i've started to notice people who have a really bad attitude towards vegetarians, vegans ect lately one might almost call it hate.i read a book about the 150 most healthy foods and meat was in there and the author was talking about how high protein diets don't lower calcium absorbtion and how "the vegans have it wrong" and saying things like "vegan propaganda". once at my work when somebody asked what i had for lunch they gave me this almost angry look when i told them. i also saw a van that had a sticker with a picture of a cow on it and it said: "less than one a week makes you weak".  has anyone else noticed some really bad reactions about their eating habits?

Oh yes all the time, I am a closet raw vegan or maybe better I simply don't talk about it UNLESS people ask "so what do you eat?/ how did you lose that weight? how come etc"

People think you are really weird and then they become a little angry that by living this way they need to defend their choices so I normally say "listen it works for me and makes me happy it's not a religion.."

That helps, sometimes...

I have never hated vegetarians / vegans; I just use to find them immensely odd, strange, pasty looking little creatures, who ate lentils and farted a lot.

So you can imagine my shock, at finding myself following a vegetarian / vegan lifestyle.

I get loads of negatively for it and read loads of negatively in the media about it …..BUT……it is my own fault, karma coming back to bit me on the bum!

Hehehe KittyK... my mental image of a lentil eating vegetarian will always be Neil from 'the Young Ones' !!!

I've noticed different reactions when giving different answers to the 'why' question.  People seem ready for a debate about animal rights.  If you answer 'health reasons', they seem to get defensive and feel as if you are comparing your 'superior health choices' to theirs.  I've had the best/most friendly reactions from people when I just put it across that I'm squeamish, and don't like the idea of meat rotting in my stomach.  Apparently being squeamish, they can see as my failure & not feel threatened by it.

Good social experiment to try out the different reasons and reactions though!

i have absolutely no desire to fit-in, justify or prove my lifestyle to any of the mindless drones - no matter what they eat. it's not about the meat or no-meat bit, it lies entirely in stupidity and ignorance. these two "qualities" seem to be on the rise from what i can see - or maybe that's what queensland was always like...?

i do know many amazing people who also happen to consume meat. therefore, the tossers indulging in vego hate mongering already had a few screws loose to begin with, it's not about the animal products.

all i can say is : ENJOY. take delight in causing mental malfunctions in idiots. just don't get sucked-in to the fight; laugh it off - it's more annoying that way.

My eldest son turned vegetarian last year and last week he got so much flak from his work collegues, he was angry when he came home because they kept telling him he should eat meat.  I told him to just ignore them, they must feel threatened by his good health.  I also told him to never get into a conversation about religion, politics and vegetarianism, lol.  Some people are very defensive about their meat eating.

People generally tend to be fearful of what is unfamiliar to them.

Acting from a place of fear, folk can sometimes use terms that are less than complimentary when they are speaking of  those very things that are causing their fear.

One must be compassionate when faced with somebody who is scared.

For one meat eater who is saying that "vegans have it wrong" and has a "bad attitude", there is one vegan or raw fooder who is equally as vocal, using terms such as SAD or worse.

I personally have not received bad reactions to my food choices, and I eat some of the weirdest concoctions at my desk!  If there is interest in what I am eating, then I will gladly engage in conversation, otherwise I am happy just to eat my lunch.

I respect any individual's right to tread their own path, and eat whatever they like.  I am similarly afforded the same respect with regard to my diet.

Respect and compassion, I find, go a long way when it comes to any differences - not just those of food choices.

Last year I asked a hypothetical question about being stranded on a desert island overrun with chickens and would you eat them to survive.

I asked it as a joke, not realising that people would take offense to it.

This sort of question would not personally offend me, so I was a little bit surprised that I got flack over it. However, now I am more into eating vegan, I now realise how annoying my question would have been.

I don’t really come up against downright hatred but I get lots of repetitive silly questions, which is a little bit annoying

(i.e.)

1) Where do you get your protein from?

2) Do vegetarians / vegans eat Animal Cracker biscuits?

3) Don’t you know plants have feelings?

4) Do you swallow semen?

Apologies if the sexual nature of the last question offends, I am just repeating what I have been asked in the past.

If anyone can give me some quick-witted, intelligent and sarcastic replies for 3 and 4, I would love to hear them.

good one lulu, that made me laugh, i agree talking about veganism ect is just like going into religion or politics.
next time somebody asks me about protein i'm just going to laugh at them i think. it's funny how meat eaters who don't think about what they put in their mouths or know much about it all of a sudden become "nutritionists" and ask questions about protein which is probably the only nutrient they know there is.

