My goodness what a rude hairdresser. I hope you didn't pay! I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall!

Your hair looks gorgeous now... curly and shiny. Mine is all damaged from the lice lotion. Straggly ends and very oily again. I am starting from scratch. Sad

It's worth it in the end though!

Well I have gone back to washing my hair. Once a week for now. My hair has looked shocking for a little while and looking bad had me feeling bad and feeling bad had me eating yukko foods and yukko foods made my hair greasy which had me feeling bad and on and on.

So I have broken the cycle. I've also started wearing minimal cosmetics again. Mascara, shadow, blush and a clear lip balm. Compared to the foundation, powder, 2-3 shades of shadow, liners (eye and lip) 1-3 shades of lippie, blusher, concealer and perfume... I am still a lot better off and feeling a million bucks!

Eventually I would like to have enough self esteem that I don't need to wear it to feel good but I ain't there yet! LOL.

Hi Jen,

I empathise with you.  I tried the "au naturale" for a while, but for some reason....whether my desire to wash my hair is so ingrained in me.....I still wanted to wash my hair.

So like you, I now wash my hair once a week and feel better for it.....even if it's only making me feel better emotionally first.  And for work, I put on mineral powder on my face, mascara and lip gloss.  Like you, much better than when I was putting on foundation, then powder, eye make up, mascara, eye-liner, blush, lip-liner and lippy....which I reapplied many times throughout the day.

So now I feel better when my hair "blows in the wind" rather than being stuck to my scalp in cyclonic weather!!  Yes, it may improve with time with me not washing it, but I feel better this way.

BTW, there is something I've been meaning to ask before and would like to know what people think about this:  why does it have to come down to self-esteem issues if you wear make-up?  I go around every other day when I'm not at work not wearing make-up.  I don't have an issue with people seeing the "real me"....whatever that is.  But I enjoy looking a little different at times, and if that means make-up, so be it!

I don't believe to show the "real you", you have to stop washing your hair and stop putting make-up on.  I feel more comfortable in myself and am more happier if I can "flick my hair in the wind", hence I'm more myself!!!  THE REAL ME!!!  If that indicates to others that I'm low in self-esteem, then so be it.  I'd rather be happy and "low self-esteem", than so-called "high self-esteem" and miserable.....if you get my gist.

If you wash your hair and put make-up on because you feel "insecure", then that is what you have to do to get through the day.

Yes, this is the raw/natural/wholistic/"mother nature" path for some and that entails not washing hair, but why should we feel bad or be labled to have low self-esteem if we wash our hair?!!!

Jen, I truly believe that we show our true colours when we are comfortable with ourselves.

Yes, I understand make-up can be chosen to be used to hide ourselves....used as a mask; washing your hair is "conforming" with certain ideals.....But also understand for others, we ACTUALLY like putting some make-up on and washing our hair.....especially when we are going out for dinner after we have been in the garden all day looking "FULL OF SELF-ESTEEM"!!!  LOL, LOL

Would love to hear from others what you think and why you do this?

Please understand, this post is not judging anyone.....it is a post that will open my eyes to others' way of life and point of view.

Take care all

Luv

P.s. when I say "Would love to hear from others what you think and why you do this", I mean what made you decide to not wash your hair and not wear make-up?

Was it to go as natural as possible(which I would assume most people would think this way);

Was it to try something different, and to see how it turns out (which is what I did);

was it also to save money (which probably was an indirect, but good, consequence anyway for some);

Any other reason?

Did it make some people more confident in themselves showing the "natural" self;

Did it make others feel more exposed and uncomfortable?

I would love to know where people are at with this.

Thanks again

Luv

I am gorgeous enough anyway, so I don’t need it.....................

Well, ok, maybe that is a slight exaggeration. I never learnt to apply make-up properly. The very few times I did wear it as a teenager, I looked like a cross between a circus clown and a Parisian street walker. So I eventually gave up and have rarely worn make-up since. The last time I wore it was five years ago for some special studio portrait photos and I felt uncomfortable and self-conscious.

I wash my hair once every six weeks - no particular reason, just feel like doing it this way. My hair appears to be very soft and shiny, since I started consuming vegetable juice everyday.

Dammit... just did a big long reply and lost it. Ahhhhhhhhhh well.

Ok, I'm sorry Rita. It was arrogant of me to assume that because it's a self esteem thing for me that it is for everyone.

Why did I do it? Because when I saw Freedom's original post I thought it sounded like a fun experiment. I wanted to see what changes my hair would go through when I stopped putting chemicals in it!

However if I have a bad eating moment or if I have to put stuff in my hair for nits (thanks kids!!!) I need to start all over again and lately I feel like I have had a greasy thing attached to my head forever. Not fun.

Cosmetics. I stopped wearing these because I wanted to like who I was. I wanted to appreciate my own face without trying to make my eyes or cheekbones look different or my mouth more colourful. I just feel ugly without it that's all.

I would love to get to this stage but am now trying it from a different angle. I am trying to just love myself regardless of whether or not I am wearing it and not feel ugly or unkept in the process. Hopefully then cosmetics will be like alcohol... I just won't want it one day and it will stay that way forever!

When I did my beauty training (15 years ago), for 18 months I had: perfect hair, makeup, white uniform, manicured nails, spotless shoes - we had to look perfect, all the time.

I found this very artificial and draining, and have been divorcing myself from that image ever since.

I started to look for natural skincare alternatives, discovered vegetarianism, and alternative therapies, and it has been quite a journey from there.  I want to avoid harmful chemicals in my food and personal care products as much as possible.

