Hey Dr Harley! Something I've wondered about you that I'd like to know...what was your transition to raw vegan like? I know you were vegan beforehand. So did you have a raw gourmet phase before 811rv?? And if so what was the transition like for you between raw and 811? Looking forward to hearing your stories!

Love the persimmon photos too, I've just been reading up on different varities as am planning to grow some and am amazed at how many different varities are about. All degrees of deliciousness I am sure...

Ok, not going to debate if too much fat is good or not. But i do have to ask, why do i feel better consuming fats???

When ive eaten alot of fruit and limited my nut intake my skin got very dry, my hair lank, and i didnt feel that great. When i ate fats unrestrained my skin improved and i felt better. I still eat predomininantly fruit, but i do seem to genuinely need a certain amount of fats in a day no matter how much else of anything i consume. So am i really doing it wrong or is it possible that some people do better on a higher level of fat (im not saying i consume heaps, but would be more than 10%, on 10% i feel unwell).

Also, I seem to be having digestion issues sometimes, and i get the niggling feeling im not absorbing all my food properly, im losing weight (not too much yet, but my family is voicing concern, and a few more kilos and im at risk of being underweight). Sometime i cant stand fruit and the thing that goes down best is munching away on avacados. If im at risk of being underweight, and i feel better consuming a certain level of fats, why should i really consider cutting it back??? Genuine question, not an argument.

ties free life? ha! ive met buddhist monks in thailand that own 3 possessions that laughed when i said i 'travel lightly'..

when im naked living in a fruit forrest with zero material possessions..then im living the tie free life...

kbstr, when you read 811, did it make sense to you?

and on weight..there are guys same height and weight as me ie 60kg and 183cm that are bed riden. cos they are all fat and bone and no muscle. then there are guys lighter than me or same or similar that are world class endurance athletes. ie they are all muscle and bone and single digit % body fat. so its a hard question to answer unless i know the person personally.

jungle, my transition? well even as a cooked vegan i still ate fruit for breakfast and lunch. i still did 100% raw weeks before important bike races and or lab tests. when i wanted to be on top of my game i was raw, and when i didnt care, i ate cooked. i followed the 'fit for life' cooked natural hygiene approach. but eventually i came to the conclusion that i want to be 'on top of my game' all the time..so i began a quest to stay 100% raw and not end up guzzling cooked carbs that everyone on the raw path was ending up doing. i remember talking with david wolfe in person in england. when i asked him 'how much do i need to eat?' daves reply was 'i dont know mate, just get it in!' so i got it in but still didnt know what i was doing. still didnt know that 60bananas a day was the amount of fruit i needed back then racing in europe. still didnt know that eating more than 10% calories from fat longterm was very dangerous to my health and performance. still didnt know that if i crave cooked food, honey, refined sugars and or eating a meal of avocado's, nuts etc that i was just undereating sweet fruit..

i was fortunate that when i committed to raw that i met other raw crew straight away. i stayed with the awsome raw chef duo piers and sheryl and got to try raw pizzas, pesto's, cashew cheeze dips, lasagnes, choc cakes, ice creams etc. i remember staying up all night reading raw forums and eating a bucket of flax crackers! lol! out of all my prepped food experiences, those that i shared with the raw community on the gold coast were the most stand out. raw eating is very social and you must be prepared to meet new crew at the drop of a hat..

i soon learned what foods i could sustain eating and what made me feel best. i soon preferred spending more time eating a meal than it took to prep it. i soon began living the mono meal experience. ie one type of fruit at a time when im hungry till im full. like breakfast this morning was 2.1kg of cert organic calmyra grapes.

its very rare i do more than 2 ingredients in 1 meal. and when i do its normally a green soup like parsley, celery, tomatoe, spinach, silverbeet, dill.

i spent a few months with doug in washington, costa rica and australia. saw what goes on behind the scenes and learnt quickly what i needed to improve on. each time i read 811 or watch or listen to one of dougs recordings i pick up something new or see a different angle on it. or i get another clue to why someone has gone back to cooked and or animal products. (most common reason is longterm undereating calories from sweet fruit.)

so that was my transition. i was looking for away out of feeling bloated, thirsty, switched off, lazy and weak after meal time to feeling electric, hyped, sustainable, genuine, sweet and lean after massive mono meals of tree ripened sugar. as an ultra endurance cyclist i had a lof of fear cos no one was riding the distance i was. but i had to feel the fear and do it anyway. i went 100% raw on 10/10/2005. no slip ups, no temptations. just the pleasure of knowing im feeding my body the best fuel it could ask for. the longer im raw, the more i enjoy appling the other facets which affect our nutrtion like sleep, sun, water, rest, sport, emotional poise, fresh whole ripe organic fruits and veg.

each day is like a new fruit. we never know how the day is gonna turn out, but we do know that when we only accept the best, thats very often what we get...like todays hazelnut praline chocolate persimmons from aqualino and rosa's garden. truly amazing fruit! they gave us the best persimmons ever and wouldnt even accept any money.  they thought we were crazy for eating the 'rotten' ones. we thought they were crazy for not eating them...it was just another crazy afternoon feast with some characters of the local community.

remember the best fruit is on the limb..everyone else is too scared to venture out there. join the ranks of those that know as we simplify our life the laws of the universe become less complex.

dont join an easy crowd...as you wont grow. go where the expectations and demands to perform are high. walk away from the 90% that dont and join the 10% that do!

