thanx Annete, waterberry, & Jen for sharing your personal relationship with your cycles as well. Kiss Experience, upbringing, social conditioning effects us all but hey, it's all part of our walk here on earth....that's the spice of life.

At one stage I toyed with the idea of getting a mooncup (similar to the keeper) but heard from a few others about their experience with recurring urinary tract infections...Jen have you ever had these sorts of concerns, heard similiar things?

Ladies, your posts have all been so interesting.  I love the idea of spending more time in the moonlight, it sounds so beautiful and magical.

Erthmum I too have been toying with the idea of a mooncup/keeper, and each time I am reminded "that menstrual blood is meant to flow out, not to be controlled half way truough its course and carried inside the body".  That quote comes from the book "Femophobia" and is directed at tampon use, as further in the text it mentions The Keeper as a safer alternative, along with other external products.  I'll go with my intuition for now, as I enjoy the ritual of giving my blood back to the earth, and I can create another ritual of eating certain foods during that time, never thought of that before............oooh the possiblilites.  Am really looking forward to my next period now.   ohyeah

The word 'taboo' originally meant sacred, puts a new spin on things hey.

In the book 'Dragontime', the author mentions the Taureg women in the Tassili Mountains of Algeria who regulate their flow without pads or tampons.  When their period begins they squatt over a hole in the earth and allow the first blood to flow out, then tense their muscles and hold it in.  They sense when they are about to bleed and just spread their legs wide and let it run out.  They wear no underpants.  She also says that every now and then they jump and move around playfully to air out their vaginas. Isn't that awesome!

I have a menstrual cup but ideally I don't like wearing anything inside me.  Sometimes I prefer to use pads or nothing if I can get away with it!  I don't wear underwear usually so its uncomfortable for me either way, like the Taureg women I prefer to be well ventilated smiley  Sorry if thats too much information for some people!

Gina I think that's great, good for you.  Excuse me a minute *runs outside & jumps around enthusiastically*  Ahhh, that's better  laugh

I read about a woman who learned to control her vaginal muscles and hold her blood until she went to the toilet,
she trained her body to go without any protection.    I think she may have still worn underwear though  rofl  sorry,  couldn't help it.

I started bellydancing again last night (after an absence of 4 years) and was taught how to keep the body totally relaxed, in posture, while contracting just our pelvic floor muscles.  Wow, I'd love to practice that and learn to manage my flow naturally, in time.   Even more reason to look forward to my next period.

I believe there is an exercise you can do called The Deer to achieve this exact thing (of retaining menstrual blood until you get to the loo or where-ever to release it, although it is for sexual plaseure as well). I may be wrong with the name, it is similar to normal kegal (pelvic floor) exercises. I'm pretty sure i read about it in a book called 'Hands of light' by Barbara Brennan. will have to check on that one.

Yeah..I actually don't know why i was thinking about getting the keeper, given that I've never been able to (or really wanted to) use tampons....hmm letting it flow..very true.

I used tampons for years until one day I just didn't want to anymore. I have used pads for around 4 years now and am glad of it. I use the keeper for environmental reasons. I am glad to have this also after reading in Elaine Hollingworth's book that most pads and tampons contain asbestos. Why? To make us bleed more so we use more pads and tampons. Sheesh. No wonder the incidence of uterine problems is on the increase.

No I have had no problems with UTI's. I have a friend who has used hers for 7 years with no problems.

I love the idea of being able to control the flow.

I also use a moon cup-I totally appreciate that it is best to flow. I have no probs with UTI's but have never been prone-I imagine some are more sensitive.
Some more interesting info-I was reading in one of my fav books on menstruation etc' Women, Horones and the Menstrual Cycle' by Ruth Trickey that menstruation is abnormal in that pregnancy is the normal and expected state of the body. The body prepares each month for pregnancy and the menstruation is the result of a failure to concieve. This is one way in which we are very different from the lower mammals who I doubt many would often ovulate withour achieving pregnancy. It also prob means that in our earlier days of existence we may not have menstruated very often. I have recently ended five years of amenhhorea from pregnancy, lactation, pregnancy, lactation adding up to five years in total. I know that these extended periods of suppressed oestrogen dominance are very natural and health promoting protecting from oestrogen dominant cancers such as breast/ovarian cancers. So maybe we are not meant to bleed , we are meant to have babies? Just adding some more thoughts to the matrix of menstruation thinking.

