ive been taking a product by vital greens which is a pea protein...not everyday...i know its not raw but is a little extra protein...it seems to be a better source than whey protein which makes me feel sick..i  also use the vital greens regular drink everyday as a replacement to the vitamineral green you used to be able to buy here...check out their site...vitalgreens...

i weighed in at 62 this morn. i know i will dip under 60kg when i return to bike racing, this weekend. us cyclists and runners are always trying to get lighter..ie lazy..prefer not carrying any excess up the climbs..

i flew up mt lofty today in record time. paced by a 7 A graders..at the top only 2 of them were in front of me. i was wearing no shirt, running shorts and a back pack with vegan on the back..unorthodox cycling apparel but you stil get training stimulis if your fashion doesnt impair function..lol!

Harley mate with what you do and and are capable off I have often wondered why you dont challenge yourself against yourself in the world arena like the Olympics or France and show the world how you and anyone can beat the many on drugs and supplements. And be an even greater leader and shining example for vegan and raw for the world. Show the world not just the raw community about raw vegan. Just my questions I have because I think so much of you as many of us do.

thanks for the motivation..
ive raced in europe. its cut throat drug scene with sponsor politics etc. ive been asked to race for www.teamvegan.org in california this year and still may do that. but with a break of 4 years due to an accident and ongoing joint issues id rather hit the states with some racing under my belt to see if my knees can hold up.

its one thing to be riding a few hundred km a week and train with national riders..its another level of demand to be racing with em. im racing this saturday. first road race back.

it doesnt really matter how fast you can ride or how many races you can win. pro cycling is all about attracting sponsorship by being a drone puppet that keeps everyone happy. being an outspoken athlete as i am doesnt attract much positive light. other athletes hate it  or just ridicule it.

we live in a world where its easier to get a meat pie and coke than a really ripe banana. when push comes to shove not many people will back you up cos money owns most.

for the drug expose on the olympics one only has to read 'positive' by werner reiterer. imagine a raw vegan athlete competing in the final and dissing coke and mcdonalds and promoting more sustainable life practises..the cheque signers would be pop'n aortas...

or maybe im making up excuses cos i dont wanna do the hard yards..or maybe ive just seen it with other drug free raw vegan athletes..
either way im still going training in the morning..rain, hail or shine. cos when im suffering i feel alive.

Harley

I hear what you're saying....but couldn't you turn your difference into an ADVANTAGE on the pro scene??? Being different IS newsworthy. Look at Lance Armstong!!!!

And think of some sponsors you could approach that would LOVE your diet....a truly integrous organization that really wants to support you. It might take some creative thinking but they are out there!

People in the corporate world are really starting to connect the dots and it is super-trendy to be green now, so the tide is slowly turning in your favour. :-)

don't know if I should start a new topic...but I have a question on deficiency in calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Inituitively I feel that I maybe difficient in all three.  My diet has been less than opitmal...and now my body is paying for it.  I have very sore muscle after exercise, swelling in the feet, emotional disturbances...basically I am out of balance.

I am dehydrated...not enough fluids from both water and juicy fruits and certainly not eating any greens.  I have badly abused body..not intentionally but want to bring it back into balance and harmony.

i agree its super trendy to be green, but eating green for breakfast, lunch and dinner...thats too extreme. teamvegan.org is based in california and we have lance armstrongs old team doctor. he has donated his time to treat the team for free if needed. but lance wasnt different in a social way. he had a condition that marketing loves. his sporting life was the ultimate fairytale comeback story and nike loved it. i know i sold a 100k of bikes cos of lance. he got more people into cycling...

i have a hard time fitting in with cooked vegans, writing for vegan magazines etc. getting corporate backing would be like finding organic durian in nullabor roadhouses. cos going raw is such a personal thing, it doesnt really envoke sponsorship ideals. lucky for me my lifestyle doesnt require mega sponsorship contracts..lol!

the owner of teamvegan.org is a raw vegan himself. but rarely talks about it for fear of scaring away sponsors, athletes etc. he promotes organic vegan instead.

and on calcium etc..number one source of minerals for humans is greens. number two source is fruit.

and number one source of vitamins for humans is fruit. number two source is greens.
by your post youve answered your own question on what you need to do. its that simple.

Harley where does your focus need to be if you were to get past the whole cooked vegan thing and be at peace with that?

i just re read my post and it wasnt very clear..

i meant that i have a hard time writing articles for cooked vegan publications..i have buckleys chance writing something real truthful for non vegan publications..

it comes down to me saying or writing im 'supposed' to say rather than what i 'meant' to say.

even doug graham has been banned from the raw spirt festival.  how is that possible that the person whom has more people 100% raw vegan thru his writings is banned from the biggest raw festival in the world?

On the subject of protein on a raw vegan diet ... in my opinion you can't go past Spirulina. It's 60 to 71% protein. One of the best sources of protein available.... in my opinion the best. Beefsteak is about 28%! then factor in that it is cooked making it much less available, plus it is acidic. Spirulina is the only protein source that is alkaline.

