Since going raw ive had a strange thing happen...the sides of my mouth are cracked and sore and not healing very well. They arnt huge or anything, just small but quite sore.
Has anyone else come across this when they first went raw?
Im guessing its from a deficiency from something..

Hi Emily,

Do you mean the very corners of your mouth? If so, it may indicate Zink deficiency. I used to get them a lot and having a couple of zink tablets would sort it out (two tablets used to work miracles for me). Of course there  is a question of supplementation while raw  Sad

Maybe zink rich foods like pumpkin seeds will help.

Hope that helps.

Love

Yup at the corners of my mouth..
I think you may be right with the zinc, i think i may have some zinc tablets in my drawer somewhere, i might take them until they run out and then ill start with raw goodies that are packed with zinc Smiley
Thanks for your help!

I remember experiencing a little bit of this, but can't remember the reason.  I no longer experience this and I think it happened before I was raw.

However, what I do remember is that when I first went raw I noticed my lips got very dry once in a while...I figured it was detoxing lipstick (it was the one piece of makeup I'd wear once in a while).

The reason I thought this is because after a year or so of not wearing any lipstick at all I tried a little of "Burt's Bees" a few times and when I fasted a little, I noticed my lips would get dry -- and only after a time of wearing lipstick a little...

Suffice to say, I no longer wear lipstick (or any other makeup for that matter).

Is it better to have pineapple in smoothies rather than in a fruit salad maybe? or is it more of an internal effect..

put those zinc pills in the bin...lol! ease up on the pines..

was it a lucky guess or something i just see all the time...?

yet how easy is it to go into the medical mindset that we need to pop a pill and treat the symptom..just look at the cause..
only then will we recieve bodily applause.

pineapples cell structure is like broken glass..so i only eat a few. i let my tounge and mouth corners tell me what my limit is. i like pineapples on their own. maybe you could blend em and see what happens.

wow really? i had no idea a pineapple was so full on to the system! i was having loads of it as i thought the enzymes in it were great for digestion....maybe paw paw is better for the enzymes then?
So you wouldn't have one slice of pineapple per day then? would you think that was to much?

ask your body how much is too much...remember how much you ate recentley and its ripeness.

i find super sugar ripe pines not as harsh. im not sure what variety or degree of ripeness your eating. but i remember eating 5 super ripe pines in a day and having no major probs..

its great for digestion but no where as good as the 'digestion easy street' way of eating. ie eating foods that work for you in combos and amounts that work.

thats what i love about raw is we get to be our own little walking science project.

I find I can't eat more than a few pieces of pineapple in Australia.
It attacks my tongue with little blisters and eventually my tongue bleeds. Can also get ulcers along my gum lines encouraging receding gums. Not cool.
The pineapples in Thailand were much sweeter and I could eat about half a pineapple before my body said enough.

It was the same with pineapples Piers and I ate in Indonesia... they were so sweet with no burn!

Unripe pineapple is very high in acid and if picked early they do not ripen. With a properly ripe one it's sweet with none of those effects. There's also an enzyme called bromelain which pineapple is high in... workers who process pineapple for a living have to wear gloves apparently or their hands wear off! (see http://everything2.com/index.pl?node=pineapple)

Harley when you say the cell structure is like broken glass are you referring to the acid effect? Or the enzyme? Or the cell structure? Or simply as a metaphor for how it makes your mouth feel? I'm curious as I've never heard any thing like that about the actual structure of the cells.

Here's some science speak on the pineapple cell wall structure if someone wants a laugh!
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=157275

I just read that the reason apparently for why pineapples do not ripen once picked is they have no starch reserves that can be broken down into sugars are it ripens.
