Hi all,
just had my nutritionist friend over-she loves to challenge me. She claimed stomach HCL destroys raw enzymes therefore there are is no effect from enzymes in raw food? Anyone got a good answer with some research or something for this one?

That's old thought... it was believed that the stomach acid destroyed the enzymes, but medical research has since shown that to be false (i'm sure some are... but it's not as sweeping as previously believed). I'm sure I've read some on Pubmed... I know I've seen them. Sorry I can't help point them out exactly. Anyone have a copy of Life Food Factor handy? They seem to outline all studies quite well.

Anyhow to me enzymes are not where raw is. Enzymes are a representation of how natural and unprocessed a food is. I don't truly believe that it's enzymes per say that are the 'magic' pill of raw. The whole Howell theory that we have a finite amount of enzymes in our body and die when we run out was also disproven decades ago - our bodies make enzymes every minute of every day. But that old theory is still brought up to justify raw... which is a way makes the whole movement way too easy to disagree with from a scientific perspective, when old science is quoted.

I'm happy to say though the idea that stomach acid destroys all enzymes is definitely old!!

Cheers,
Sheryl

Yep the new theory is that we should eat the best food available as then the body can extract what it needs at any given point. Why are we still quoting Howell after 50 odd years beats me.... .. I prefer to believe in the bodies innate intelligence and leave it at that.

Just ask your friend why the government is trying to get people to eat more fruit and vegetables. I never argue with professionals. I just tell them to look at my skin and compare it with other 65 year olds they know.
