It's orange season here in California.  I've been drinking fresh OJ almost every day for a few weeks now (in addition to whatever I eat).  They are just awesome!!

So, I figure it's time to do a juice fast (or what have you).  A friend in the area will do it with me.  I figure I'll give it about a week or so (just depends....).

Starting when I wake up this morning.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

  • Last time I did a juice fast:  quite a while ago.  maybe a couple of years ago?
  • What I've been eating lately:  lots of apples and oranges (they're in season).  Every week, I  still buy/eat out and eat a little gourmet (a curse of living in California where it's so readily available Wink ).
  • What I hope to accomplish: break certain eating habits and eat simpler

hey Rosal well done on Your decision, will follow Your progress closely.

My former yoga teacher used to do 1 week orange juice cleanses 2x per year every year, but he was using the Cubans oranges - there are big like grapefruits, and are not that sweet, I wish they are availbale.

Hey Rudy,  the Cuba oranges sound very interesting.  So many varieties out there to try.  I see you're doing your Master Cleanse.  Hang in there!  I did the MC for about 5-7 days one year...went fine..

Hi 6pak, I got a small box of the satsuma mandarins (pic below) ...I'm thinking of including them in my OJ feast/fast here and there.

Yeah Valencia oranges are fantastic.  The ones I have this week (and from last week) are from Oceanside, CA.  A few weeks ago I had some oranges that I think were from Evergreen -- they were great!   I'd be interested in hearing about where you get yours -- I'll give a call sometime soon.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Here are my supplies to start the OJ fast:

  • electric juicer
  • manual juicer
  • straw (made of some hard plastic/glass material)

Photo of the citrus (bought at wholesale):

  • Valencia oranges -  40 lbs/18kg/115 oranges or 4/5 bushel - USD $24.00
  • Satsuma mandarins - 10 lbs/4.5kg - USD $16.50
  • Mayer lemons

VALENCIAS??  Did someone mention Valencias??  My favourite orange ever.  The primo orange for juicing, in my humble opinion.  I love them so much.  And blood oranges run a close second.

Although, I discovered this year that navels are the best at the end of the season - so sweet and juicy.  Amazing.

Have fun on your citrus feast Rosal!

Fbi, what a deal!  I'm still learning the ropes of where deals are here in California -  am sure there are humungous ones out there...I'm just not familiar with all the groves, tree, locations, etc.  In the short time, I've been here,  friends have passed on free apples and walnuts. Nice!

Miss G, hmmm, that's interesting that the navel oranges you had tasted better at the end of the season.  Gotta' love it when a season can surprise you at the end...

Hi Garfield22, I always enjoy your bright posts!

Speaking of pics, here's a pic taken during the 1st day of my OJ fast:

I walked around the beach and it was clear, beautiful and blue-sky day.  Unfortunately, it was on the cool side (it usually is here in San Francisco).  However, after I walked up the steps (a few hundred from the bottom to the top, I was warmed up).

DAY 1

  • Morning:  Drank water with some lemon.
  • Day:  about 2 cups/1 pint of OJ
  • Evening:  about 2 cups/1 pint of OJ
  • Night:  about 1 cup of Satsuma Mandarin juice

Other:

  • This morning when I woke up, my tongue had a slight, white coating.
  • I notice I feel colder after I drink the OJ.  Hmmm...interesting....Is this common?  The OJs are stored at room temperature (which is on the cooler side).

Thanks and likewise Rosal! - how fortunate and blessed you are to live to live in sunny California(how's Arnie doing?) with awesome fresh and ripe produce.

Oranges are great alone and makes a dark green leaves yum( they are just so versatile:)

I am loving your style!

Thanks, Jen!  Well, we'll see what happens.  I do like documenting though. Smiley

Garfield22, thanks for orange the tip!   I had a friend who made a great veggie salad (mostly greens) with a dressing of OJ/Lime -- it was so good.    The Terminator-Governor ..hmmm, haven't heard too much about him....  Outside of that, I know here in California people are signing petitions to address caging issues of animals on farms...

Random Thoughts

I'm glad to see the white tongue.  Shows results.  At the start of my fast, I was somewhat already looking forward to a simple meal;  because they taste good but now I'm ready to wait longer for them.

Background

Raw for almost 4 years.  Before that was a typical SAD diet.

In the last few years, I've noticed that my body experiences shifts...It no longer likes something and so I no longer eat it (or go out of my way to eat it).  For example, recently, I no longer buy agave nectar.  I eat dates for my sweetner.

What I've been experiencing lately that I hope to address via this OJ feast:

  • gas
  • irregular digestion
  • body odor (this recently returned when I started eating a lot of Nori sheets (untoasted).
  • slight cramps before my period (this was totally gone before)

--> By the way, it has been only 2 days and the first 3 symptoms are gone.

A lot of the above is probably caused by some improper food combining with dehydrated raw goods I bought.  I've been eating out and sometimes eating with friends (who use some food and/or food combinations I might not be used to or eating that much of).

In addition, I've been drinking a lot of fresh OJ and apples...and I think my body has been cleansed more and less tolerant of less juicy stuff..

Goals

One thing I'd like to work on is a more consistent workout routine for more tone and strength.  Currently, I'm walking almost an hour everyday (with a backpack and going up and a few hills).

So, working on add weight-training routine.

For a level set, here's a pic taken on Day 1 at the beach:

DAY 2

  • Thin white coating on the tongue
  • Facial skin is a little ruddy on the cheeks (same as in Day 1 actually).
  • Juice: Pretty much drinking the same as what is described in Day 1.
  • Physical activity:  Didn't do anything today except stay home and read, etc.
  • Sleep:  I'm not sleeping "heavy".  It seems I'm aware I'm sleeping a lot of times or something like that.  I had a few dreams last night.  They were mostly based on simple, mundane  events (taking pictures, washing bottles, etc.) in my life so nothing too interesting.

The nights are getting colder so I put on an extra layer to sleep which kept me comfortable, but I still didn't zonk out as normal.

Once I start working out more perhaps I'll sleep better.  In any case, I woke up later than normal and felt fine.

Wow! You are looking fit and healthy, Rosal, you are definately benefiting from this awesome lifestyle choice and seem to be consciously aware of the food-combining issues(trail and error, live and learn etc.); so it's all good:)

It's good to here that Californian folk are a conscious community, having said that we shouldn't be addressing these issues in the first place.

Keep up the excellent work!

Hey Garfield, thanks for being supportive!  And in regards to food-combining issues, you've hit the nail on the head!

Coming from my background, I haven't had to worry about food combining issues that much when I first went raw.  My body made adjustments along the way and made necessary repairs which was great.  Now, I think I'm at a point where my body "notices" if I don't combine things correctly.

My personal raw slogan for the week:

You can run, but you can't hide.

 LOL.  laugh

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Food combining

Today, I finished reading this little book/pamphlet called:

Correct Food Combining for easy digestion and wonderful health -- prepared by T.C. Fry (someone Doug Graham was a good friend of).  It doesn't have a date, but it looks pretty old.

It's excellent.  I like how the info gives very detailed information on what happen when different kinds of food are digested (proteins, starches, acid fruits, sweet fruits, etc.).  I liked in particular what he says about alcohol generated from food...

Thought of the week:

In a way, I'm already missing some of my old raw dishes, but I've already moved on in a way and am enjoying the simpler flavors of food.  And am more excited to make tasty, but simpler dishes.

I like a challenge! Wink
