your simple idea to christen it, because despite the excitement of the new toy, my pears haven't softened enough yet.

Night!

Neet,

Seems like you and I, with the change of seasons, are both venturing into new waters.  Today I made a very interesting discovery.

Today's gs:

Blender full of baby spinach
2 large frozen bananas
Juice of one orange
1 exquisitely ripe Bosch pear
Handful of dill
Water

Now, here's the thing - I used dill on a bit of a whim, but as it turns out dill was just amazing.

I think it was the orange juice that grabbed dill by the hands, and they danced and danced....

Hard to describe the taste, but there were definite high notes of dill and orange.  I'm going to experiment more with dill and fruit.  It seems unlikely, but they are delicious dance partners.

Yum. I'm definitely going to repeat it.
