I am interested in peoples knowledge of how they were fed as babies and their insight as to how this affects their current health. I know there has been some discussion on B12 with statements made about B12 being produced naturally in a healthy colon and our being born with a supply of B12 in the gut.
This led me to thinking about who has a healthy colon and the impact of early infant feeding patterns on our colon health. Formula feeding is devastating to an infants colon integrity. While breastfeeding promotes healthy bacteria and the correct development of digestion, formula feeding damages the gut bacteria and introduces foreign proteins and molecules which create gut inflammation andcreates prpbs with nutrient absorption. The infant gut is not properly sealed and anything other than breastmilk in the first six months is very damaging.
So, were you breastfed or bottlefed and for how long? Do you feel there is a link between this and current functioning/ peoples ability to produce B12?

I am constantly looking for a pair of friendly nipples laugh

what I believe is that everything is reversible in reklatively short period of time, so whatever happened in past could be reversed completely from the day the right deciision is made, for an adult to completely clean the guts is easy, via fasting SWF and such, few weeks on juicing only and that taking teh acidophilus capsules for few weeks.

the same way the western psychology falsely using the childhood as an excuse and a cause for adults....

Ooooh I love the whole concept of this Becky... and I love to hear from the perspective of someone who often knows what they're talking about!

I'm pretty sure I never got formula, just breast milk, although I was started on solids reasonably early.

Hi becky....well i had the works...completely unecessary c-section (ie: drugged to the hilt), then fully vacc...was breastfed for 2 months but then put onto carnation milk (condensed milk, of all things) when my mum went back to work and also she was told that her milk wasn't satisfying me. oh and farex at 4 months etc.  I do remember my midwife friend saying to me that babes who were fed carnation milk never get rid of the fat that it fills you up with (we were talking about my current weight issues at the time)....anyway, so I'm pretty sure all those other factors helped create my gut issues..I had gastro-enteritis as a baby, then later discovered i was gluten/lactose allergic and had systemic candida.

Given what i do know about a baby's immunological development though, formula feeding would definately stuff EVERYTHING up in some way or another because formula is a foreign protein, doesn't contain the enzymes needed to digest it or the bacteria to colonnise (sp?) the bowel in order to produce more bacteria to assimilate and synthesise nutrients such as b12. We also colonise our bowels with good bacteria through the actual birth process when we come through the birth canal in effect swallowing what we need from the bacteria found there. So the birth process is also a vital component to a baby's gut integrity.

I do agree with Rudy though, this sort of start to health doesn't have to be a life sentance. My gut issues have all cleared up since I worked on it and changed my diet and I now know I am actually absorbing and assmilating my nutrients.

I was breast fed, then put on to mushy stuff made from wheat.. I think it was called Pharax. All my kids were  breast fed, and my son (15) had no cooked food for the first 2 years of his life... I insisted on this, with this specific issue in mind. I guess you could say I'm conducting an experiment on him.. we'll wait and see if he gets asthma or allergies etc.. I do believe there's something in the argument that these factors (before our immune systems have developed) have an impact on us later in life, but like you Rudolph, I don't think we should use this as an excuse.

Babies and b12.. wouldn't mothers milk have b12?

Brett..Gabriel Cousins places the B12 value in breastmilk between 180-300 micrograms (pg) per ml at any given time on any given day (ah the wonder of breasts!)...but then you also have all the co-factors as well.

Rudolf you are too funny!

And Rawgasm, I love your straightforward answer rofl

I was breastfed for a month and then formula fed because my mum's milk dried up because she was dealing with a lot of trauma at the time i.e. my dad was having an affair and threatening to leave.

I definately think being fed on dairy, wheat and soy based formulas contributed a lot to my IBS, food allergies, skin allergies, sinusitus and other health problems which started in childhood. I was a sensitive child to start with anyway, so it certainly didn't help.  My mum also smoked while she was pregnant with me and was under alot of stress so that probably contributed too.

My Mum tried for a couple of days to breast feed but it hurt! Then it was formula, that said I did get the colostrum. I imagine I was on cereals as soon as she could get them into me. She also started giving me milky black tea at 6 months! I finally got off the tea last year at 38 and it wasn't easy. I've always had problems with digestion except on a gluten free high veggie diet.
I think breast milk is best but so is a good follow on diet but if we make an effort we can clear our colons, rebuild gut flora and make our lives much better.

my son was breastfed till 2,

however idiotic pediatric nurses in hospital wher he was born forced into him secretly some formulas doing their own private research without permission

(If I ever wanted to be a killer...)

I remember when he was about 6 months and the fruit season started (he is a jully baby) and I gave him first appricot - the expression of his face, the eating enthusiasm (to put it plitely and nicely), the exitement noises he was making laugh

In some African societies, the whole family subsists on human breast milk. All of the limited food resources are given to the woman to support her milk production, and she literally feeds the family. I know how bad this sounds, but when you think about it, it's pretty clever, and quite efficient. The human cow?