Now I don't wear makeup, quit having my hair coloured a few years ago (I had my hair coloured right after my divorce for a few years, now I don't need it).  I washed my hair with bicarb soda for over 6 weeks, and it looked good.  Then one of my children gave me nits, and I panicked and went back to shampoo to get the treatment stuff out.  Sad I have 5kg of bicarb downstairs, time to start again.

So for me the reasons for not wearing makeup, etc are simple:
*Don't want to spend the money
*Can't be bothered
*no harmful chemicals
*Spending most of my time with 'alternative type' people, who accept me for who I am
*I'm finally letting my inner light shine, and I get compliments about my hair and skin.  When my eyes are sparkling and bright, they look more attractive then when I wore makeup.
*Don't care what other people think - this one took me a long time.  Thoroughly worth it LOL.
* I accept me for who I am, and where I am right now in my life.  I feel beautiful, it doesn't matter what I look like.
*Did I mention can't be bothered? laugh

Now when someone smiles at me in the street I don't wonder if I have somethng stuck in my teeth  snicker, I just smile back and keep going.  Feels better that way.

Hey Sanghama, I think they would smile at you because you have a lovely gentle and kind vibe that comes from you. You probably can't see it as much but you are very inspiring.

My sweet Jen, NOOOOOO, I would NEVER say that people are arrogant simply because they look at things from what they've experienced.  If that is what is arrogance, then we ALL are arrogant.  Arrogance for me has a totally different meaning.....and you don't fit in that category!!! LOL

And thank you for your reply.  I DO know what you are experiencing because I am not the most confident person, but am learning to love me for me......with make-up or without it.

[

I am gorgeous enough anyway, so I don’t need it.....................

Kitty K, you go girl.  Love that 'tude (or your confidence) you have.

Sanghama, yes, you have answered beautifully.  I do know where you are coming from.  No, didn't work in the beauty industry.....but work in the Courts and you do have a certain image you must uphold.

But like you, my reasons are very similar.......I feel more comfortable in my own skin.....AND CAN'T BE BOTHERED....hehehehe.  Oh, must remember also to say, it take LESSSSSS time to get ready to go out. LOL

BUT I still enjoy occasionally doing the make-up thingy.

It's taken me MANY years to get me to this way of thinking......and my road ahead is still LOOOONGGG and windy.  And I have still many lessons to learn.  So I thank you everyone for opening my eyes up even more.

Luv

Rita heart

P.S.  Still eager to hear from others......hehehehehe

In my 20s I wore "a face" to work every day.  Foundation, blush, powder, eye shadow, mascara, eye liner etc.

How many girls can relate to the fact that the 'getting ready' stage at a girlfriend's house, with the music pumping and the hair in a towel, and the make-up going on was sometimes the BEST part of the whole night?  Often it was the longest part of the night. Wink

Foundation & powder was the first thing to go many many moons ago.  Then everything except mascara and some lippy.  I've never been a fan of lipstick - it doesn't last long on me (I think I chew it off or something).

Then... I used to wear what I called "party mascara" which was only when there was a 'do' of some sort.  But I've dispensed with that now (it's been a couple of years).  I tried someone's mascara a few months ago - applied it to one eye, and then had to immediately take it off because it just felt alien to me, and I didn't like the effect.

So, I wear no makeup at all.

Awesome. That is exactly how I want to feel. At the moment I feel like I am bare or missing out. I don't miss the foundation and powder though. One step forward.

As a teenager and young woman in my 20's, I never wore any make up ...and neither did the girls I hung out with,.. we were flower children, all natural!
In my late 30's i started to colour my hair to hide the grey, I also had a much younger boyfriend for many years.. and didn't want to show the grey to him or our (younger) friends. I wore lipstick now and again, and some eyeliner.

Now in my 50's, I don't colour my hair, I wear no make up whatsoever and love it!  Getting ready to go out means washing my face and putting on a few drops of jojoba oil  on it.  I don't even have to brush my hair as it's super short now.
I just couldn't be bothered with  all the fussing.  My husband agrees , and  my dearest friends are pretty much the same.
Maybe I'm just lucky having a life partner who doesn't care for these sorts of things. I once knew a girl who said if she didn't shave her underarms her husband would divorce her.. she was serious!!
So I am as a child.. no artifice.. what you see is what you get.
Do you remember being a child , playing all day, then having a wash , drying off...and that's it?
That's the sort of freedom I have .
I do wash my hair...with bicarb... I  love being clean and fresh, even if I don't use soap or other lotions or potions.

Beautiful Dani. Bill too loves it when I am make up free. He has said nothing about me going back to wearing a little cosmetics. Whatever makes me happy would be what he would say.

You look great in your new avatar....

Hmm let me think.  I wanted to try the no shampoo thing as an experiment, just to see what happened and how my head reacted.  I did end up giving up on it through utter frustration at the never ending oiliness, but am washing my hair less now - once or twice a week instead of every second day.  Doesn't seem to need it more than that, so there has been positive gains from the experiment.  I think perhaps given more time I could adjust to needing less washes with shampoo.  Vague ideas to try again with a cleaner diet.

Make-up: Just can't be bothered? I have always got compliments on my skin at times when I had no make-up on, and no comments when I have had foundation on... that was a good sign to not use it.  I used to put on foundation and eye makeup - liner, mascara & very natural amounts of eyeshadow, for special occasions - now I'm finding myself forgetting to even think about it when getting ready to go out.  I forgot about make up completely for a few years there at least.  Then I got back into costume parties, and sometimes you need some for that - but it feels very strange to wear it.
