Dear all

I read somewhere that figs are rich in minerals, hence it is good for diabetics and people with high blood pressure. Is that true? I am going to recommend it to my uncle, but he can't take in too much sugar as he has diabetics. I am not too sure  shrug. Can anyone help? These cartoons are really really funny. I love them. yahh

Hi lovefood,

I do not know the answer on figs specifically, however some other news that may assist your uncle....

Gabriel Cousens is currently touring the States with information from his new book on curing diabetes.  I understand that price of admission also includes a copy of his new book.  While the tour isn't very much help for people here in Australia, I am sure that his book must be available separately, perhaps from The Tree of Life.  Sunfood would definitely stock it too.

The book is called "There is a Cure for Diabetes".  I understand it relates to Type II diabetes.

The other thing to watch for is the movie Raw for 30 Days.  They were in post production of this movie...and I don't know exactly what that means, but I learned only a couple of days ago that a further interview with Woody Harrelson was recently done for inclusion in the film.

So, I am unsure how far off the film is, but it might be one to keep an eye out for.

The film follows a group of people all diagnosed with diabetes, who after 30 days of eating a raw diet, are insulin free.

I hope this helps a little.

I know that mangoes and blueberries are good for diabetics. Is it type I or II diabetes?

Many people have cured their type 2 diabetes by undertaking a water fast.  The fasting process regulates all bodily functions, but it would be advisable to at least have some type of medical supervision  especially if the diabetic person has unstable highs and lows in blood sugar.

Here's just a bit of info on it..

and a bit more...

Wow, it's really a lot of information. I will go through each of them.

Rowdy, I feel so surprised at the movie Raw for 30 days. Why these patients with diabetes could all be insulin free after following a raw food diet? What is the trick? Did the raw food diet restore their insulin balance? I once read somewhere that the culprit of diabetes is not because of sugar, it is because of insulin. I hope I did not get it wrong!

Hi Lovefood,

From what I can deduce the patients were under the care of Gabriel Cousens at Tree of Life.  He was in charge of the monitoring of patients from the medical aspect.

There is a young man (I'm unsure if he is one of the Raw for 30 Days patients, but I think he was) who is on the Raw for Life dvd set, and he was an insulin dependent diabetic, and he is now insulin free.

I know very little about diabetes, nor do I know the difference between type I and type II, but when it is available, I anticipate that the dvd will be very illuminating, as will Gabriel Cousens new book.

I was trying to find a trailer of the dvd that *was* available on youtube, but it has since been removed.

Sergei Boutenko overcame type 1 diabetes (childhood) through a raw food diet. You can read about his experiences in his book, Raw food Family.

Doug Graham explains the role of too much fat  in the diet as being a cause of type 2 diabetes (mature onset) and explains the pathophysiology  of it in his book 80/10/10  (pge 30-33).
No doubt this is why even young children on junk food diets are getting "mature onset" diabetes.

Cutting out overt fats from the diet might be one way to start on the road to freedom from diabetes.

But some people are loathe to give up their unhealthy ways of eating, preferring instead to take pills.. and eventually insulin. I've  encountered this attitude  many times when I was a registerd nurse in the hospital system.

Sometimes the hardest part for some people is taking responsibility for their health, and when this is addressed, the  necessary information  will be taken in and health  starts to improve. I feel this to be the  biggest hurdle to the answer of diabetes.

The latest Natural Health & Vegetarian Life mag has a long article on preventing and curing Type 2 diabetes. A doctor featured believes that 95% of cases are curable with a food reigeme. He reccommends only lowGI fruit - so no figs, bananas, mangoes but berries, citrus etc. It isn't raw but vegan, very informative and scientific. The mag has a new website including magazine articles coming late jan, will try to post the address later.

Hi all, I've got the 'There is a Cure for Diabetes' book and basically Cousens' program involves a few weeks of 'green juice fasting' (fasting with just juices of green vegetables) followed by a regime he calls phase I for 3 months (which is made up of vegetables, nuts & seeds, coconut, sea vegetables/superfoods) then what he calls phase II thereafter. Only low GI fruits again. Figs and dates seem to really shoot some people's blood sugars up. Seems like a pretty amazing breakthrough to me.

what is good for anyone with any illness is to take away the cause rather than focus on symptom treatments.

if someone normally has bacon and eggs for a meal and they go and eat fruit they are gonna get better. its not the minerals as such..its just that they are eating real food and the body can do its thing..

yet we have to remember that cooked often causes more than raw can 'cure'.

doug graham has the most long term success with diabetics..all on a high sugar diet.
and yeah, low fat cooked vegan is gonna be a good step too.

fruits only cause blood sugar issues when eaten dried, when not hungry or like most people when eaten on a high fat diet. tree of life is high fat diet.
fresh whole sweet fruit is the most perfect food for humans. every cell in the body is fueled by glucose and or fructose. fruit is the most biological sugar for humans..

doing a water fast or juice fast or phase eating or whatever may help..but what is the person gonnna eat when they get back into everyday life? the same foods that caused the original problem?

id like to see one of those raw for 30 day crew still diabeties free. how is someone gonna eat that way in suburbia? told that fruit is evil and not to eat it...
lets look at the foods and drugs these people did before going to tree of life...almost any diet would have done better..

im into long term solutions. solutions that makes sense and available to everyone. kids in bangladesh have access to bananas, greens and young coconuts. diabetics living in auburn have access to flemington market organic super deals...

who has hours a day to do food prep for life?