WE EITHER MAKE OURSELVES MISERABLE OR WE MAKE OURSELVES STRONG!
THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT IS THE SAME!!!!!!!!!!

I havent read 811, what i know of raw ive learnt online through forums, various websites, online videos. The 10% of calories from fats just made sense to me without reading it, but in practice, hmm not working, but im starting to think that its maybe more to do with transitioning than anything than a need of fat.

Interestingly enough i put what i ate yesterday into that fitday website, to look at what i consumed on a day i know i didnt eat enough (was out, busy, so didnt consume as much as normal) and i still consumed 1200 calories mostly from fruit, most days i eat more than that so i dont think im falling too shy of the mark of what i need in fruit. Also, it was a day i consumed more overt fats than normal, and still only 24% of calories, so maybe im doing the diet just fine.

I really just need to be patient i guess, and i probs should get my hands on the 811 book, seems to have inspired so many.

Thank you for that post, Niqi, because it was perfectly in line with what I've been thinking lately about our patriarchal sociey that allows and even approves bombastic, idiotic words and actions from boys and men, and the girls must stay coy and adoring.  I've found that many men would rather be with a more mindless, adoring woman than one who has intelligence and can love herself as well as others in the true sense.  Our intelligence and intuition often makes them so uncomfortable and cognizant of their own deficiencies.  Um, if they are deficient, don't they understand that's when love comes in?

And all this talk about seemingly carmelized persimmons is making me wish it was Fall here, but naaaw, because Spring/Summer fruits give more variety and are just too good to wish away!  I am so looking forward to eating cherries after I'm done with my water fast.

Hey Harley

I've found if I eat just fruit and greens my fat is less than 10% but if I add avocado or tahini my fat goes way above 10%. How do you get your fat to 10%?

there is no raw tahini that is australian made that i know of. heated fats are carcinogenic at best... as for sourcing really raw australian non rancid seaseme...good luck! lol!

thats why i laugh when people say youll get fat deficiency on 811...as fruits and veg contain fat. there is no food i eat that doesnt contain fat. lettuce, banana, persimmon, celery etc all contain sufficient fattty acids when eaten in sufficient amounts. and as we eat less omega 6 we need less omega 3 cos the ratios are more what we would find in nature...

to give low fat raw vegan a fair crack, it makes life easier if we study the book and put it to practise.

talking to a customer yesterday and i told em that i ate 35 medium bananas for breakfast. customer said they would be diabetic with that much fruit. i said 'diabeties like all metabolic disease starts with a high fat diet...i said 'kenya eats more refined sugar than most other countries..yet diabetes is almost unheard of. cos kenyans in general eat 811 calorically. they also produce the worlds best distance runners..'

how many people i meet on the street wasting away there true potential on starvation diets. people not having enough brain glycogen to decode fact from fiction..

the mystics on the hill are the best business folk. creating problems where none really exist. why when people say 'oh i need more protein', that they would never go out and eat the next animal they saw laying on the ground or walking past?
whom has a feast on eggs in a chicken coup?

yet fruit dangling from the tree is labeled as 'cancer causing sugar to be eaten no more than 2 pieces a day...'..lol! its funny that the crew dissing fruit eating ALWAYS are selling supplements, medicine etc..

it really motivates me when i see so many sick, sad folk walking around totally confused what to do. but given its the internet age and all the answers are out there, that mother nature is SHOUTING at us every meal, that we have certain instincts etc, that there is no one else to blame but ourselves for not getting the info that works and putting it into practise..

we are responsible for our own individual health. yet we live in a society that is happy to hand over that responsibility and wealth in exchange for some false health..

... so are you saying that if a person just eats sweet fruits and soft greens their ratio will 80/10/10 automatically?

if we are looking for a destination to go to, its easier if we actually have a map in front of us so we can see what terrain, distances etc are involved. rather than have someone give us snippets of random information...ie STUDY THE BOOK! lol!  laugh

yes indeed i reccomended my friend to a SUPERVISED fast in costa rica. it involves complete bed rest for up to 3-5 weeks. NOTHING heals like a fast. of course one needs to do the correct things after the fast too. stress is another factor if you have UC.

I am interested in doing a supervised fast (with complete bed rest) but I don’t want to go to Costa Rica to do it. Actually I can’t go to Costa Rica, as I have an extremely extreme severe phobia of flying.

I have only found one place in Australia who offer supervised 15 day fasts but at $6,000 for a 10 day stay, it is rather on the expensive side.

If I really had to, I could borrow the money, but would prefer not to get into debt too heavily. Plus the stress of being in debt would be counter-productive to healing. I find my UC always flares up when I get stressed.

So do you know of anywhere else in Australia that do supervised fasts?
