Hi all!

Just another curios question I am thinking about:
If I juice nettles: what about their toxin within their tiny little hairs? They contain Acetylcholine, Histamine, and Serotonin.

BTW -
an excellent link on nettles: http://www.bio.davidson.edu/people/kabernd/seminar/2001/home/mad/nettles/home.html
and on "Contact-Poisonous Plants of the World": http://mic-ro.com/plants/index.html

bye

Hi Andreas,

I'll have to check these links out. Harvesting and juicing nettles is very high on my "to do" list. I'm in the UK where nettles abound but I'm yet to try consuming them.

Do you mix the juice with anything?

Can you use nettles in green smoothies?

Thanks,

Hi ggx!

Principally you can mix the juice with anything and of course you can use them in smoothies... As I wrote they are contact poisonous and the question still is unanswered: what happens when you juice it and drink it. Will it  interfer with your body in a negative way?
All main poisonous ingridients (Acetylcholine, Histamine, and Serotonin) are substances that we also have in our body...

Since I came to know about nettles I love - unless I have to touch them... ;-)  They are one of the best tonics available, almost as good as ginseng. You can use the whole plant as well as the seeds. The nettles conatin an extremly high content of iron. So if you want to mix add some alfalfa sprouts because they are extremly rich in vit. C and thats what you need to absorb iron properly.

On the other hand: every plant/fruit/vegetable is a remedy on its own. Therefore too much might do harm. Kepp that in mind!

Bye

i believe victoria boutenko had mentioned stinging nettles in her green for life book.  i'd like to try make a green smoothie with them once the weather warms up.  i understand that they're inflammatory so people with joint problems would benefit