Thanks for the support Sanghama, I was hesitant to share that but you made me laugh laugh

I know that these extended periods of suppressed oestrogen dominance are very natural and health promoting protecting from oestrogen dominant cancers such as breast/ovarian cancers. So maybe we are not meant to bleed , we are meant to have babies?

Interesting ideas Becky.  I once had a conversation with a doctor about contraception that went along the same lines. Slightly different of course because she was pushing implanon (sounds like a drug dealer laugh).

We were discusing different forms of hormonal contraception and I said I didn't want to use anything unnatural, so she says condoms are unnatural too and its unnatural to use contraception at all because women are naturally supposed to be pregnant all the time and its not normal for us to be menstruating as much as we do.

I was actually quite frustrated with that doctor though, she wouldn't admitt that there was a difference between using condoms and using hormones to control fertility!  She also wrote down in my file that I was a possible hypochondriac as a result of this and other consultations... but thats another story that ended in me being booked in and sent for a psychiatric assessment without my knowledge or consent, something I'm still really angry about.

Anyway, I'm interested in what you said about the extended periods of suppressed oestrogen dominance being health promoting, I wasn't really aware of that.  I have also read that during pregnancy the body works on correcting certain health problems too, I read that in a homeopathy book.

Hello my ladies,

I might as well post this question here!

Since I started menstruating I've only ever had mild period pain and in the last 6 years or so, none at all.  Out of the blue (since begining of Spring) I have been experiencing the most excruciating contractions, particularly on the first day of my period. My breasts also are noticeably bigger since this started.

I have never experienced such intense pain from a period, and its so intense that I can't sleep and am doubled up in pain crying at night.  I actually feel like my uterus is angry with me or something  shrug  I also feel more emotional around this time than usual, I get really angry and feel a lot of grief about certain things.  I don't know if I'm hormonally unbalanced or actually releasing pent up emotions through my cycle.

I don't feel like this has anything to do with my diet but I could be wrong... I was eating less greens when it started, thats the only change.  I have also been experiencing strong baby cravings since this started, so I'm wondering if this is my body saying "time to have babies!" laugh

Any thoughts?

I have a suggestion for you Gina, and yes, it feels emotional to me.

What if you treated your uterus like a seperate person/personality to you?  What if you spoke to your uterus like you would if you best friend was in pain?    I have done some voice dialogue and body dialogue sessions, and it is amazing what the body reveals when you communicate directly to it.

What happens when you have the pain?  Do you try to ignore or block it somehow, or treat it in a negative manner?  Sometimes all the body part needs is acknowledgement, just a simple "hey, I know your there, thanks for the great work you do for me" type of thing.

I used to ignore my pain, hoping it would eventually go away.  Now I try to treat it like a small neglected child, after acknowledging its presence, I then love and embrace it, and most of the time this is all it requires.

You know your body best, and it sounds like your intuition is really strong.  You'll get your answer from within.

Sanghama

Oh, I nearly forgot.  On the food side of things the avocado is recommended for the uterus, according to the doctrine of signatures.  An avocado looks like a womb and cervix with a swollen seed and that it takes exactly 9 months to grow from blossom to ripened fruit.

Thankyou so much for your thoughtful suggestions Sanghama.

Funny you should mention talking to my body because I was talking to my uterus last night, trying to soothe the distress.  I don't block the pain out or treat it in a negative way, I more feel an instinctive sympathy with my womb, unlike any other part of my body.  What you said about the neglected child resonates.  And when I cry its not just because of the physical pain, its also in grief for something, as if my body is mourning when I menstruate.  Whenever the pain starts I begin to feel really sad with it too.

Has anyone else ever experienced grief with their period pain?  I thought it might have to do with baby cravings because just before the pain started I was feeling a lot of grief over a miscarriage I'd had exactly 6 years previously.

Thanks for that warm hug Neet, I really needed it smiley

Thats interesting to hear that you felt grief with the pain too, its good to know someone else has experienced that and its not just me being totally weird.   I'm sorry about your miscarriage by the way, I think you'd be a great mum, especially with all the growth you have gone through this last year, you have a lot to give.
