Hi all,

I was wondering whether there were any straight-forward lists of which nuts are heat-treated and which ones are ok as labelled? I understand that Cashews and Macadamias are supposed to be no-nos but what about the others? It would be really good to form a list that we could post here....

Also I was reading the really interesting thread below about preparing raw olives. I don't have access to fresh olive fruit or time to prepare my own and was wondering if organic olives are generally raw?

Cheers!

Birdie.

I found this really interesting article on nuts here: http://www.living-foods.com/articles/nuts.html

It's called WHAT A RAW-FOODER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT NUTS by Thomas E. Billings

Really interesting reading.

If you keep an eye out you may find local in-shell nuts. Whereabouts do you live? I live in Tasmania and have found in the last few weeks hazlenuts and walnuts, including a couple of big, old foragable walnut trees  ohyeah Autumn is the time for nut harvesting in cooler climates but it seems to be earlier in other climates... I just buy almonds if I can't find any in-shell nuts these days Smiley

Also, different farms have different processing methods so if in doubt you can contact the farm directly to ask questions!

I am wondering, is it possible to get some (edible) raw salt-free olives? Can they be soaked in salt-free water?

I Live in Sydney close to the city. Unfortunately everything is really expensive and because I don't have a car (don't want one so never learnt to drive!) so I'm kind of limited to locally supplied produce. Thankfully a farmers market runs once a month near my house but most of the produce isn't organic.

Has anyone in Sydney found a good market for produce which sells raw nuts ? I'd love to find fresh olives too!!

I'm starting to feel like I need to escape out of the city!! I'm loving reading about people on this forum who live close to farms and beautiful natural environments. My dream would be to take off and live in the blue mountains but that would probably require a car GRR ;p  oh well! Actually I'm studying and have to be in the city each day!! I do love the city but I think there is a kind of awakening that happens with being vegan and another one which is happening the more raw I delve. it's like the layers of consumption fall away and something soulful calls us towards the most natural life we can lead. That's different for each of us of course, but there is that pull isn't there?

Anyway a long way off the topic of nuts!! Smiley

Tora Chan, cashews can be classed as truly raw when they have been heated for shelling. Most of the time high heat is used in the shelling process. I have an article here somewhere. I'll have to dig it out. I'd get them to check with their supplier what temperature the cashews reach at any time during the shelling process.

Gosia, I think the peruvian ones we get in are salt free. I've asked for information on the whole process. I'll let you know as soon as I have it.

Hey Birdcall, contact www.giftsfromgaia.com. Gaye is awesome and if it's raw and in Sydney she knows about it! She has awesome pot lucks and picnics.

Hey Birdcall,

Hate to give away the location of my secret stash, but seeing as you asked...  Theres a couple of macadamia trees on Allens Pde, Bondi Junction, near Council St.  Theres tons of fresh nuts falling daily from them at the moment.  Apparently there are other macadamia trees around the area, but I haven't found them.

Hi y'all n Sensation n Steve

I'm on the Gifts from Gaia mailing list but so far I haven't been able to make any of the meet-ups - hoping to get to one in the next month or so. That said I've met some great people through Julie's not-cooking classes at conscious choice.

I can speak for the cashews sold on this site!! Soooooo yummy Smiley unfortunatley they didn't last longer than a week in my household - they were gobbled up in smoothies and in a delicious raw tart. I blended some of them with the juice and flesh from a young coconut and it's unbelievable how creamy it tasted!!

Steve thanks for the heads up!! I live on the other side of the bridge but I'll keep a look out for my own stash. I was reading a thread the other day about people finding Dandelions for smoothies and I'm loving the idea that there is a Wild and Edible city out there. I just don't know what to look for yet.

Theres a macadamia nut tree in my backyard  cool

Its magnificent, truly spectacular tree! Unfortunately it also creates alot of work, messes up our bbq area badly. We have a great nut cracker for it (brother in law made it) and i still consider the work to crack them more often than not isnt worth it. I eat alot of macadamia nuts, but if i want a quick snack i tend to go for the purchased cashews before my own nuts. So while my nuts are truly organic and raw, i still have to weight up the time and energy used to crack a heap of nuts to eat. So while in shell nuts are ideal, not always practical, just a thought.

Our nuts are great but sitting at the bar socialising, when it doesnt matter how long it takes. For those who have never cracked open a macadamia nut, if you dont have a proper macadamia nut cracker, u need a hammer and to put it between some mats (so it doesnt fly away), its tedious.

And to add a sad thought to the day, i am actually thinking of having ours cut down. The thought of it makes me want to cry! It will be a sad loss for the world if its cut down, but gotta prioritise, and were trying to simplify our life.
