Rawk On!!

« on: Friday 11 May, 2007 »

I am new to running,(1 year June 1st), and have had much success in a short time.  With the help of going raw, I have run 1 marathon and currently training for 2nd trail marathon.  I have completed a 50k at 5hrs3minutes, as well as numerous races from 5k to 16 miles.  I am totally into the sport and find I am getting better with each race.
Problems are starting to occur.  One of the problems is the fact that I work 55-60 hrs a week and squeezing in a training run, sometimes up to 4 hrs is tough.  I sleep 5-6hrs a night and arrive at work by 4:30 am.  I am a chef and eat well.  I know I need more sleep because I am physically exausted.  Plus the lack of stretching has tightened up my legs so much.  Before running I had a great yoga practice, but when the running got more intense I had to stop going to classes.  Most of the runners I train with never stretch, so I usually skip that part.  Not Good!!   I am worried that if this keeps up I will just get injured and be out for a while, which I definetly don't want to happen.
Any motivating words of wisdom??

Hey RFF, first off CONGRATS on your big achievements in just one year of training.

I do not run, for the main reason that it tightens you up and I need to be loose and flexy for dancing!

However, if you're a raw food athelete, you can't go past Doug Graham's Nutrition and Physical Performance:

I would say you definitely need more sleep and to stretch. I'm no expert runner but I was sure it was absolutely essential to stretch before running? Maybe you need to implement this practice with your fellow runners!!!!!! Be the one who leads by example.

As for motivating words... you are doing great things... so stick to raw, and make sure you take care of yourself the best way possible... so you can continue to excel... you deserve it!

Hi RFF,

Well done on your running success so far.  Excellent effort!

I've had great success with ChiRunning www.chirunning.com for overcoming chronic injury and haven't looked back since implementing the changes.  The body loosening exercises which are demonstrated in the DVD and shown in the book are fantastic and I make sure I do these before I head out the door for my run each morning.  I go through them again when I get home and also do a few general stretches while I'm cooling down.  They only take a few minutes to do, but they make a big difference to my flexibility.

When I get home from work in the evening I do about 10-15 minutes of yoga as I am chained to a desk all day and find that I need to release a lot of tension from my back, shoulders and neck.

Hope this helps you ...

From what I know, latest ideology is NO stretching before run, You do not wanna make running muscles loose.
Stretcing before run is actually increasing risk of injuries. Stretcing after is required, muscles are warm and we do not want the muscles and tendons shorten up in the after run tightness.

So to sum it, no strectches before, yes stretches after, and independent flexibility - yoga sessions.

Princess - run only tightens initialy, and is reaction to evertraining, running too fast or too far, while not ready for it.

Runners could keep exellent flexibility if everything is done correctly.

RFF wow you are rocking...well done on your successes...
sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep....we need it for recovery.do whatever you need to do to get more sleep/rest...even lying down is good rest and recovery time too..

I never stretch cold running muscles...maybe mid run and at the end of the run i do...and my flexiblity is excellent...actually its even better than it was pre-running...

let us know how you get on Frank..

you say you are a chef...what sort of food do you make?is it  a raw foods restaurant?

Thanks for all of the imput!!. I have a friend who has implimented the CHIRUNNING  program and has improved her running.  So far this year, at age 42 she has won 7of 8 races from 5k to 50k.  She is on fire right now!!
Yes I am a vegan chef/raw foods chef.  I am going to apprentice at the Tree of Life center in Arizona for 3.5 months.  I plan to be a full time raw chef in just a few weeks.  I think the mostimportant thingto do right now is get lotsof rest and make sure I stretch daily.
