Today I cracked a bonza coconut from sunrise coconuts that was just one of the most amazingly beautiful coconuts I've ever had and the shell popped open and just sat there perfectly balanced after I'd gotten it's creamy flesh out. I was going to use it as a plant pot but I came up with this instead.

I love it! What have you done with your coconut shells? I love coconuts and just don't know what to do with the shells. I could make an interesting outfit for summer!

I think they would make beautiful soup bowls too! The ones you have small portions in and drink from. I imagine they would polish up really pretty too.

That's gorgeous!
On the topic of coconuts... I've read a number of things that say coconut fat is one of the most easily digested of all fats due to its medium chain fatty acids, yet the morning after I eat coconut I always feel just a bit 'icky' in the tummy. Not really unpleasant or sick or anything, just not fabulous. Do you think this is because I can't get organic cocos and these are the only non-organic thing I eat?
Thanks!

This half of the shell had the hole in the bottom. I told hubby that tomorrow I'm going to sand the outside and oil it or varnish it... but I don't know. It has a natural charm. When I find something that can support it from the bottom so it can drain I'll plant cactus in them. How awesome!

I'm glad you all like it!  yahh

That's a great idea Jen.

The only thing I can think of is to perhaps make a chime of some sorts....broken shells softly hitting each other in the wind?.....

I'm thinking out door macrame hanging pots? Very 70's! Or even drilling tiny holes in them and putting chains through for a little hanging pot. I think that would work well. I might just do another one tomorrow.

Or, thanks Rosal for the inspiration, coconut bells? Turn it upside down and put a ding dong thing in it? An interesting sound maybe? I'm going to have some fun with these. I may do a coconut workshop day at my house!

My last coconut split really neatly as well, making two little bowls. I have one filled with chillis and one filled with heads of garlic in my kitchen... they look really cute.
I like your candle and rocks idea but Jen.

DR - does it mean that the coconut has gone off if the jelly is hard?

Bella, no young coconuts are not bad when hard. When coconuts are really young the flesh is soft and jelly. As they mature more nutrients/stored energy is added to it, and it gets thicker and harder, and when fully mature switches from being higher in carb to being higher in fat. Even a fairly hard young coconut is still fairly low in fat.

I think Harley's just saying his preference is for jelly coconuts and he gives the rest to other animals. This is how he is! If he gets lower quality fruit he doesn't eat it... he passes it on (compost or other animal food). I tend to be the same. I opened a big watermelon this morning. Even the texture looked good. However it has no sweetness and tastes a little like pumpkin. Our compost will appreciate it more than me!

In raw food recipes jelly young coconuts are used differently from more mature coconuts too.

A coconut workshop sounds fun!

Jen, your idea now has me thinking more...the shells could perhaps be used for percussion musical instruments (well at least for kids or for fun):

Here's a website which has some pictures to inspire:

http://www.nomadartz.com/Retail/instruments.html2)

1)  A shaker (with smaller pieces of the coconut shell)

2)  As a small hand-drum (using one stick, beat on the coconut shell)

3)  Turn them upside down and use them to bang on -- as drums

jewellery, utensils, (spoons/ladles etc), bowls, etc can be made from shells. beautiful when sanded and varnished/oiled
we have them in the sandpit, bath, cubby houses, gardens & elfin cafes, where the children use them as bowls, cups, diggers, buckets, caves, dolly huts etc
we often eat from them
some end up with a cute pixie face where they were opened and become garden sculptures.
good containers for crayons/sewing-craft bits.
