It's interesting to note that vegetarian babies are often thinner than meat eating counterparts! Just think how this links in with recent findings that heavy babies are more likely to be heavier adults.

My son was breastfed till he was 3years and 4 months...an exclusively for the first 6 months and then till he was a year old he ate very liitle as he preferred breast milk. And he was HUGE!!!!!!!!!!! rolleyes A real little michelen man!! He weighed 10 1/2 kgs by 6 months of age and I was vegan at the time (not raw) and he never ate meat till his dad started giving it to him after his 2nd birthday (another story all together!!)

But i don't think he'll end up an obese adult...he turns 3 1/2 next week and he's slimmed down now but is still heavy ( about 23kgs) and is about 115cm tall!! And an interesting thing to note was that when he was consuming no meat or dairy up till age 2, and after his dad starting feeding him crap (in my opinion) his growth rate slowed right down and he now keeps getting sick all the time too. Very frustrating after all the hard work I've put into supporting his health!!

OG- i totally feel yr frustration! heart disease is the #1 killer of womyn in the US & i honestly believe that the stress our spouses/partners bring into the relationship is partly to blame!
i must say, i think genetics has a huge say in how we turn out. my husbands mother is obese, his father is not & he and his brothers were all "large" babes (8.3 lbs- 9.13 lbs) & none are anywhere near overweight (especially my d-a-m-n hubby... grrr). my mother and father are both overweight, my brother is not (and, at 7.7 lbs, he was considered a "fat" baby! can you believe it!? he was put on a diet @ 3mo and everything... ridiculous) and i am not (according to hubby- i could weigh 10 lbs and still think i was fat ). my boys have ranged in birthweight from 8.3 lbs- 10.4 lbs. all are above average for their ages except my oldest who is very lean and tall for his. my older 2 were form fed and my younger 2 are bf. i was veg for the 3rd preg and vegan for the 4th (10.4 lbs & 9.2 lbs respectively). for obvious reasons, the 4th looked incredibly tiny to hubby and i but huge to the drs and nurses (and his ped).
i am curious what a 5th babe would come out like if i were to have a raw preg...
i am so loving the raw news regarding women issues (especially with regards to childrearing and such!)- keep it up Sheryl & Piers!

I just heard on the radio while dropping my girl off at school that 74% of newborns are now overweight. This figure is compared with the study of newborn's weight 20 years ago.  74% is HUGE.

something to that effect was on the local news just the other night.
if you look at the era that spawned the 6-8lbs average healthy baby size (at least in the us) one will notice that the same era spawned the "science knows better than nature" mode of thinking; including formula vs. breast, allowing baby to "cry it out", etc... i was talking with hubby about this and said, "why is that they pay so much attention to body-types when speaking of adults and don't think it has any such basis on children?"
it is ridiculous to stick everyone in the same que... sort of like keeping all japanese in work camps because we're at war with japan.
oh, wait... that's right- the us did that! silly me...
i still can't help but think how much money is wasted on obvious issues. i find it difficult to believe anything that has to do with an outdated mode of thinking (like growth charts which are based on formula fed infants... written in the '50's- lol)
recently, there was a report that said we should begin introducing COOKED GRAINS to our babies prior to 6mos(!!!) so as to avoid any sensitivity... so, somewhere, because this was released by the aap, there's a ped telling his patient's mother to go ahead and give him some powdered, enriched rice cereal at 2mos- simply because the aap is the powers that be and no one dares to question the "authority".
paging dr. nestle!
oh, those growth charts are also based on babes born to women who were told to keep smoking so they didn't gain too much weight... grrrr....

(sorry about the rant... lol)

My mum was not at all pleased I decided to breast feed my babies. She thought I was doing something pornographic, I think. In her mind it equatic to child abuse or something.  I ignored her and did what I wanted anyway lol the dratted daughter. She was over the moon and gloating to every one that would listen that my youngest brother was eating just solids at 6 months old! No milk. She was from the bottle generation.  She always had mixed info about breastfeeding. She thought that I had to give the baby water. I'd say, "No mum, that's only with bottle feeding. With breast milk they get water through the breast mik for the first 6 months you can feed them solely that." She'd just shake her head at me and glare.

her attempt at feeding I remember is putting the most uncomfortable chair in the loungreroom and when the baby bit her nipple she stopped. No more tries. Nothing. Still, it seems to be the way that being a kid you go against the grain sometimes.

If all these nutritionists are doing such a dang good job and giving the right info, why are the adult population struggling with overweight teenagers and themselves?

yep - i was about to mention that re the growth charts based on formula fed babies born to smoking mothers!

The other thing is that the baby's weight tells us nothing about their size. Both of my live babies were 9 and 10lb respectively and both were VERY long and lean, I DO love a chubby bub to cuddle - although I do get shocked at the rolls upon rolls of some babies...

Just out of interest - all of my friends who were Michelin babies are now the skinniest grown-ups I know!

Similar story to yours Organic_Girl, my son was 12kg at 6 months old and exclusively breastfed while I was on a vegetarian cooked diet.  He has now stretched out to 20kg at 4 years old.  I wonder if its got more in relation to a babies diet though - I recall reading somewhere that dietary habits are created based on what is eaten in the first 3 years of life.

All the fat babies we know grew up skinny teenagers and the skinny babies who were malnourished as children became fat.

So you will get all sorts. Babies who are somewhat chubby as babies is normal especially with drinking lots of milk. Its natural for a baby to contain some fat for survival, even when healthy. A malnourished baby on the otherhand where the mother tries to fit in with other modelling babies is a big no no and ive seen lots of them lately.

Most of those baby studies are based on the mother purely givng the baby too much junk and not enough of the healthful foods. (babies at 2 yrs old dont need trans fatty acid biscuits, chocolates and lollies everyday etc)

There are also many studies on malnourished babies who also become fat as adults.

This is jsut personal opinions http://ask.metafilter.com/42621/butterfilter
