Cup weekend.... the public holiday is on Tuesday 7 November.  I am taking off Friday to Tuesday off.  And so is my husband... he is detoxing.  I'm making him do fruits/vegies for as long as he can so he can see the difference it makes.  He needs to loose weight and clean himself out a bit.  But he's not ready for water fasting.  So I'm doing it Harvey Diamonds way for him... Mono Dieting.

Anyway, I will call the farms and find out if they are open... and give you guys the details.  I can't wait.

Hi everyone,

WOW - I'm not alone !!!  I thought that most of Australia's raw foodies lived in the northern regions...

So, as you have probably guessed - I'm also a raw foodie AND living in Melbourne !  I've been raw about five months now (at about 90%) and so far, am loving it.

Please count me in as part of a get-together and berry picking day - as it would be great to meet you all.

Elise

Hello again everyone!

Welcome to the Raw Melbourne group elise.  We are all new and getting to know each other so you are just in time.  Tell us about yourself.  What part of Melb are you in?

Strawberry Farm is open on cup day!!!!  They charge $6 for the first half kilo of strawberries and then charge by the kilo after.  You can purchase already picked strawberries there if you want to as well.  You are allowed to eat and pick at the same time!  Although they don't recommend it.  I will be leaving with a few free kilos inside me!

Strawberry info:
Nutritional Table

1 cup (or 149gm) of strawberries contains:

45 calories (kcal)
1 gm protein
10.5 gm carbohydrate
0.6 gm fat
1.6 gm fibre
84.5 mg vitamin C
0.1 mg thiamin
0.1 gm riboflavin
0.4 gm niacin
0.1 mg vitamin B6
0.1 mcg Vitamin B12
26.4 mcg folic acid
2 mg sodium
21 mg calcium
0.6 mg iron
247 mg potassium
0.2 mg zinc

Here is what Sunnyridge Strawberry farm also have available:

Cherries
The areas of Main Ridge and the neighbouring Red Hill are traditional cherry farming areas with a deep loam soil that is perfect for growing great cherries. Sunny Ridge has its own small cherry orchard, but also stocks locally grown cherries during the cherry season. Available by the kilo and by the case they showcase the best flavours of the region. Different varieties (such as sweet black cherries and the traditional red cherry varieties) come in at different times of the season. Sunny Ridge also offers cherries as a 'pick your own'.

Raspberries
Freshly picked raspberries are available from the end of December until Easter. Sunny Ridge sells field grown raspberries as well as hothouse raspberries. This means that our supply is less susceptible to weather damage. The varieties that we grow produce large flavoursome fruit - perfect for a summer pudding or as a treat straight from the punnet. Sunny Ridge raspberries are also available as a Pick Your Own fruit.

Stone Fruits
There is a bounty of stone fruit available at Sunny Ridge in summer including peaches, plums, apricots and nectarines. General Manager Mick's years of experience in the fruit and vegetable business means that he knows when varieties are to at the peak of their season. Contacts throughout Australia send the best of their crops and the flavours are exceptional. Tropical mangoes and rockmelons feature alongside locally grown stone fruits. Perfect to compliment Sunny Ridge produce!

Avocadoes
Grown in the relatively cool climate of Main Ridge, Sunny Ridge avocadoes develop a lovely dense nutty texture.
Two varieties are grown on the property in a 10 acre plantation. Hass; the variety that darken as they mature, and Reed; a thin skinned, smooth, round, green variety.
Avocadoes are unique in that they fruit all the time but the fruit doesn’t ripen until after it is picked. This means they can be harvested throughout the year as required. The cool climate allows the fruit to develop a superior flavour.

Address:
Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm
244 Shands Road
Main Ridge
Victoria

WHAT TIME WOULD EVERYONE LIKE TO GO?  How about between 10 and 10.30 arrival time???  Berries for lunch!!!

Is everyone able to get there okay???  They are open from 9am to 5pm so we have all day and there are beaches near by and also by the look of it alot of other fruits.  Large farm I guess.

Anna

There is apparently strawberry picking in the Swan Valley. I find numerous references to it online!

And how does pick your own blueberries sound? Everyone in the USA and Australia (and some other countries) can find details of pick your own farms near you at: http://www.pickyourown.org/australia.htm

WOW!

12 should be fine Paul... I might get there by 11 as I would like to indulge for breakfast,  morning tea and lunch in one.

I will be going there this friday with my family to try it out.

They have said that they sell all sorts of other fruits... raspberry and cherry picking doesn't start until late Dec though.

If the weather is really nice we could take our strawberries to the local beach in Dromana.  It's really nice there.  I go there throughout summer.  But we can see what happens with our strawberry picking.. it may take longer than we think... as time flies when you're having fun.   kiss

Can everyone else confirm arrival times and we'll all just work in with the average.

Helen.... How do I know what you look like... I already know what Paul looks like from his photo... can you give me a description of yourself and maybe the car you will be driving.

I'm not sure which car I'm taking yet... but I may be in either a little small red 2 door... or a Land Rover Discovery.  Depends on the day.  And you know what I look like.  afro

After going strawberry picking on Sat with my family... and got wet as it rained while we were picking!  We thoroughly enjoyed our fresh experience... I cannot believe the taste difference ... and we also got cherries.

Because Dromana has a great beach and is right near the picking farms... we will be spending alot of weekends there... so if anyone is planning on going... just let me know as we can co-ordinate times.  It's good to know when the weather is nice... as Tuesday gone was not nice weather.  So no one went.

I would like to go again this weekend.  If we do, it would be Sunday.  If anyone else is going ... I will probably try to be there around 12ish.  Hopefully the weather is sunny.  I will be picking at least 2 kilos this time as one and a half of strawberries and one kilo of cherries didn't last 24 hours!

We will then go down to the park at the beach for some sun.

Blueberry... if you want to meet up at Jells park with the kids we can organise that one weekend.  We can picnic there.

Paul... how was the races on Tuesday?  Did you place any bets?  Just pick a NZ horse and you'll win every time!

Anyway, will hopefully catch up with some of you at the farms.  PS... they are not cheap!  Cherries are $14 a kilo and Strawberries were $8 a kilo I think.  Dec could be cheaper maybe.  Worth it though.  So tasty.

Anna, and Helen,

Sorry I didnt meet up with you last weekend...  I got home drenched and feeling sad and sorry for myself at around 2pm... I thought it was probably all over, so I didnt bother coming down...

It was a shame because Amanda (my partner) and I couldnt stop talking about strawberry picking all week!!!

Yes, lets try and organise something else again soon.

xxpaul
