Hi People

I dye my hair is that I have a few greys in my fringe and crown , I have been dyeing it with "Atlantis " water based hair dye...no yucky stuff but still dont like the idea of it.

Was told that Egyptian Henna is the most natural Henna to dye hair with.
Has anybody used it?
I used Henna years ago in my early 20s and it took me ages to get rid of the auben red.
I tried to sit in the sun at one time with coffee on my head to get the nice browns...then i couldnt get rid of the smell Smiley .

Does anybody have any real  natural remedies for hair dyeing?

Cheers

Ive started to go to only salons that use natural chemical-free dyes only, as all my attempts to use home dyeing kits were distasters

I found only one in Sydney that uses all organic natural dies its called Lattouf at the Sofitel Hotel.
I'm finding that the organic colour even looks better than those nasty toxic dyes.  Plus its so nice not to have to breathe in those toxic fumes anymore!

Used Henna a few times but found it too messy

I have read that by putting a vinegar mixture onto the hair and leaving it to dry, helps to add colour to the hair. Brown vinegar for brown and red. White vinegar for blond. Don't know if it works or not, haven't tried it.

I have also read that by being 100% raw the hair will regain it's colour naturally. I know that doesn't help at the moment, but for the future...

No problem at all Alegne - let me know how it goes .. I wanted to go just before i left Sydney but didnt have time.

I just had it lightened here at an organic salon in NYC that uses clay based dyes and the colour looks great..

Vinegar is good also  - I use it to keep my hair from going brassy..

Interesting discussion.

Would love to know more about the clay based dyes used in NYC. Could you please give me the name of the salon you went to?

Thanks,

Eve

my mom uses henna to dye her hair.  it doesn't smell like the chemical commercial stuff she used to use.  it also gives her hair a more natural color then the commercial product.  the commercial stuff i noticed always looked kind of harsh and unrealistic.

I went to the Body Shop to see if they had any henna, and they no longer stock it because the feedback they were receiving was that it was too fiddly to apply and it took too long as well.

Now, I have NEVER used Henna so I can't attest to that, but from other people's experience with it, it is a protracted process.

But I would imagine that you would have to take that into account if you're looking at a natural alternative to hair dye.

I would still be willing to try it if I could find some.

Hey Rita,
You can find it in health food shops or organic shops. If you're really keen you can get it at bulk from New Directions lol.
It's quite gritty and you have to mix it with water yourself in a bowl so it can get quite messy. When you go to rinse it out it takes a bit to get the gritty bits out, but it leaves your hair nice and soft.

For the first time in 10 years I've grown out my colour and I am finally au naturale. It was pretty strange having so much regrowth for a long while, but now its all been cut out it's fantastic.

I thought henna is as natural as it gets! Rosemary is good for brunettes as camomile is to blondes.
