Hey there everyone,

My name is Alethea, i am 21, a vegan and have been for nearly 9 years. 2 years back i gave the raw vegan diet a go, but after a couple of months it all fell apart (i think it may have something to do with the fact it was winter, lack of supplies and need a dehydrater!) I have put on a fair bit of weight lately and have been eating quite poorly and i have been quite depressed. I remember how fantastic i felt in my second month raw and i am itching to feel that great again! I am super keen to give it another go! I find it hard to find the range of organic fresh produce where i live and this also contibuted to my last attempt failing.

I was wondering where everyone finds their calcium and iron, (i remember having trouble finding enough dark greens!)

Is there a resource somewhere for raw foodists listing the best sources to meet daily needs? or some sort of meal plans/diaries?

I have had a looked through some journals on here and everyone is so inspirational!

I cant wait to try some of the superfoods in the shop!!

Thanks for a great website!
Alethea

What about fresh organic Wheatgrass and other green Juices?

You can have plenty of minerals and vitamins all trough the years and grow it at home in proper container... all you need is organic Wheatgrain,  sproutin bag and soil...

Just one 30ml shot of freshly squeezed Wheatgrass can be the equivalent to over 1kg of raw vegetable in nutritional value (depends on the minerals you have or put in the soil)...

take a look here in the Web for more information:

Hi Alethea, great to see yet another WA girl on the boards. As others have said, greens are amazing for pretty much everything but so is fruit - just stuff yourlsef full of amazing greens and fruit (organic if you can get it).
Welcome to the boards and hopefully we can meet up some time in the not too distant future!

Alethea I eat conventional fruits and greens. I get good quality greens from my little local fruit and veggie shop. Funnily enough my recent blood tests came back as normal even though I had imagined that I had some defiencies.

Every other animal doesn't worry about where they are getting their nutrients and that's where we have strayed from our natural diet. We worry too much about getting enough calcium etc, instead of enjoying our food and eating what our body needs.

The only advice I can give is to eat a wide variety of foods and include a source of raw fats. This may include a few nuts. I have started eating three walnuts daily and a teaspoon of ground flax seeds for essential fatty acids. You don't need to eat a lot. Just eat some so that we can asorb the fat soluable nutrients.

Freedom I agree. WA seems to be the raw food centre of Australia.

We are rockin' over here, aren't we? I just want to add my full support to what Joss said, which is so very true... watch a nature documentary and look at the wildebeest. Does it try and calculte how much cellulose is in the grass it's eating? When the lion comes along and eats the wildebeest, does it fuss about how much protein and iron it will receive from the meal? Of course not.
You should not allow the idea of nutrients, vitamins minerals etc to slip from your mind totally, but don't get really hung up on it either.  smiley

So true Joss & Freedom, we do get so hung up about daily nutritional requirements instead of listening to our bodies and feeding it what it is crying out for.

Welcome and enjoy your journey!!

Hey there! This is not a problem I have had but I know others who have. Many people find that when they initially go raw they eat big handfuls of dried fruit and nuts throughout the day but that is not so good on digestion. Personally salads don't fill me up anywhere near as much as fruit - for dinner the other night I ate a little over a kilo of grapes and I was FULL! You try eating a kilo of any fruit and then let me know if you're still hungry, lol!  cheesy
Eating really close to going to bed is also not the best idea and will probably result in you waking up feeling like you hardly slept. This is because digesting food uses A LOT of energy so if the body is busy digesting a huge meal then it won't be able to truly rest.

There is also a whole other concept that would relate here, that being that true hunger is experienced in the mouth/throat not stomach and the feeling you get in your stomach doesn't actually mean you need to eat, etc, but i don't have time just now  smiley. HOpe this has helped!

Yes Joss. A little fat is essential for the fat soluble vitamins, hormones etc for sure..... it doesn't seem to be something that shows up straight away but over time can be quite detrimental.

I always think of how fat the population has become on so called 'low fat food' mmmm makes me think!

Trouble is it has been so inground in our minds that it's a hard one to let go of.

Alethea congratulations on being raw.
Great advice by Jocelyn.
All the vitamin and minerals are there in the plant foods.
Eat lots of fruits, vegetables and greens.

don·t go hungry eat plenty.

today when I woke up I decided just for today I am mono eating.
I am eating an 8.500 kilogram watermelon.
Is nearly 3:00 pm and that watermelon is dissappearing in front of my eyes and my tummy.
