a fruit ive only discovered since being in costa rica. the plantain is just a banana variety that get as long and thick as your fore-arm.

when ripe they are black and the meat is orange.

they are twice as caloric dense as bananas and sickly sweet. amazing!

yesterday we blended up 10kg with the vita mix and filled jugs and guzzled the sweet granular textured smoothy to refuel our worn muscles.

plantain power smoothy. a rarity and never forgotten!

ah hahahaha... when i read the title of your post i thought you meant the herb plantain (a.k.a ribwort) which i have put in a smoothie before with a few of it's wild green friends.  cheesy I'm such a ditz. Thanks DR, I have actually always wondered about those sorts of plantain.

oh, i had no idea that plantains were sweet.  i heard they were starchy so that's why you have to cook them to sweeten them, something like that.  i pass by plantains all the time in a local market.  perhaps i shall have to give it a whirl.
