What is the raw vegan thoughts on the GI???

I had a Rugby player give me advise on Friday... and it was that because of my high metabolism I need to get more food that have a low GI.

Is this necessary?  Is it really a concern to monitor the GI for a raw vegan?  huh

And is fruit a high GI???  I would imagine it is...

What about greens?  Are they considered high or low?  I know Oats are low GI.  What about root vegetables?

You will find different views on GI with regard to raw vegan from what I have seen. Low IN basic terms high GI is a quick release of energy into the body and low GI is a slower release of energy and so can help you feel full for longer. High GI is particualrly good for restoring fuel after exercising but also throughout the day. Raw is good for you low or high GI - determine how YOU feel after eatingn certain foods and use that as your guide.

Fruits with low-GI values include: apples, blackberries, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, oranges, peaches, pears, raspberries and strawberries.

High-GI fruit includes: cantaloupe, dates, honeydew melon, raisins and water melon.

Other fruits are intermediate-GI foods.

As stated on one web site "The good news is, most fresh fruit has a high nutritional value and therefore even if higher on the glycemic index should be part of a healthy diet, especially if you are trying to lose weight. Eating more fruit is associated with improved insulin sensitivity, better glycemic control and a reduced risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease"

There is lots of information on teh web and I recommend you do some reading if yu are interested but some of my thoughts for you.......

High GI is good when you need a quick energy source such as before or after training

Fruits and vegetables even if high GI do not give you the sugar spike that processed foods of high GI will give you so differentiate between the too

Notive how you feel after eating certain foods and really listen to your body.

Hope this helps a little.

read one gi chart and it will be different from another..

show me a person with body fat issues or sugar metabolism issues on a low fat raw vegan lifestyle.

i havent met one.

no wholefood digests easier than fruit.
no food on the planet serves an athlete greater than fruit.

give me anyone with hypoglycemia, diabeties, candida and put em on a fruit and greens lifestyle and they will thrive.

im passionate on nutrition. i will talk to anyone, anywhere , anytime about health. it wakes me up and keeps me up to all hours. i thrive on meeting new people daily and hearing their experiences, i cant get enough!

and i thrive on helping people make simple lifestyle choices that profoundly help themselves, the animals and the planet.

i dont just eat for me, i eat for everyone else too.

Apparently a doctor with a nutritional interest put my father on a low GI diet, and told him to eat unripe bananas as they were low GI,  and to avoid ripe bananas (high GI) at all costs.

Hhmmm!!

The people that first coined the term GI Index in their research paper have stated that they had no intention of having it used as it is. And research has even shown that it's really not a valid way to 'diet; or to plan your meals. However it's become a popular diet method, and seems to have a life of it's own now. Hopefully you can help him discover that ripe bananas are good for him! As are all types of ripe fruits (yes even though they are high GI).

Cheers,
Sheryl

I guess hi GI is simply alot of energy within the food that's easily accessible.  So therefore I guess that's a good thing.  It's people who don't eat enough of it that find they need more energy and think that low GI is just more convenient.

I'm happy to continue on my way with fruit and greens.

I don't think it's worth another thought.  Thankyou all for your words on the subject.

facts on paper are one thing, how we truly feel is another.

science cant even recreate a blade of grass. im grateful for some scientific advances, yet always fall back to mother nature when im in doubt of what is opitimum for human health and fitness.

a rusty nail  is a great source of iron...iron pills are basically chopped rusty nails.. next they will have us eating shredded pet animals for protein..oh thats right, they already are..

low gi, high gi..one paper says this, one says that.. keep people confused and then pump em full of marketing hype and get a few drugged up stars to smile n pose and point in the direction to go. as when humans are in doubt of which way to go, we follow the heard..

all we have to do is follow our heart. take a moment to reflect and question what is encouraged and by whom.
