I was prescribed an oral contraceptive (Diane 35) and Roaccutane for my acne.  Whilst my skin has cleared up now, I have big regrets for taking both of these drugs.

My skin is now dry and I have problems with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Unfortuately I am still taking Diane 35 after being on it for 10 years.  Twice I have tried to stop taking Diane 35 realizing it is not healthy and wanting to pursue a holistic healthy raw lifestyle, but discontinuing Diane 35 has resulted in massive hair loss which corrects itself with new growth after going back on Diane 35.

I have seen doctors, but feel that it is not their specialty by their diagnosis of "hair loss is caused by stress" another's diagnosis "your father is bald, so your case is likely to be heredity, and only last week I prescribed Diane 35 to another lady suffering form hair loss".

I personally feel Diane 35 is responsible for my hair loss and imbalance in my body so neither of these diagnoses helped me.

I have come across information which I don't completly understand so don't quote me, but could explain the hair loss when I stop taking Diane 35.  Our bodies naturally produce progesterone, I have read Diane 35 has a synthetic form of progesterone in it that stops your body from making it's own natural progesterone.

When progesterone levels fall, the body increases it's production of the adrenal cortical steroid, androstenedione an alternative precursor for the production of other adrenal cortical hormones.  Androstenedione conveys some androgenic (male -like) properties, in this case, male pattern hair loss.

I am still in search of a Doctor or health profesional who could give me answers to this problem and somehow help correct imbalance so I can discontinue taking Diane 35 for my full head of hair.

If anybody could point me in the right direction, I'd be much appreciative.

Hi Blue Nelly

OK, first up the disclaimer that obviously we're not medically trained doctors and can't prescribe anything or promise any kind of cure. What we can do is pass on information we've come across from our experiences around the health scene.

- First up stress is often the catchall for anything that's not in the textbook and often isn't even specific enough to distinguish between emotional stress (EG working too hard at something you hate) and physical stress (EG being on drugs that disable your bodies natural functioning).

- It's pretty common sense that when making any changes to how your body works chemically and hormonally need to be taken cautiously and slowly. Radical changes quickly often seem to accompany massive detox results.

- Maca powder has been reported by many (most notably Shazzie and David Wolfe) to be excellent at balancing hormonal balances. Which may be worth researching more (we're currently trying to get more Maca into the country, but I know we've seen others selling it so it's selling somewhere).

- Hair loss are often linked to mineral deficiencies. Foods such as dark greens, wheatgrass and concentrated super foods (spirulina, cracked cell chlorella etc) are known to be excellent sources of minerals.

You may choose to ask your doctor about the recommended procedure for discontinuing Diane 35 gradually and experiment with combining some of the foods mentioned above the this protocol. Whatever you choose to do though we would suggest that you consult with a healthcare professional well trained in holistic health and nutrition. If any such professional would like to recommend themselves then they can email us at forums@raw-pleasure.com.au and we'll happily pass on their info to you.

All the best and let us know what you find!

Piers,

Maca is sold at the Hippocrates Health retreat in Mudgeeraba near the Gold Coast.

Give Ronald a call at Hippocrates. Their website is http://www.hippocrates.com.au

They sell lots of interesting things, like, raw dulce seaweed, raw coconut oil.

I hope this helps.

Ive had and used Diane before, until i found out what they dont tell u about the oill (i think it was in a wellbeing magazine) and ive been off it since. I was prescribed it for my skin as well, it just scares me how those pills play with ur hormones and ur body.

Piers

Thanking you for putting it out there for healthcare professionals trained in holistic health and nutrition to contact.  Hopefully we will hear from one soon.

Weaning me off Diane 35 is a good idea to suggest trying.  If my hair doesn't fall out during this process, that would be fantastic!  That would then mean that it is not a hereditary problem that I would have to live with, which is my biggest fear.

No problem, hope it helps!

I just need to reiterate that I would *strongly* recommend combining some form of remineralisation as you wean your body off the drugs though. If there's previous hair loss when unnatural chemicals are removed then something is obviously out of balance (for the moment). Any help you can give your body in getting what it needs to rebalance can only be a good thing...

Also worth remembering is that while genetics obviously play a role in our health, that when the environment and mindset are favourable that these "genetic" weaknesses rarely become active.

Last but not least, we both know of cases where pets put on radically healthier diets (or should I say weaned off radical poisons) have lost most of their hair, only to grow it back healthier than ever. I'm loathe to put everything down to detox every time, and obviously you're human, but we're all mammals and often detox can be just that... Something to think about!

Anyway, thanks for your bravery for sharing your concerns. We get to talk to many very people more knowledgable than us in many fields. We'll certainly let you know if we can find out anything relevant.

All the best,

Piers

Hi
I was just reading about the problem with Diane 35 and hair loss. I have read a lot about the topic of progesterone deficiency. Dr John Lee has written books and given many talks.  Very interesting and worth reading (Sandra Cabot also advocates its use I think) There are several Doctors who have wholistic medical Centres in Sydney who use natural progesterone cream made from wild yams. It is totally natural but the Australian Gov requires a prescription. ( I found out the names of Doctors by ringing the Chemist  I found out was making a very good form of the cream) One of my friends had severe osteoporosis and the cream has enabled her to build bone density-wow! Proper diet of course is an essential part of the treatment. I used it for menopausal symptoms before I went 100% raw. It works!!! I had to go off it to have pathology tests and so far the raw diet is keeping symptoms pretty much at bay. With all of these things you have to do your own research, so that when you consult a Doctor you're not completely in the dark.

Hope this is helpful!

Hi Bern

Thanks for your post, I found it very interesting, I love to look into the information you have given some more.  I beleive you are spot on with needing to do your own research when consulting a doctor, so as not to be in the dark with any problem you are experiencing.

Could you recommend which book or books you favour to read on the subject of progesterone deficiency.  And also I'd love to read the info you have read on the problem with Diane 35 and hair loss.  I am also interested in is the name of the Chemist and progesterone cream that you think is good and if you know of a good Doctor or any other recommendations you may have.

Thanking you in advance, there are quite a few requests there.
