Hi everyone....especially the athletes amongst you!

I'm looking for some high protein sources that help me to pack muscle on. Before I was raw, I used to use protein powders like Aussie Bodies and they were fantastic for me in terms of building muscle.

I've just bought some more mesquite and my body is loooving it, I am practically craving the stuff. I also use spirulina daily but I'm not crazy about the taste so I only use 1 tbsp, whereas I can use 4 tbsps of mesquite in a smoothie.

Other than greens, what other sources are there??? I've heard that hemp powder is great but illegal as a human source. Any thoughts on that? What do you athletes do for high protein?

I've been training quite a lot the last 3 months since I've been raw but I'm not muscling up like I used to, hence these questions!!! Perhaps it's just a transition thing but I realy do feel my body wants more good quality protein.

All wisdom gratefully accepted. :-)

Hi Lovespirit,

I am afraid, that You ask the question at the wrong time on this forum.

Seems that only politicaly correct answer would be - eat tons of greens and tons of fruits.

Lots of love, hopefully You find the answers.

Hi Rudy

It's great to hear from you - I hope you're well! :-)

I don't understand your response at all though. Why is it the 'wrong time' and what is not 'politically correct' about my question?!

There are plenty of well-muscled athletes on this site....and I know there are RV body-builders....it's a perfectly valid question to want to know how best to give my body extra protein when I'm increasing my training???

Love Spirit,

Rudy is not insulting you at all - and not saying there is anything wrong with your post.
He is referring to a post in the raw chat section - Organic Raw Eggs (or something like
that).  Read it to get the perspective.

Good luck with sourcing more/better protien sources.
I am afraid I cannot help you as I have only been following a high raw diet for a very
short while - still learning.

Take Care,
S.

Hi Sharon

Thanks for explaining, that's very sweet of you. I know Rudy wouldn't be rude, he's just not that kind of person. I just had no idea what he was on about! Clearly I haven't read the eggs post as I'm not interested in eating eggs. Thanks again and hopefully I'll hear from some athletes at some point. :-)

If a sedentary person takes up weightlifting, they may need to increase their protein intake.  But don't forget that they may also need to increase their carbohydrate intake as well.  After all, your body is burning carbs whilst your working out, not protein, and those carbs need to be replaced.  Thus I don't see the logic in consuming lots of foods that contain higher percentages of protein over carbs when you're doing strength training.  It just creates nutritional imbalance and causes your body to convert excess protein into sugar to correct the problem, which is a waste of your body's energy.

Having said that if you want to eat higher protein foods, blackberries, apricots, spinach, watercress, seeds, almonds, above ground vegetables and legumes are high protein.

Hi LS, Chia seeds and Goji berries are said to contain all of the neccessary amino acids to help the body create protein.

Ooh thanks Jen, sometimes I don't enjoy too much sweet fruit so the chia seeds sound great.

They are awesome in smoothies. I just squeeze some oranges into my blender and add a tablespoon or two of chia and then go have a shower or do something for a little while. Then I blend with some greens and voila! yummy smoothie. If you didn't want sweet you could add some lime or lemon. They are virtually tasteless in a smoothie and so they can be added anywhere. You could blend them into green juice as well... the creative juices are starting to flow!

Great tips Jen. So far I have not soaked anything as I'm pretty spontanous with my food. But I could cope with soaking some chias in some OJ while I run ;-)

Hi am a new rawer and have been looking around for super foods to consume in an effort to eat less and only of super high quality organic foods.
From what i understand spirulina is absolutly packed full of protein, is raw, and can buy organic. I mix 2 or 3 tsp in my daily super smoothie made up of.

1/4 cup cacao nibs ground
1/4 cup soaked goji berry
1 heaped tsp of maca
1 tsp of siberian ginseng
1 tsp of blood root
2 tsp of spirulina
1 cup of ice
1/2 cup rejuvelac
1 banana frozen or otherwise

I buy my herbs like the ginseng from austral herbs who sell wholesale and mostly organic or wild crafted
I also buy most of my stuff in bulk from biodistributors in tasmania. Even with the post included it works out cheaper than locally. They are super lovely as well and very quick delivery.

At first i really didnt like this smoothie but it seems to grow on you and if you make use of the ice it tastes way allot better than without. I guess it numbs your tastebuds
I in the future may include organic chlorella, barley and wheat powder

Best Regards
Damian

I was having a flick over my caloronutrient charts and was interested to find that most of the sweet fruits that are in season now are lower in protein and fat than the average sweet fruits.  Apples, bananas, figs, pears, grapes, persimmons and dates are all between 1-4% fat & protein.  Average for sweet fruits is about 6%.

I find this interesting because now is also the time that nuts (high in fat & protein) are falling from the trees.

Coincidence?... Or divine planning?...

I've heard that hemp powder is great but illegal as a human source.

That it may be so but I have brought it before and used it in shakes.

It is only illegal as a human source in Australia and New Zealand. It is perfectly legal for consumption in the USA, Canada, UK and Europe.

Apparently, Chia seeds are an excellent (and legal) complete source of dietary protein.

I don’t know how much you would have to consume for your requirements though.

The body-building muscles on Storm Talifero from the Garden Diet are pretty impressive. He has been a raw vegan for over 30 years. Perhaps his website will give you some useful hints and tips:

I've bought hemp seed protein powder from happy planet
http://www.happyplanet.com.au/page.php?PageID=4
They can sell it here through the front 'Dr Skoobies' is a nice name Smiley .... that you can feed it to your pets but you as a human can't consume unless you have bought it from overseas from them -but yes I can only 'admit publicly' to have only fed it to my pets  rofl

This is what is says for the flour, not the protein powder (i couldn't be bothered finding the page for it)
NOT SOLD FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION IN AUSTRALIA OR NZ

Otherwise, where hemp foods for people are legal, use like as a flour replacement (up to 25% of ANY flour can be replaced in a recipe with Fine Hemp Seed Flour). Or it can be mixed into smoothies, juices, yoghurt, sprinkled on cereals, salads or whatever your tastes fancy.

I've added it to green smoothies that I have fed to my 'pets'   lol

However, if protein or food had anything real major to do with building muscle then people would be in kitchens not gyms.  muscles will grow and adapt to overload - if you eat sufficient calories - even in 811 proportions your body will get enough protein from it to build the muscles.

people worry that they are losing muscle when they drop weight on raw food, its just they are dropping fat and water and they dont want to admit they never had the muscles they thought they had.

sure I am thin and 63kg, however when I ate cooked food I was 72kg and puffy. now my body is rock hard - I didn't lose any muscle, i just lost the other stuff.  In fact if I wasn't training as hard as i've been for the last 12 months, when i was 72kg I would have probably been around 55kg in terms of leanness at the time if I had been raw.   I've increased my muscle mass significantly since going raw.  However its going to take a LOT of years to look the size of the muscle meatheads going around - but I know when it comes down to pound for pound lean muscle strength I am probably stronger than they are.
