Sorry everyone, I do agree that that isn't chickweed. I haven't seen the real thing since living in Qld but now remember the difference. I was thinking "I thought chickweed flowers were white, not orange" but put that down to my memory!

Thanks for fixing up the thread Jen, it is all back to normal size!

rawfoods bloke, that's great news on your book plans - much luck with it!

I am looking for info regarding which species of wattle/Acacia seeds are edible. anyone know?

Acacia Victoriae is the best species for edible seed, although 'almost' all acacia produce edible seed, many edible raw, but quite astringent when green.
The main problem with acacia seed is that they're so time consuming to harvest & dehusk...
but i guess many seeds are - maybe its just my preocupation with time that gives me that perspective!

Jen: that herb photo that you posted before - with orange flowerheads, it should be 'Thickhead' Crassocephalum crepidioides - I've never tasted it, but it is edible raw, but has a very strong flavour..

Jungle, do not be worried about the chickweed mishap, Its easy to do, & I hope it doesn't deter you from ID'ing herbs in the future! lol

awesome Acacia info, thankyou! I read in a Aboriginal bushfood book that you can pick wattle branches with mature pods, lay them in a sheet and thump them to encourage the seeds out. Will give it a go. I tried a wattleseed that is common around here and it was tasty so I assumed it was edible. I will try to ID it...

I read a book a little while ago by a husband and wife team about edible Australian natives with a lot of info about wattle seeds but I just can't think what it was called. I'll try to find out!

was it 'how to grow bushfoods' by Keith and Irene Smith? (I think that's the title anyway)

Hey Paul,

I just read Eat More Raw by Steve Charter....about permaculture and raw foods...
It's fantastic!! Talks about applying permaculture (principles) to your body.....it is probably the best raw food theory book i've read because it actually talks about growing your own food and being sustainably raw...(and condenses all the other info from ALL the gurus into one source)
maybe it would be another good one for RP to stock, hint hint Wink

I love Eat More Raw by Steve Charter too. He is based in Cornwall in the UK and I love that the book provides good information for people in the UK to eat raw sustainably.

Thanks Paul. Good to know. If it's edible but strong flavoured it would be a great one to add to GS. Just a little amount.

yes, violet leaves are very high in vitamin C, also used to shrink cysts etc...a yummy addition to any salad along with the flowers. Yarrow leaves are also edible but a bit astringent...v. good for circulation.
