after posting my nana alternatives request the craving became too much so i blended up a handful of spin, the center leaves of a head of red leaf, water, frozen blueberries and 5 or 6 dates. looked like a very thick raspberry sauce and tasted like chocolate pudding! Sam had some and said it tasted like chocolate milk... very good cheesy  hubby finally ran down to the local grocery store and brought home conventional nanas (3 nice sized bunches which were completely gone in 12 hours rolleyes). he also brought home a huge container of baby spinach! i told my friend at the hfs about the nanas- she said there's nothing wrong with the occasional emergency nana... lol
thanks for the tips on nana replacements smiley i am now rich in nanas (took every yellow one off the shelf- mwuhahahaha!!! **ooo, i am so maniacal evil***.)
after consuming almost nothing but gs yesterday (the craving was insatiable!) i am almost replenished... at least, i must be as my morning gs today satisfied me. it was:
5 large leaves romaine
2c water
1c strawberries
3 nanas

Jen- did yr fr nanas, fr berries, pears & greens turn out very thick? it sounds like a delicious combo but i'm afraid it may kill my blender... again... lol

Neet I have not taste Rocket before.  Mustard green has a very sharp taste to it I guess you can say spicy.  I have to get use to it maybe it has a bitter taste I should say

I had a bunch of mustard greens the other week, and was tempted to use them in a green smoothie, but got scared. Used them in some Asian style salads instead. They are fiery! Neet, they're almost like having hot mustard.

Today's GS was:

Some un-named greens from the Vietnamese grocer
Autumn plums
Bananas (I know, I'll try to experiment without them soon, I promise!)
Strawberries
Coriander

Good combo. I have no idea what the Asian greens were though. They looked more like a weed than anything else. Lady in the shop just shrugged her shoulders when I asked what they were (they probably don't have an English equivalent). It's the second time I've bought un-known greens from the Vietamese store, and both times they've been nice. The last ones I got looked/tasted like a variation of watercress.

Yeah, it was definitely exciting making a mystery concoction with ingredients I'd never seen before & didn't know the name of! I did have a test nibble first of the greens first, before committing them to the blender, to make sure it wasn't like 1000x strength chicory or mustard greens though.

Brings me to thinking about edible weeds - foraging for these for green smoothies (yes, I've just been inspired by my copy of Green for Life!). I wouldn't know where to start though.

MM - that made me laugh (in empathy).  I got a few 'bush tucker' books out of the library a few months ago, determined to set off with my swag and scissors!  cheesy

I have a very 'romantic' view of things sometimes, and saw myself harvesting greens etc. in the Bondi dunes.  Alas, I lost interest, determined it was a leedle too difficult and went back to the fruit & veg shop!  cheesy

Ever the dreamer.....

Great idea Neet - we need at least two people to wrestle with the book and compare the photograph to the wild green!  cheesy

The only books I could get had very few photos - just little pencil sketches.  Part of the reason it was all too hard was the necessary faith in my ability to match a pencil drawing with a real plant correctly.  All I could see before me was potentially my first stomach pumping!  cheesy

Oh Miss G & Neet, I'm in stitches at the vision of the three of us, with swags, scissors and guidebook of dubious accuracy, foraging in the Bondi dunes, then being carted off by ambulance for a stomach pumping. Followed by headlines in the news 'Three 'Raw-Food Vegans' Hospitalised After Eating Poisonous Weeds'. Hehehe. Definitely would need Joss & Brett to save us from our doomed exclamations of 'ooh, that one looks nice, let's try that in our green smoothie'!

Just as well there's weird greens a plenty in the Asian grocers to satisfy my desire for foraging for unknown plants.
