Hey Smiley

I read that towards the end of your first trimester you may experience acid reflux/heart burn, and, until about a week and a half ago, I hadnt experienced it so i figured i was free of this annoying preggie symptom!

Besides eating smaller meals more often, do you guys have any ideas on how to minimise heartburn?

Gee kt I have never had this at this stage, only near the end when room is just not available for much more than baby!!lol. Hope you find some answers. I would be considering everything you ingest as to its makeup to try and pinpoint the acidity factor once the food is in your system. Cheers

I used to suffer with horrid heartburn and indigestion every night when I was young. I think it was because I drank with my meals and often drank cool drinks throughout the day.

Once I read my first raw book, I gave up drinking with meals and I haven't experienced heartburn ever again.

I even remember having heartburn as a child.

In my last trimester with my first baby I had bladder problems because my baby was pressing on my bladder. I experienced constant seepage and was always slightly damp. Towards the end it got worse, but I never experienced anything like that ever again. Just because someone else had a certain problem really does not mean much in my opinion. Thankfully we are all unique. If you don't gain too much weight, a lot of these problems will not occur.

Hi,

I only had heartburn once (when I stuffed myself silly) before I was pregnant, but for all four pregnancies I had it on occasions.  Sometimes I  would even get it on an empty stomach.   About the only thing that was really effective was making a chamomile, peppermint and fennel tea and I would chew on the fennel seeds to provide some relief as well.  I know tea is not 'raw' but it's probably a better option than antacids and when the heartburn is really strong you don't really care about anything but some instant relief!

I am wondering whether foods high in magnesium (cacao, spinach, almonds for instance) would be helpful becasue antacids are generally based on magnesium...just a thought.

Peace cheesy

hello, gorgeous preggy goddess Katie!
Blueberry is right on with the fennel tea/seeds. herb teas are easily made in the sun and typically last a couple days in the fridge (if you don't drink it all first  smiley).
peppermint can be a bit problematic if overused but tastes delicious in a gs (just water, nanas, and the fresh leaves!).
almonds are super for heartburn! slowly chewed, i found a handful extremely helpful when i had preggers heartburn. my midwives were unhappy with the fats and told me to "just use tums/rolaids as those also give you the calcium you need"... can you believe it?
i truly believe anyone in the med field who deals with patients needs to have some knowledge of nutrition...

hey kt, as well as the great suggestions already made, you could try some slippery elm powder from a health food shop, it is fantastic for soothing, healing and protecting the digestive system because of its demulscent and mucilaginous qualities...   also aloe vera is a great mucilage   x

Jen's righto on the slippery elm and aloe but use wee bitty doses as they both tend to do quite the cleansing on a preggy womon!
i've already packed my herbal, otherwise, i'd quote from it. i highly recommend susun weed's herbal for the childbearing year.

which reminds me...

dandelion is great for you preggies too! mix some fresh leaves in with yr salads/wraps. i love making a salad with dandelion leaves, cucumber and apple cider vinegar (and maybe a touch of olive oil...)

if yr over the reflux issues use a couple Tbs of the vinegar, otherwise, stick to a few tsp...

Just an update - I stopped leaving so long between meals and have cut down on my fluid intake when i am eating and bye-bye reflux  cool i know if i leave more then an hour or two between eating something I'll occasionally get a bit of heartburn again. So i think if i stick with eating snackies here and there i should be all good!
thanks for all the great suggestions everyone!!!!!!!!!
