aw, Joss, i didn't realize the nanas were still sketchy in Oz! my sympathies...

Anna they have been in short supply and expensive since the cyclone in March. They are still $12.95 per kilo on average, but they should be back to normal in the next 3 months.

Everyone on this board is sick of me lamenting the lack of bananas.

Hey but I am fruitarian and eat mainly fresh fruit and vegetables.

i completely understand! when we our nana-less, chaos reigns... the boys ignore the fridge and watch the basket like vultures waiting for something to perish. when we bring home a bag they are gone in a day or 2. we tend to go through a half case or more every week. thankfully, they are only us$.69/lb @ the hfs or us$.79/lb down the road and the grocery store- and that's for organic.
(oooo, not showing off! just stating a fact... if i could i'd send a few cases yr way!)

1c almonds
1/2c shredded coconut
1 large banana
raisins (optional)

grind until fine the nuts and coconut in a fp. add the banana and process until smooth. stir in the raisins. drop on mesh dehydrator screens by the spoonful, flatten slightly and dehydrate for 8hrs.

*Ian came up with this recipe all by himself! we actually forgot to add the raisins. even his cooked-food grandparents loved them  smiley

My parents are here in a couple of weeks and hope I can make a 'lasting' impression especially on my Dad who is desperately overweight and extremely stressed.
I was going to cater to their diet some but have since decided that there are so many delicious raw concoctions I can make for him( and Mum, of course) that they can fit in with our diet and I will be doing them a favour. I hope he will feel good for it too. The sad thing is, then they go to my sisters' house and they will cook for them!!! They will have opportunity to see the difference in how they feel physically afterwards, I guess.
My dad sooo needs the motivation and he would be right. He has a world full of determination already just needing redirection. Positive energy and thinking for good toward them.

Rabbit - I can sympathise! both of my parents and their respective partners could use a raw overhaul, but get very defensive when i raise the issue, so its great that you can at least talk with your folks about it! Good luck with everything!

Thanks kt. I couldn't exactly say I can talk to my dad about it but he knows he can't change my thinking and will eat what I put out for him. My mum will listen to some of what I say but is still caught in the 'meat for protein and doctors for ills' mentality. Having said that though she did at one stage just eat fruit for her breakfast. They also don't eat as much red meat anymore, so I guess that is something and I am grateful for that smiley.

1 1/2c walnuts
2 apples, cored & chopped
handful raisins
1/2-1tsp cinnamon (optional)

grind nuts & optional cinnamon into a "flour" in the fp. add apples and puree until smooth. stir in raisins. drop onto mesh screens by the rounded spoonful (flatten a bit) & dehydrate until desired texture.

we dehydrated these for 6-12 hrs. we couldn't help but start tasting at 6hrs... there were 2 left at the 12hr mark. lol

1 banana
1/2c frozen blueberries
2Tbs chia seeds
water

in a bowl combine berries and seeds. pour in water (just enough to cover- i used about 1/3c) and let soak 30 minutes.
blend the berries/seeds mixture with banana until smooth. enjoy!

*i think soaked dates in place of the nana would work well, maybe even coconut meat. i made this 2x this morning as the boys requested more and i didn't even get to try the first batch!
if anyone tries this w/fresh blueberries (blended then combined w/the seeds perhaps?) i'd love to hear how it comes out!

i feel for you, Rabbit... it is so hard to watch people you love and look/ed up to age so rapidly on cooked. i remember my father as a very tolerant man when i was younger- now, he is rarely open to other's opinions/ideas. he is overweight, as is my mother. he has high blood pressure. he had his adenoids (sp?) removed. she had part of her thyroid removed and now relies on meds. her doctor is talking about doing the same surgery on her as my father had and she says she refuses to undergo that. i like hearing her refuse medical "advice" but know that she won't do anything about it otherwise.
i wish you much luck in your experiment  cheesy let us know the outcome!

thanks, Neet. we've been doing a lot of puddings lately. the boys had blueberry again yesterday for breaky while i made pear (recipe follows!) for Dan and i. we bought a case of org. nanas yesterday so the boys had banana pudding for breaky this morning (made w/tahini instead of chia). Ian's made 2 trays of his cookies today, minus coconut and with the raisins. and i've been freezing those that are hella ripe. nana wealth is good! since it's cooling off here, we'll probably be easing up on the nana consumption... not eliminating, by any means, but definitely cutting down. at least, we'll try! lol