KittyK: LOL  I love the silly questions list.  So far I have only been asked where my protein comes from.  Too many times.  Tora:  Yep, last time I got asked I just laughed.... in a good natured way... because it honestly did seem silly to me by that point to get asked it every time :D

Quick witted responses hey.  Well.  I think that you should stick with answers just as ludicrous and obviously untrue as the questions themselves :D

3)  Well, my vego-sadism has to come out SOMEhow...
4)  Wait what?  You think my boyfriend has balls?

<ahem>  Inappropriateness is great.

Hehe! I like those answers Waterberry.

For the protein question.. I usually come back with "What's protein?"
If they can tell me what protein is and why we need it and how it works in the body, then I'll give them an answer worthy of the question.
If not, I just look at them and say " Hey, how about you learn about protein, and it's function and synthesis in the human body ...and when you've done that we can have a discussion about it"

3) I could just murder a carrot!

4) too many responses ..inappropriate to say here...

Why are people getting ticked off when other tell them off about their diet? Have they not learn to neutralise such an attack?

1. You can totally ignore them.
2. "Thank you for caring about my health, I loving the way I feel now!"
3. I want to be the first person in a western society since WWII to get protein deficiency.
4. My doctors say I got this rare condition, where I can only eat fruits and veggie, anything else is shortening my life!
5 Question them about the protein requirement of various health institutes

I usually take the opportunity to educate people, especially on the protein question, i just sprout some fact, like how protein is actually in all foods, including fruit, and that the bodies requirement is much less than what the media would have you believe.

If people get defensive, i just say the diet works for me, id rather eat like this and be healthy than eat like i was and be sick. They usually finish it themselves with oh i could never do it.  A simple well its not for everyone usually ends it.

As for the semen question??? hahhaha thats hilarious, i dont think i could contain the laughter on that one. I think id probs respond with only if the guys eaten pineapple recently, lol (and no didnt think long and hard on that one, hubby made the joke that i fed him pineapple so i must be offering, hahahhahhahaha).

Plants have feelings??? interesting, id take a comment like that as asking for a bite, trick is dont. Roll your eyes, walk away, the other person is being a child.

Hey  cool

Great post!!

I hear negative comments about veganism (let alone raw-veganism) all the time!! I’m a raw-vegan Personal Trainer and body builder, so my situation can get a little stressful at times. Usualy when other body builders say:
"Man you wont get as ripped and as awesomly big as me!!"... then proceed to walk off and inject roids!! haha  rofl

I’m happy being vegan and love the raw life so I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve. Most of the people I work with know I'm vegan, so they're ok with it.

However, I deal with the same old comments from clients and gym members day in, day out...
"where do you get protien from...?! Where do you get your iron from...?! Didn't you know you'll waste away...?!" ect ...
My reply is simply:
"Do I look like I’m about to die?!" (Just to paint a picture for you) -----
I'm 6'3, 100kgish, tattooed, goatee, shaved head.. Not your average hippie look I know, more like a tofu eating biker!!  afro

I know to choose my battles carefully... but if they ask with genuine interest, I do my best to inform them.

I know what works for me; this is how I want to live my life. At the end of the day, I don't beleive there is anything anyone could say that would make me change my mind. Period.

So at times it’s hard, and you can feel like an outcast, but that’s where I feel most comfortable. I know for now I'll swim against the current, I'll walk my own path.

The Vegan Wolf

theres 4 categories (lets categories people for ones!) of people you may encounter when you go Vegan RAW:

1. people that feel, know and understand that what your doing is right and healthy , they want to know more about , are interested to hear, listen - some will try.

2. people who feel, know and understand that what your doing is right and healthy , they DON"T want to know much more about, ARENT interested to hear, listen and try.

3. people who DONT feel, DONT know and DONT understand that what your doing is right and healthy , but they WANT to know more about, are interested to hear, listen - some will try.

4. people who DONT feel, DONT know and DONT understand that what your doing is right and healthy, they DON'T want to know more about, ARENT interested to hear, listen and try

personally i havent met many person attacking me for being vegeterian, vegan and raw... i exclude some close family relatives early in the begin LOL, and some 'friends' back then ... but that was all and nothing...
