Hi lesbc,

My grandson hate's raw veg's apart from corn. However he loves fruit, so there's hope yet lol lol....He also loves my green juices (I call them goops cause they are thick, more like smoothies than juice lol lol...) anyway, I add baby spinach, silverbeet, bock choy, anything I have that is green and leafy, grapes, two to three banana's and enough water to be able to drink without chewing lol lol... Blend and serve. The taste of the greens are disguised by the sweetness of the fruit and kids love sweet things lol.. It works for my grandson, he is 18mths old and as soon as he hears the blender he heads straight to the cupboard for his plastic cup and waits for me to fill it up, we then have this routine of standing in the kitchen leaning on the bench and drinking together lol... I hope this helps. It doesnt matter how they receive their greens as long as they do and blending them is the best way I know...

with love

My two, 5 and 1, prefer to eat there greens straight out of the garden. They both come into the vege patch while I am weeding or watering and pick at whatever takes their fancy. In my experience all children will eat things they pick themselves that they wouldn't normally touch.

GS is a great suggestion too. An awesome way to get them their greens.

i'm not sure how old your children are.  we garden a lot and my 6yo knows the names of all edible greens growing in our area.  i ask her to choose & pick a bunch of greens she wants in her salad, and she chooses what seeds to plant in her fairy garden.  my nearly 2yo has been chewing greens in garden since he could sit up!

salads:  processing greens up finely makes it easier for little children to chew a salad.  more greens, less chewing.   i used to pre-chew peas & beans for the babies in the garden.   blend a salad dressing with avo/tom/cuc etc & lots of green herbs in - littlies can just have the dressing, others can pour it over salad.

blends & juices:  you can start sneaking greens into whatever they are currently eating - juiced, blended, or processed.  VERY gradually, over time, increase the greens.  they won't notice!  For older ones you could, say, just make a habit of putting 3 nettle leaves (ie not enough to notice), or touch of lettuce etc,  in the smoothie/nutmilk jug.  Once they are used to the idea/action of it, and it's normal not wierd, you can increase.  Both my children regard greens as being a basic ingredient of any smoothie, juice, or savoury dish.  It's just getting used to something different.  We used to sing a song when we put the greens into a meal, my daughter made it up when she was 4..."happy happy minerals, minerals minerals, happy happy minerals minerals moo...." laugh i don't know where the moo came from.

oh and don't make an issue of it.  try to approach each meal as a new experience, and they may totally forget that yesterday they didn't like greens.  and if they still don't like greens, that's ok..... they'll get used to you eating them as a regular normal habit and will eventually join in.  Have lots of variety for them to choose from.  My kids love greens i don't & vice versa.

My 2 and 3 year old girls sip my green smoothies.... but my 4 year old wont touch them.
My children will eat most fruits - but will spit out carrot (even grated), tomato or any other salad vegie.  (obviously didn't start them early enough on raw salad vegies).

Sue my daughter didn't touch any salad vegies until recently (she's 6 this mth). She ate carrot and capsicum, but not in large quantities. That has changed in the last 12mths or so. Now she will eat tomatoes, cucumber, some sprouts, etc. Just try them now and then and one day they will surprise you.

I would have to say Raw Family by the Boutenkos would be best (just Google it). Shazzie is also currently producing a book called 'Evie's Kitchen' (Evie is hre little daughter who just turned 3 and has been raw from birth) which I think will have excellent recipes for kids. It is supposed to be out soon!

just now we are finding recipe books with photos are awesome.  my 6yo choose one sweet & one savoury recipe each week, we find the ingredients & make it together.  as she's not reading yet the photos are important! she loves knowing she can choose whatever she wants.

mastering the basics is handy with children, eg, know the basics for making nutmilk, smoothie, icecream, salad, dressings, bread/crackers, cake, soup. you can find these in any raw recipe books.   then you're covered for everything and can build on that, and eventually you'll find you have hundreds of possibilities up your sleeve.  like anything, it's only practise!  it took me AGES to get into any kind of food routine.  now it is easy.  messy (with a 20month old who insists on being a part of everything laugh) but easy.

Hey Merridy: "...we are finding recipe books with photos are awesome" - can you recommend some that have good pictures.  All of the recipes I have are only the words and no pictures.

Also, has anyone got any suggestions for DVD's that show food preparation?  Does the Talifero family's 'Breakthrough' DVD show food prep?  My partner and son love watching a cooking show every Wednesday night and I would love to have a raw food show for him to get some ideas from.  We recently got a bushtucker DVD ("Bushtucker with Koa") which he loves watching...when we pass a grevillea in flower he imitates word for word Koa's comment "you can suck the nectar from all the grevilleas"!

Jackson, what you need is a copy of Alissa Cohen's 'Living on Live Food' DVD. I don't think you can buy it alone (it comes with the recipe book) but the recipe book is excellent and it has pictures too. There are two DVDs, with a total of about 3 hours footage - they show Allissa with two of her raw-food coaching client and she spends the whole time making a wide variety of dishes while talking about the raw food lifestyle to these two ladies. It's very good!

I agree. The Alissa Cohen DVD really won me over. it was also popular with my older children. It makes everything look yum.