Everyone is so focused on Carbs for energy, which is great but what I don't understand is that when you are doing a lot of exercise you are really using up a lot of your body resources and wearing them down, which is fine, but then it needs to be repaired. It is when you are resting after exercise that you get the growth. The muscle fibres get damaged from the excess overload. Then in the process of repairing they grow bigger.... AND the only thing the body needs for Growth and Repair is Protein! It is also important for the maintenance of enzymes and hormones for metabolism and digestion.

The problem is everyone compares it to cooked protein which is very different to raw protein. When protein in cooked you body is only able to use a small amount of it as the cooking denatures it. Whereas raw protein has not been damaged and the body is able to use it 100%.

I see so many people struggle with raw. I often wonder if it's because they completly disregard the importance of balancing there diet. Making sure that they are getting adequate quantaties of Greens, fruit, salads/vegies, and fats. Plus the equally important ratio of Protein, Carbs and Fats. Leave one of these out and you will get cravings.... therefor causing you to struggle on the raw food diet and a cooked diet at that!

I have been raw for exactly the same amount of time as Durianrider... (Hi DR!) and I have never struggled with being raw, at first I actually tried to add some cooked food but just didn't want it so I just let go of it. I have been 100% the whole time with no problems. But I am fully aware that if i eat too much of one thing and don't naturally balance out all that I have mentioned above I don't feel right.. it's something that I have done naturally and have learnt why I do this. I exercise daily, always have even pre raw, I weight train, run and walk. I have extremly low body fat. I don't measure it.. what for? I just have to look at myself to now that it is low..some would say to low for a female. But hey I am happy, balanced love to eat lots of good raw food, love my exercise, love life, my family, love pushing myself, (something I try not to do as much now!!) my goodness even love my house, car, and all of the unessacary gadgets we own!!.. And I love my organic spirulina and seaweeds....

Having said all of that everyone if very different and what works for one doesn't always work for another. Some people need more protein than others and I feel that we should acknowlegde that and not make them feel that it is not right. So to the original question.. If you are looking for a Great source of Protein go for Spirulina!

And Annette maybe that is something you should try, along with some seaweed which is so full of minerals it amazing, and I know you like to exercise so I would say that your body is craving Protein.. all you can do is try adding both Spirulina and  seaweed.. I have a feeling that within a couple of weeks you will really start to feel great. Just between you and I ...Protein is the secret for women!!!!

all the best

Hi Karen

Thanks heaps for sharing your experience; it was invaluable for me. I do use 1 tbsp spirulina every day in my smoothie but find that any more than that is too much for me taste-wise...hence my liking for mesquite as well.

I think this post has been really handy for me in hearing what works for others and why. :-)

Karen

Thank you for you wonderful post.  A lovely, caring person on the forum took the time to PM me and said the same thing too about spirulina and the missing link in my raw diet.  I have bought some a few months ago and had it once and it tasted disgusting....but, am experimenting with it to make it tast better.  ie mixing it with o/j and chia seeds and other combinations in a green smoothie.

I want persist to persist with the spirulina and other superfoods because I worry that my children are not getting a balance of the right foods too.  I don't care what my body misses out on but I want them to have the best future possible.....I do care but you know what I mean.

Karen, when I read your post, I felt your sense of balance and calmness.  Once I have dealt with all my emotional issues I would love to be able to say "I have low body fat but I don't have to measure it, what for, I can see it".  A mental place I am striving to achieve.  Thank you for your post.  It just confirmed the place I want to be.

Hear hear missgiggles!!!

I don't know the facts about that situation but I certainly share your sentiments about less dissent on this forum in general.

I must say, I am constantly amazed (and sometimes distressed) when I see people on tihs site having shots at other people on this site. If we can't get on as a community, despite our common passion and goals, then what hope is there for society???

Without sounding egotistical, I'm sure many of us would consider ourselves more progressive or enlightened physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually than the masses. So, if we can't do it, what right do we have to point the finger of blame at the rest of the world's population that is also still evolving???

It sounds to me like this would be a great place for people to practice expressing different points of view in a kind and non-aggressive manner.

Love to all

DW and DG have both been instrumental in bringing many people to raw as have Victoria Boutenko, Gabriel Cousens, Alissa Cohen, Roe Gallo, Anne Wigmore, Leslie Kenton, Dr Robert Young, and more. We are here to support each other through all types of raw diets not to push people into our way of raw whether it be Doug's, David's, Victoria's, Alissa's, Gabriel's, whoevers...

It's not our job to say who is the best raw guru because it will be different for everyone and will often change as our raw journey goes along.

We should be grateful to all these people. They have worked hard to get raw to where it is today and they all help somebody.

Please don't knock the raw 'gurus'. (for lack of a better word!) Be patient with others whose ideas are different to your own.
