Juliano semi dehydrates sliced strawberry and mango and chews that! That's the closest I've come to seeing a recipe for gum! Good luck!

You can get some ideas here... it seems around the world people have used many different things as a base for gum:

Raw organic kale is great as a healthy gum substitute(a tip by the one and only David Wolfe), I personally can't get enough of it!

Hmmm yummy kale, actually the stems of fennel are quite nice and refreshing too, especially on a long walk, give you sweet smelling breath.

Great suggestion

If you could get your hands on some sugar cane and gnaw on, that would be great!

I remember having a piece of sugar cane as a child, only memories of real sweetness and toughness to chew...would love to get some, but have no idea about it here in Adelaide, might have to ask the one and only "Cane man" (Harley) when he gets back.

great suggestion freedomB, by the way, love your blog  rose

Fennel is fab for sweet-smelling breath and the lovely aniseed flavour and like the humble apple great when you're out and about- Great suggestion BB!

I thought of kale as it's chewy and a natural deordorizer(chorophyll sp)  and tranquillizer(Mg) too(fruits are good but still sugar)!

well they class nutra sweet on the 'foods to avoid when pregnant'...

not that i class nutra sweet as a food...lol!
what is the orginal gum?

a few options..

sugar cane..most asian grocers in central market have it. keep looking. it grows well in adelaide back yards.

celery sometimes just doesnt want to disolve in the mouth..so i just keep chew'n. one thing they teach us in box'n is to chew, chew, chew..keeps the jaw muscles in shape.

jack fruit is where they stole the idea for 'juicy fruit' bubblegum.
an easy to find fruit in darwin/mossman/cape tribulation..but else where good luck.

hello  BB  so lovely to meet you & your beautiful family the other night.

i just had to respond to this post, as today we went walking in some nearby bushland collecting rosehips and tree sap.  native tree saps are an awesome gum, sometimes called 'bush lollies' by aboriginal children.  my children love collecting & chewing it. i'm still learning which ones are best, but i think acacias/eucalypts are a good place to start.

i'd love to hear if anyone else knows which trees are good for edible saps?
