On the whole, my skin tone has improved dramatically since starting to eat raw and juicing.

I don't yet have "the glow" as most raw vegans do, but I am getting there and I am starting to get positive comments from friends and strangers about how healthy I look.

However, I still have dark circles under my eyes.

I am getting enough sleep, so it must be a sign of something more serious. I have always been a big drinker, so wondering if it may have something to do with my liver. Having said that, I gave up drinking for two years but the dark circles were still there.

I don't drink much water, could that be the cause?

Does anyone know what may be causing the dark circles and what I can do to help reduce/clear them?

Thank you for any advice.

when was the last time you had a sip/smoke?
when was the last time you drank 4 litres of water in a day?
when was the last time you got a month of as much sleep as you cared for? ie early night and awaken when refreshed.
when was the last time you gave your liver a break from fat consumption?

all too common i see in the raw world is people trying to burn the candle at both ends..but as raw fooders we know that flames only destroy...

hey KittyK,

There's a few things going through my head right now. Dark circles can be caused by stress on the liver.

The liver is a major cleansing organ

When we detox, toxins that the body is storing is released and filtered through cleansing organs like the liver.

This could be a sign that your liver is working really hard. I don't know for sure... but this is what springs to mind for me.

I remember when my mother did a liver cleanse a few years back how the shadows under her eyes disappeared.

There's probably other things it could be as well. Just a thought...

Well I have had the dark circles for years, so nothing to do with being raw. To be honest, I thought raw would make them clear up.

when was the last time you had a sip/smoke?

Last time I had a drink (white wine) was five days ago. Last time I had a smoke was eight years ago.

when was the last time you drank 4 litres of water in a day?

Never. I went through a six month phase last year where I forced myself to drink 2 litres everyday. Nowadays I would be lucky to drink 500mls of pure water a day. However, I do drink 250mls - 1 litre of vegetable juice everyday, so I am getting some water from vegetables.

when was the last time you got a month of as much sleep as you cared for? ie early night and awaken when refreshed.

Always go to bed early during the week because have to get up for work at 6.00am. Often sleep in the afternoons during the weekend. Rarely feel refreshed, as always disturbed by something during the night (neighbours dogs barking, our cats scratching the litter tray, possums fighting or mating outside the bedroom window) However, as I said, had the dark circles for years, since I was a teenager and I use to get plenty of sleep then.

when was the last time you gave your liver a break from fat consumption?

Apart from a couple of glasses of wine once a week, avocado in my salad and the odd square of chocolate, I don't really consume that much fat. I also do a 24 hour juice fast once a week.

all too common i see in the raw world is people trying to burn the candle at both ends..

I rarely burn the candle at both ends. My favourite pass time is lazing around and relaxing!

Well I have had the dark circles for years, so it can't be detox.

I have got the book "The Liver Cleansing Diet" by Dr Sandra Cabot - maybe I should give it go.

Maybe not, it could still be liver though or it could be other things.

Many raw 'gurus' believe it can takes years for the body to completely clean out. You've been eating the old way for a long time and raw for a short time. Patience patience.

That was the book my mum used for her cleanse and she looked amazing. I believe that there is still a lot of cooked food in there but if you are eating all organic and doing high raw and not 100% raw then that could be ok for you.

A liver cleanse couldn't hurt anyhow. I've been thinking of doing one for ages. I'm a little scared to tell the truth of what will happen... after all my years of drinking like a fish! Well that's not true, I've never drank anything I've peed in!

Yes there is a lot of cooked food in it, a lot of meat dishes too I think, but I can adapt it. I am eating 100% organic and doing about 90% raw, 9% cooked vegan and 1% meat.

Well that's not true, I've never drank anything I've peed in!

So you are not into urine therapy then! A friend of mine swears by it. Yucky.

Your weekly fasting could be a good sign of self control.
If you drink alcohol every week then can you start going dry ?
More intensive exercise?
+2hrs intensive exercise each day?
More fresh air?
Spend less work less?
Less toxins from shampoos , soaps , household cleansers,shower steam,skin care products,air conditioning,new carpets,paints,office carpets,?
Less new car offgassing from fittings?
Less drying electrical/woodfire heating?

Chocolate : the odd square sounds like maybe good self control.
Can you go on a diet which is free of chocolate and sugar?
Has that been low sugar chocolate with those artificial sweeteners or has it been chocolate with vege oil instead of milk fat?

Hmmm, while i agree dark circles are not a good sign of health, as a greek mine occur fairly naturally, they may get worse when im tired, but are something that have been there as long as i remember and unless my eyes are puffy too they arent something to worry about.

Are you mediteranean decent? Just curious, because it is kinda a feature. Just a thought anyway.

I don't want to go dry, I enjoy wine. Had the dark circles before I started drinking.

+2hrs intensive exercise each day?

 rofl

More fresh air?

Already get plenty.

Spend less work less?

I hardly spend anything. Bit of organic food, bit of organic wine, I am set.

Less toxins from shampoos, soaps, household cleansers, skin care products, air conditioning, new carpets, paints, office carpets?

Have not used toxic shampoos, soaps, household cleansers, skin care products for over eight years. Don't have carpet at home. Always avoid paint fumes.

Less new car offgassing from fittings? Less drying electrical/woodfire heating?

Don't have a new car or woodfire heating.

No.

1% meat is from raw fish - sushi. I have it once or twice a month. Very small serving.

My emotions are pretty even.

No.

I do have an olive complexion though. When I was a child, people often asked if I was Spanish.

I did not realise that dark circles were a feature on mediteranean people.

I did not have dark circles when I was a child. Started in my teenage years and got worse ever since.
